UPDATE: The Virginia Department of Transportation has postponed the partial opening of the new Hunter Mill Road bridge. It will be rescheduled for a later date.

VIENNA, VA — Drivers should be aware of a traffic shift happening Wednesday on the Hunter Mill Road bridge over Colvin Run at the Vienna-Reston border.

Around 2 p.m. Wednesday, traffic will move to part of the new bridge over Colvin Run, according to the Department of Transportation. One lane of alternating traffic will be on the newly constructed part of the bridge. Alternating traffic will be controlled by temporary traffic signals between Crowell Road (Route 675) and Cobble Mill Road.

The change is part of the Hunter Mill Road over Colvin Run bridge project, which will replace the one-lane, weight-restricted bridge with a two-lane bridge separated by a median. The old bridge, built in 1974, has a 10-ton weight restriction and one lane. According to VDOT, this area of Hunter Mill Road sees an average 7,400 vehicles a day.

After the traffic shift, the existing bridge will be demolished, and the remainder of the new bridge will be built.

The project will also add an improved trail crossing south of the bridge, landscaping in the median over the bridge, and abutments for a new trail bridge over Colvin Run. Fairfax County will construct the trail bridge at a later time.

The bridge project is expected to be finished in spring 2023. The project costs $5.2 million and is funded by federal, state and Fairfax County funds.
