FREDERICKSBURG, VA — There is a referee shortage in the City of Fredericksburg and across the country. Last week, city officials voiced concern that a lack of referees and umpires could threaten the region's youth sports leagues.

The referee shortage is a national issue, city officials said in a news release. An article published by the National Federation of State High School Associations said that more than 50,000 officials and referees have quit since the 2018-2019 season. Virginia has seen a 50 percent decrease in the number of officials in that time period, according to the city's news release.

Todd Brown is the director of Fredericksburg Parks, Recreation and Events. "Consider getting involved in your local sports programs, as a proactive parent, as a volunteer coach, or as a paid sports officiate," Brown said in the news release. "They are all equally important as positive role models for a great youth sports experience."

In spring 2022, approximately two thirds of youth soccer matches in Fredericksburg lacked officials, the city said. City staff members worked with Commonwealth Cardinals FC, a semi-professional developmental team, and the James Monroe High School boys’ varsity soccer team to have older players officiate youth games.

Jillian Franklin, the superintendent of sports and fitness, noted that low pay and the behavior of players and families are among the key contributors for the referee shortage. "Together we can improve the culture of sports in our community," Franklin said. "With your help officiating, coaching and positive parenting, the City’s local recreation leagues can continue to make a difference in the lives of so many children."
