FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — As the Fairfax County Animal Shelter is preparing for summer maintenance, it needs help finding homes for adoptable dogs and other pets.

The animal shelter is hosting its The Heat is On summer adoption event with reduced adoption fees and free adoptions. From June 22 to 25, dog adoptions are free, while cats and small animals' adoption fees are 50 percent off.

With HVAC system maintenance scheduled, the need to clear pets, especially dogs, is urgent. The shelter is particularly full of dogs, as nearly 100 are there.

"We are running out of space, especially for dogs, and we need the community’s assistance in finding loving homes for these wonderful pets," said Reasa Currier, the Fairfax County Animal Shelter's director. "We have animals of all species, sizes, and shapes, from bearded dragons to puppies, and our staff is ready to assist in finding the pet that will be the perfect match for every family."

To help kick off the adoption initiative, the animal shelter and Fairfax County Police Department held a "Cops and Kittens" promotional event on Wednesday. A dozen adoptable kittens visited with the police department's staff to promote their availability for adoption.
