Man dies after shootout and five-hour standoff with SWAT officers near Ohio State University

A man engaged in a five-hour standoff with police and a SWAT team in Ohio has died, authorities confirmed. 

It remains unclear how the man, who was said to be in his 20s, died after he reportedly fired shots at officers in Columbus near Ohio State University.

ABC6 reported that investigators said it started after someone called 911 to report a burglary was in progress in the area. 

Officers arrived on the scene and were fired upon although nobody was said to have been struck. Officers returned fire but it is not clear if the suspect was shot.

Images captured at the scene show a large police presence, with ABC 6 reporting that 16 cop cars arrived at the scene. 

According to police scanners, multiple apartment buildings had to be evacuated as the situation unfolded. 

When officers arrived, they saw the suspect re-load his gun before barricading himself somewhere in the area.

A dispatcher said that the suspect and police exchanged gunfire on two occasions but nobody has been injured.
