DUNN LORING, VA — This week, Metro started a capital project to replace escalators at the Dunn Loring Metro station.

Metro is replacing two platform escalators with "brand-new ones that are more durable and reliable," according to the transit agency. Escalators will be replaced one at a time, which means one escalator will remain open as a two-way staircase while the other is worked on. The entrance and elevator from the mezzanine to the platform will remain open during the project.

It is expected to take about eight months for site preparation, demolition, construction, installation and testing of the escalators.

In 2021, Metro began an effort to replace 130 escalators across 32 stations by 2028. The transit agency's first escalator replacement initiative happened from 2011 to 2019, adding 145 new escalators.
