VIENNA, VA — A federal contractor has been charged in federal court in relation to stealing an FBI vehicle and trying to access a restricted FBI building in Vienna Tuesday.

John C. Worrell III, is accused of taking the vehicle from FBI Headquarters at 935 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C., according to federal prosecutors. Worrell had access to the FBI headquarters as an employee of a government contracting agency assigned to the FBI headquarters.

D.C. federal court documents say Worrell arrived at the FBI facility in Vienna around 2:02 p.m. Tuesday, showed the ID of the FBI agent the vehicle belonged to, and told a security guard he had a classified meeting. However, Worrell was unable to show FBI access cards that matched the FBI agent's identity. The security guard denied entry to Worrell and instructed him to park in a visitor lot. Worrell tried to get enter again but was denied entry.

When security personnel approached in the visitor lot, Worrell showed a Virginia driver's license and last four digits of his Social Security number, which confirmed he didn't match with the FBI agent's credentials.

The FBI agent whose vehicle was stolen parked the vehicle around 12:07 p.m. Tuesday and found it missing around 1:15 p.m. After searches of the parking facility, FBI surveillance cameras showed a vehicle looking like the agent's dark green Ford sedan exiting the 10th Street FBI HQ garage ramp around 12:26 p.m. Tuesday.

Vienna Police responded to the FBI facility around 3:02 p.m. Tuesday and found Worrell wearing the FBI agent's jacket and glasses. According to court documents, Worrell admitted to stealing the vehicle from the FBI garage, as the vehicle was unlocked with the keys left inside. An FBI agent said in court documents that keys are left in vehicles at FBI headquarters due to limited parking to allow authorized personnel to use them as needed.

Worrell confirmed he drove the vehicle from FBI headquarters to the FBI facility in Vienna. Court documents say Worrell described receiving coded messages indicating he was in danger and needed to get to a secure facility to be safe.

Worrell faces charges of interstate transportation of stolen property and theft of government property.
