STAFFORD COUNTY, VA — A man suffered a gunshot wound in north Stafford on Sunday night, police said on Monday. He is expected to make a recovery, according to the Stafford County Sheriff's Office.

At 11:57 p.m., the sheriff's office received a report of a shooting at the Lakewood Apartments. A member of the sheriff's office was already nearby and made it to the scene "in seconds," authorities said in a report on Monday.

The victim, a man in his 20s, suffered a gunshot wound to the head. The responding officer began life-saving measures, according to the report. Fire and rescue responded to the scene and took the victim to the hospital. He is expected to recover, police said.

A handgun was recovered at the scene. Witnesses said that the victim's gunshot wound was self-inflicted. Detectives are still investigating, but they do not believe there is any threat to the public.
