Neabsco Mills Road Widening Completed In Woodbridge Near High School, College

WOODBRIDGE, VA — A road widening project near a high school and Northern Virginia Community College campus in Woodbridge has been completed, according to Prince William County. County officials celebrated with a recent ribbon cutting.

The $34.3-million project widened Neabsco Mills Road from two lanes to four lanes between Smoke Court and Richmond Highway/Route 1. The divided roadway also includes a sidewalk and shared-use path on both sides. The project is in an area with a significant student presence, with Freedom High School and NOVA's Woodridge campus nearby.

"As our community continues to grow, projects like this one are crucial," said Board of County Supervisors Chair At-Large Deshundra Jefferson via a news release. "Neabsco Mills Road is a growing throughway that drivers depend on, and with NOVA's Woodbridge Campus and Freedom High School, we must do everything we can to alleviate traffic congestion and ensure that students can get to school safely and on time."

Neabsco District Supervisor Victor Angry, whose district the project is in along with the Woodbridge District, said the board's priority to improving infrastructure benefits county residents and meeting growing traffic demands.

"Recognizing the urgent need to address traffic congestion coming from the busy Route 1 and Dale Boulevard, we embarked on this project with a clear vision to create a more efficient and safer route for everyone who travels on this road," said Angry. "The widening of Neabsco Mills Road is not just about adding lanes. It is about laying the groundwork for the near-future growth of our community."

Woodbridge District Supervisor Margaret Angela Franklin added, "The 10-foot, shared-use path provides safe pedestrian travel for both Freedom High School and the Northern Virginia Community College students to use before and after classes. The widening of this road provides easy access to restaurants, hotels and residential areas."

According to the county, the project faced challenges with right-of-way acquisition and utility relocation. The project design started in June 2017, with construction starting in 2022. The Northern Virginia Transportation Authority, which allocates regional transportation revenues, provided $8.9 million for the project.
