Tracks of 9 Tornadoes During Fatal Storms in Virginia

At least four deaths were reported as the storms tore through the state this week, according to the National Weather Service.

At least nine tornadoes were recorded in Virginia as a massive, fatal storm system tore across much of the state Wednesday afternoon.

There have been four known fatalities due to the storm. Three people were thrown from a mobile home in Waverly, including a 2-year-old. The body of a fourth person was found hours after the storm passed through Appomattox and destroyed his home.

WAVERLY TORNADO DETAILS

The tornado in Waverly had max winds of up to 110 mph, a strong EF1, knocking down trees and destroying two mobile homes. Several homes and businesses were also damaged, according to the weather service. The storm began a few miles south-southwest of Waverly and ended about 5 miles north northeast of town.

TORNADO: MIDDLE PENINSULA TO NORTHERN NECK

A tornado travelled 28 miles from the middle peninsula to the Northern Neck. Most of the damage was rated EF1 and EF2, with peak intensity at EF3 in Essex County, where 3 modular homes were destroyed. The storm had an average width of 200 yards and a maximum width of more than 400 yards. It caused numerous injuries.

TORNADO: MECKLENBURG COUNTY

Hail as large as 3 inches was reported near Kerr Lake Dam, along with tornado damaged near Keats Point. One home was moved off its foundation and other damage was reported.

TORNADO: NEAR REMLIK IN MIDDLESEX COUNTY VIRGINIA

A tornado 4 miles in length and 150 yards in width impacted Middlesex County, with winds estimated at 100 mph. The storm destroyed a house, tore off the second story on a barn and tore off the roof of another barn.

TORNADO: LANCASTER COUNTY

Beginning at a boy scout camp in Middlesex County, the tornado intensified to an EF1, flattening a brick wall on a garage, ripping off the roof of a house and snapping several trees, including 2-foot diameter pine trees.

TORNADO: SOUTHEASTERN FLUVANNA COUNTY VIRGINIA

A tornado with wind speeds up to 85 mph was about 4.5 miles in length and eventually crossed James Madison Highway. Numerous large trees were uprooted and shingles, siding and gutters were pulled off of several houses, according to the weather service.

TORNADOES: APPOMATTOX and PATRICK COUNTIES

An EF1 in Ararat, Patrick County, was on the ground for less than 2 miles, and only for about 2 minutes. It primarily caused roof damage to several homes, and snapped or uprooted numerous trees.

The tornado that touched down in Appomattox County was on the ground for about 17 minutes and ran 17 miles with EF3 winds up to 165 mph in the Evergreen area before it dissipated in Buckingham County. The storm killed one man, damaged more than 100 homes.

WEAK SHORT-LIVED TORNADO: BERTIE COUNTY

A weak tornado travelled nearly 1-half mile, damaging several trees.
