MSNBC did not air Morning Joe – its signature morning politics show – on Monday, instead airing breaking news coverage of the attempted assassination of Donald Trump.

The decision was made in part to avoid a potentially embarrassing moment for the network.

There were worries one of the guests on the program's roundtable might make an inappropriate comment on live television that could be used to attack the network and the program, CNN reported.

The network is known for having guests that tilt toward progressive and Democratic politics. And executives were said to want avoid any guest appearing insensitive to the former president.

Some of Trump's supporters have blamed the 'liberal media' for the attempt on the former president's life.

Cesar Conde, the chairman of NBCUniversal News Group, appears to have been behind the decision to yank the show.

The hosts Joe Scarborough and Mike Brzezinski are vehement Trump critics and have often clashed with the former president.

They are also supporters of President Joe Biden's candidacy and had him on their program when he was trying to recover from his disastrous debate performance with Trump.

Additionally, Trump supporters have attacked the network for some of its commentators' remarks on the former president.

NBC, like the other news networks, went straight into breaking news mode after shots were fired at Trump's rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on Saturday night.

'Given the gravity and complexity of this unfolding story, NBC News, NBC News NOW and MSNBC have remained in rolling breaking news coverage since Saturday evening,' a spokesperson for NBCUniversal News Group said.

Morning Joe is expected to resume airing on Tuesday.

But it was odd the network's main politics program didn't air the first day of the Republican National Convention.

Conservatives saw the move as proof of their charge the show has a liberal bent.

'A rare moment of self awareness from the lead echelon of the Left's violent rhetoric brigade at MSNBC They knew the clowns at Morning Joe & their guests couldn't avoid hating on Trump,' wrote conservative writer Jim Hanson on X.
