FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — Fairfax County Police launched a "Road Shark" enforcement campaign Monday to combat aggressive driving.

According to the police department, "Road Shark" is a high-visibility enforcement seeking to address aggressive driving, reduce crashes and change driver behaviors. The campaign dates back to 1999, which the police department said resulted in reduced speeding and reckless driving violations during the campaigns. A 2022 National Highway Traffic Safety Administration synthesis of studies concluded that high-visibility enforcement reduces crashes and improves safety in enforcement locations.

During the new campaign, police officers will be stationed in high-visibility areas around the county. Officers will look for traffic violations, including aggressive driving, excessive speeding, driving under the influence, school zone violations, distracted driving and more. State police, who typically patrol the interstates, will also be doing enforcement.

"With the significant increase in crashes in recent years, now is the time to roll out the Road Shark program once again," the police department said. "Educating aggressive and distracted drivers will be a key to the success of the initiative."
