Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth weather: More rain on the way - what you need to know

The fine weather for Australia on Friday could be brief with more rain set to soak the country over the weekend.

Rain is forecast for the country's southern coast stretching from the Queensland border all the way across to Perth, though it will likely not be as intense as earlier this week.

'Temperatures are set to drop on Friday in Adelaide and Saturday in Melbourne and a low pressure system could bring rain in SA that will spread into Victoria, NSW and the ACT on Friday and Saturday,' Weatherzone's Ashleigh Madden said.

Weatherzone said widespread falls of 20 to 40mm are forecast in the next three days across southeastern SA, parts of Victoria and NSW, while western Tasmania could see 40 to 60mm.

'In NSW on Friday there is potential for a squall line to form which could generate damaging winds across parts of the state,' Ms Madden said.

'Perth, could see dangerous thunderstorms from late Friday into Saturday with possible damaging winds and heavy rain.

'The wind, storms and rain should clear later on the weekend, before another strong cold front approaches Australia's southeast mid next week.'

The Bureau of Meteorology said flooding remains a concern near the Queensland and NSW border after particularly heavy rainfall this week.

'We've got flood warnings in place for the Southern Capricornica and Wide Bay-Burnett districts in Queensland and the Northern Rivers and the Mid-North Coast of NSW,' meteorologists Miriam Bradbury said.

Rain could likely return over the weekend for south-east Australia but lighter than earlier this week, as this three day accumulated rainfall map shows
