Herndon College Students Earn Accolades From Their Schools

Patch highlights the academic achievements of college students from the Herndon area.

HERNDON, VA — To shine a light on the academic achievements of college students from the Herndon area, Patch shares information provided by the students' families and Merit News.

Maya Elassal of Herndon was one of more than 600 members of South Carolina Corps of Cadets during graduation ceremonies on May 7, in the McAlister Field House at The Citadel, in Charleston, South Carolina. Elassal earned a bachelor of science in biology.

Josecarlos Martinez Seminario of Herndon was named to the dean's list for the fall 2021 semester at Frostburg State University in Frostburg, Maryland. To be eligible for the dean's list, a student must complete a minimum of 12 credit hours and earn a cumulative semester grade point average of at least 3.4 on a 4.0 scale.

Molly Shapiro of Herndon earned dean's list honors for the spring 2022 semester at The University of Tampa in Florida. Shapiro was a sophomore majoring in Nursing BSN-PRE. Students must maintain a GPA of 3.75 or higher to be eligible for the dean's list.

The following people recently were initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines:

  • Catherine LeHanka of Oak Hill at James Madison University
  • Julie Brunson of Herndon at George Mason University
  • Megan Anderson of Herndon at Clarion University of Pennsylvania

Sean Herlihy of Herndon was among more than 3,700 students from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio who received degrees during the in-person spring commencement May 14-15, 2022. Herlihy graduated with a B.S. in engineering degree, majoring in mechanical engineering.

Maha Saidahmed of Herndon has been named to the spring 2022 dean's list at Emory & Henry College in Emory, Virginia. To be named to the dean's list, students must be a full-time student and receive a 3.6 GPA for the semester.

Noah Halterman-Mitchell of Herndon was among the 92 students who to receive student-athlete honors during the spring 2022 Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Halterman-Mitchell is a sophomore member of the men's track and field team and is studying political science.

Cassie White of Herndon, who is pursuing a BFA in acting at Baldwin Wallace University, is participating in a collaborative program between the school's nursing and theater and dance departments. Student actors portray patients in various medical scenarios to give nursing students a chance to practice nurse-patient communication techniques in a controlled learning environment.

Aaron Hutchens of Herndon was named to the dean's list for the spring 2022 semester at Ithaca College in Ithaca, New York.

The following students received degrees during the May 17-22 Spring Grad Walk 2022 at University of Maryland Global Campus in Adelphi, Maryland:

  • Ndolo Njie of Herndon, bachelor of science in computer networks and cybersecurity
  • Troy Scites of Herndon, bachelor of science magna cum laude in software development and security
  • Kristin Renee Lonsdale of Herndon, bachelor of science in investigative forensics
  • Khaliq Clark of Herndon, bachelor of science in computer networks and cybersecurity
  • Karina M. Deneva of Herndon, bachelor of science in biotechnology
  • Mavlide Samet of Herndon, master of science in management

Rochester Institute of Technology conferred more than 4,300 degrees at all of its campuses in the 2021-2022 academic year, including the following students:

  • PJ Smith of Herndon received a BS in computer science.
  • Rohan Patil of Herndon received a BS in computer engineering.

The following students were among the 291 student athletes at Shenandoah University to be named Academic All-ODAC by the Old Dominion Athletic Conference:

  • Elise Velasquez of Herndon
  • Madisen Kimble of Herndon
  • Brooke Wagner of Oak Hill

Student-athletes who posted at least a 3.25 GPA for the 2021-22 academic year were recognized for the honor.
