Puppy Nativity Event Returns To Vienna For Third Year

Puppies dressed as wise men, shepherds and angels? Count us in.

VIENNA, VA—It's not uncommon for Christian churches to set up a Nativity scene during the Christmas season. One Vienna church put a creative twist on the tradition: a Nativity scene with dogs. The Church of the Good Shepherd will hold its third annual Puppy Nativity on Saturday, Dec. 8 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Anyone is invited to bring their pets for photos at the Nativity scene.

Rev. Eric Song came up with the Puppy Nativity idea when he became pastor in 2016. "The original nativity had many animals around the manger, so bringing our pets is a wonderful way to celebrate the season!" said Song. "Animals are a big part of our families, and we want all to be included. So bring your pets to pose at our nativity."

Costumes, dog treats and photos will be provided. For the owners, there will be hot chocolate. The church's youth group will be collecting donations to provide struggling Fairfax County families with Christmas gift cards through Britepaths. Visitors can also check out the "Peace Like a River" mixed media exhibit in the church's gallery.

Need another reason to go? "These photos make great Christmas cards, too," Song said.
