Man blasted for being 'arrogant' after he slams painter and decorator because he asked to be paid immediately after painting house

  • Mike Higgins encountered a backlash online after saying he did not pay up front

A man has been blasted for 'arrogant' behaviour after slamming a painter who asked to be paid immediately after finishing a job.

Property and real estate businessman Mike Higgins encountered a backlash on X, formerly Twitter, and was accused of 'bad money management' after sharing a post to his 18,000 followers.

Sharing a picture of his recently painted hom, he wrote: 'Painter finishes job at 7:38pm on a Friday night. Immediately wants payment (cheque).

'What’s your move? Seems like every single time, they need a check immediately after the job is done. Is it bad money management?'

In response, other users were quick to point out that he was 'arrogant' to expect the contractor to have to wait an entire weekend for payment.

Followers said he should have been prepared to pay the individual straight away if he was already having work done to his house.

One wrote: 'You should have already had the check in an envelope.

'The check should have already been waiting and you simply tell him where it is.'

Another said: 'If they are working for you on a Friday night, then you can write a check on a Friday night. Payment terms are also something that should be discussed upfront.'

One shared: 'Don’t be a cheapskate. If the work is all done, pay the guy.'

Another posted: 'As a plumbing contractor the longer I wait for payment the harder it is to get it. I try to get paid as soon as job is completed. Investors are notoriously hard to get ahold of after job is completed'.

Mr Higgins then sought to clarify the situation with a follow-up post, in which he claimed that the decorator did not object to being paid at a later date.

He wrote: 'Before you blow a gasket, we are meeting up Monday morning.

'I have no intentions of NOT paying. Just always find it funny that I get a text “can I get a check” literally out of no where.

'Had no clue the job would be done tonight and didn’t think it was unreasonable to wait till the morning or Monday'.

However, this did little to quell others' anger, as they accused him of 'bad money management' for failing to pay the painter once the job was done.

More scathing responses to Mr Higgins' tirade read: 'By “literally out of nowhere” you mean “when they finished the job I agreed to pay them for” ? Why can’t you give him a check on Friday, bad money management?'.

'"Literally out of nowhere". Did you not know you had work being done?'.

'He did what you agreed to, so now the only weird thing is you not immediately paying him'.

'Do you pay for your meal immediately after enjoying it, or are you allowed to walk out and come back Monday with a check?'
