FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — More of Leesburg Pike, or Route 7, is continuously three lanes in each direction between Tysons and Leesburg. The Virginia Department of Transportation said a project to widen a portion of Leesburg Pike from four to six through lanes in Fairfax County is complete.

The Route 7 Corridor Improvements project covered about seven miles of Route 7 between Reston Avenue in Reston and Dulles Toll Road in Tysons/Vienna. A two-mile portion of new lanes between Reston Avenue and Riva Ridge Drive opened to traffic in 2022, and the remaining five miles of lanes between Riva Ridge Drive and Jarrett Valley Drive are now open.

The opening is three months ahead of schedule, according to VDOT. The new lanes provide continuous six lanes for about 20 miles between Tysons and Leesburg.

Along with the new lanes, crews reconstructed the Lewinsville Road intersection with a displaced left-turn lane from eastbound Route 7 to Lewinsville Road.

The improvements include new shared-use paths for bicyclists and pedestrians on both sides of the seven miles of Route 7 between Reston Avenue and Jarrett Valley Drive. The shared-use path connects to the Fairfax County Parkway Trail to Tysons. The project also replaced the Difficult Run bridge for Gerry Connolly Cross County Trail users to cross Route 7 and built a new pedestrian underpass at Colvin Run Mill Park.

While the new roadway lanes are open, work zone speed limits of 45 mph are remaining through early May. Crews will be removing temporary work zone signs in the corridor. The speed limit will return to 55 mph between Reston Avenue and Wolftrap Run Road once crews are out of the area.
