Overnight I-66 Lane Closures Planned In Vienna/Fairfax Area

VIENNA, VA — Overnight lane closures are planned on Interstate 66 in the Vienna/Fairfax area for bridge work Friday night into early Saturday.

According to the Virginia Department of Transportation, the lane closures are prompted by work on the new Gallows Road Bridge over I-66. Regular lanes will be reduced during overnight hours, and intermittent 20-minute stoppages in both directions can be expected between midnight and 4 a.m. In addition, the I-66 Express Lanes will be closed in both directions in the area.

Eastbound I-66 will be reduced to two lanes near Gallows Road from 11 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Saturday. Up to four traffic stoppages of 20 minutes can be expected between midnight and 4 a.m.

Westbound I-66 will have one lane closure near I-495 from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Up to four traffic stoppages of 20 minutes can be expected between midnight and 4 a.m.

The I-66 Express Lanes will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. in the eastbound direction from Route 123/Chain Bridge Road to I-495. Traffic will be directed to exit Express Lanes at Route 123, turn right at the traffic signal onto southbound Route 123, and stay right to access I-66 general lanes.

The westbound I-66 Express Lanes will also be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. between I-495 and Vaden Drive.

Drivers can also expect ramp closures and ramp lane closures from I-495 regular and Express Lanes. One lane of the northbound and southbound I-495 ramps to westbound I-66 will be closed from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Up to four 20-minute traffic stoppages are planned between midnight and 4 a.m.

In addition, ramps from the northbound and southbound I-495 Express Lanes to the westbound I-66 Express Lanes will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

This work is part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project, which added Express Lanes alongside regular lanes between I-495 and University Boulevard in Gainesville. The project also includes rebuilt bridges and interchanges to make room for the Express Lanes.

The Gallows Road bridge has been rebuilt over I-66 as part of the project. The new bridge provides bike lanes and wider sidewalks over the bridge and access to a new shared-use path being constructed along I-66.
