VIENNA, VA — The first of two roundabouts at the Nutley Street and I-66 interchange is expected to open around the early morning hours of Monday, Oct. 31, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

The new roundabouts are part of the redesigned interchange connecting Nutley Street with I-66 for the Transform 66 Outside of the Beltway Project. The first roundabout south of I-66 will open on Oct. 31. A second roundabout on the north side of I-6 6will open later in 2022.

When the roundabout opens, the temporary traffic signal at Nutley Street and the ramp from eastbound I-66 will be removed. Traffic from eastbound I-66 going to northbound Nutley Street will use the roundabout and stay left to exit to northbound Nutley Street. Drivers continuing through Nutley Street in both directions will also use the roundabout and stay right.

Drivers from eastbound I-66 to southbound Nutley Street will not need to use the roundabout. There are also no changes in how drivers go from northbound Nutley Street to eastbound I-66 or southbound Nutley Street to I-66 in either direction.

From northbound Nutley Street to westbound I-66, drivers will enter the roundabout, stay to the right, continue north on Nutley Street over I-66 and stay right to exit to westbound I-66. A bypass lane will open at a later time to provide direct access without the roundabout.

To prepare for the new traffic pattern, the ramp from eastbound I-66 to northbound Nutley Street will be closed from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday. To follow a detour, stay to the right on I-66, exit at the Vienna Metrorail Station South/Saintsbury Drive ramp, turn right onto Vaden Drive, turn right onto Virginia Center Boulevard, and turn left onto northbound Nutley Street.

The redesigned interchange is part of the Transform 66 Outside of the Beltway Project, which is adding Express Lanes between the Capital Beltway and University Boulevard in Gainesville. The first segment of the Express Lanes opened in September between Route 28 in Centreville and University Boulevard in Gainesville. The remaining segment between Route 28 and the Capital Beltway is on schedule to open in December.
