Tornado Warning Extended for Fredericksburg

Until 6 p.m. Wednesday. Take cover now. Move to a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building.

A Tornado Warning has been issued for much the Fredericksburg area and communities west of the city until 6 p.m.

Warnings mean that severe weather is imminent and is based on specific criteria and existing reports received by the NWS, according to Accuweather.

The criteria include hail that totals more than 1 inch in diameter and wind speeds of 55 mph.

The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Watch Wednesday for the metro DC region, from 3:20 p.m. to 11 p.m.

The main hazards are damaging winds and tornados late this afternoon through this evening, according to the weather service. A Gale Warning is also in effect for all waters late this afternoon through Thursday.

The Weather Channel reported Wednesday afternoon that two people were killed in Waverly, Va., south of Richmond, after a tornado touched down there:


At 4 p.m., NBC-4 Doug Kammerer said he expects the worst weather between 5-8 p.m. Wednesday in the DC metro area.
