VIENNA, VA — After Vienna Police announced a stop sign enforcement campaign at the start of June, hundreds of citations were issued in that month.

Police said the traffic safety campaign in the Town of Vienna included enforcement of all traffic laws with a focus on stop sign violations. The campaign resulted in 220 stop sign citations issued and 108 other traffic citations.

Stop sign violations were at similar levels in a June 2022 enforcement campaign. Throughout June 2022, officers found 219 stop sign violations and 74 other violations.

Vienna Police say residents contacted the police department about specific "problem intersections" for traffic violations. Police will continue to monitor these intersections and conduct selective enforcement campaigns in the coming months.

Police remind drivers to stop at stop signs as well as solid or flashing red lights before entering a crosswalk, intersection or stop line. Drivers cited for a stop sign or red light violation can be fined and three demerit points on their driving record. In certain cases, stop sign violations can be counted as reckless driving.
