VIENNA, VA — Monday was supposed to be the day when everyone returned to work or school following the New Year's holiday, but Mother Nature had a different plan for our region.

A winter storm warning was issued by the National Weather Service, with much of the area expecting 5 to 10 inches of snow on the ground. According to preliminary snowfall totals from the NWS, Vienna WNW had 7 inches recorded by a trained spotter at 1:33 p.m.

The storm forecast prompted Fairfax County Public Schools to cancel classes Monday. Federal offices in the Washington, D.C. area closed, along with Town of Vienna offices, Fairfax County government offices and many of its services.
