Starbucks has sparked controversy with the launch of its new cold cup, which customers have compared to 'UFOs' - as the coffee giant introduces the new addition at various locations.

Coffee addicts are threatening to switch over to competitors after one customer showed off the new cup she got while buying her daily cup of Joe at Starbucks.

A spokesperson for the chain confirmed to DailyMail.com that it was debuting its new 'compostable cold cups' across 24 locations due to 'local mandates.'

They noted that Starbucks was working to 'further environmental goals' by offering visitors the new cup with a domed lid and a paper straw.

And while the change may benefit the environment, it left customers heartbroken as they claimed it was 'enough to make [them] go to Dunkin'.'

'Based on local mandates, customers at 24 stores will be served their favorite Starbucks beverage in fiber-based compostable cold cups,' the spokesperson said.

'The new compostable cups and lids are opaque and made from double-walled, fiber-based paper board with a bioplastic liner, and the lids are made from compostable molded fiber, too.

'To help further our environmental goals, Starbucks is working to reduce waste to landfill by 50 per cent and ensure all customer-facing packaging to be recyclable, reusable, or compostable by 2030.'

Some were tipped off to the new change by a viral video, which has so far amassed more than 2.2 million views, where California-based content creator Bay ranted about the new cups as she claimed she couldn't handle the drastic change.

Bay said in the video: 'Public service announcement: These are the new cold cups at Starbucks.

'Anytime you get a cold beverage, you're getting this cup. I was so flabbergasted. I walked up there like, "What is this?"'

The coffee lover then branded the cup a 'UFO,' while also comparing it to a 'spaceship.'

'No more plastic, no more trying to guess which your drink is. I don't know why they switched the cups, it's probably because it's environmentally friendly, but I'm not good with change y'all,' she added.

In a follow-up clip, the content creator went to a different Starbucks location to see if the change was put into full swing yet.

She went through the drive-thru and was overjoyed to see that her drink had come in a plastic cup.

'I think that the store near my house is a test store and they are testing out the paper cups with the dome lids for cold drinks,' she said.

Other customers also took to the video-sharing platform to share their thoughts on the new cups.

'I like it,' one woman, who posts under prettycasualcoco, gushed as she spoke about the cup while in her car.

Another user named Gracie, who is based in San Diego, added: 'I feel half the fun is being able to see what color drink you have, especially all the fun summer drinks, I feel like that's part of the fun.'
