Baldy Mountain Proposed Research Natural Area (pRNA) was selected to represent subalpine fir (Abies lasiocarpa) plant communities, western juniper (Juniperus grandis)/ mountain mahogany (Cercocarpus montanus) associations, and subalpine fir/Idaho fescue (Festuca idahoensis) grasslands. The pRNA includes the headwaters of West Fork Little Indian Creek and Little Indian Creek. There are several steep rock outcrops on the southwestern and eastern boundaries of the pRNA. Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii), ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa)and juniper (Juniperus spp.) plant associations make up almost half of the pRNA while  bunchgrass/grassland , subalpine fir, grand fir (Abies grandis), and lodgepole (Pinus contorta) plant associations make up the other half.
