About me

Hi, I’m Jonathan. I’m a pronunciation coach; I help students acquire the standard North American English accent. I help adult students who are intermediate or advanced speakers of English.

Students are usually surprised by the things they learn in my lessons, because what I teach is so much different than what they learned in school. If you take lessons from me for a while, you will no longer sound like your English teacher in school. You will no longer sound like other people from your country when you speak English. You will start to sound like a native speaker of English from America or Canada.

People speak with foreign accents because they are taught to use the sounds and sound patterns of their native languages when speaking English, instead of learning the sounds of English.

I use minimal pairs, like this pair, to help students hear, and pronounce, the sounds of English. These two words have two different vowel sounds. These are not one sound held different lengths, these are two different sounds. You can probably hear that these words sound different: Fill, feel. Fill, feel.

I have a book of pronunciation exercises that use pairs like that to help students hear and pronounce the sounds correctly.

I also use short poems to help students get a sense of the rhythm of English.

I use dialogue from movies to help students learn to speak expressively using intonation.

I also chat with students to coach students on pronunciation while talking, and to help students get in the habit of using good pronunciation.

For every hour of lessons with me, I recommend at least an hour of practicing on your own.

The rate of progress varies, but most students start to have obvious improvements in their accents after several months.

I am a native Russian speaker with an intermediate level of English. Improving my pronunciation is essential because I live in the USA, where clear communication with colleagues and clients is crucial. Jonathan is a perfect fit for me. After three lessons, I can confidently say I will continue taking classes with him, and here's why: 1) He has already taught me to distinguish clearly sounds like 'O' and 'AW,' ensuring that people understand whether I say 'row' or 'raw' and 'low' or 'law.' In addition to pronunciation, he focuses on helping me develop a good rhythm in English, which I also find valuable. 2) I appreciate his providing additional materials for our lessons, helping me learn faster. 3) I like his structured approach. He listens carefully to how I pronounce words during our lessons and notes high and low-priority sounds that we need to work on. 4) I like that he always corrects me if I say something incorrectly. He keeps me focused and never lets me relax, which shows that he genuinely cares about my progress. 5) We have homework, and he sends me recordings of words and sentences we've practiced during our lesson so I always know how to pronounce them correctly. Jonathan has helped me gain confidence in my pronunciation. He knows which aspects are tricky for non-native English speakers and even has his own lists of the most difficult common words. We have worked on improving my vowels and consonants and have done many exercises on rhythm. I can totally recommend Jonathan to anyone who wants to level up their American accent.
