Top engineer and father-of-two Greg Saenger who worked on major government building projects in NSW found dead at South Ballina beach

The body of a respected engineer and father of two young children has been found dead at a popular beach after he was reported missing days earlier.

Byron Bay man Greg Saenger, 45, was last seen on River Street in Ballina, in NSW's Northern Rivers region, at about 7.30pm on Monday.

Four days later, police were called to South Ballina Beach after a body was discovered in the water at about 6.30pm on Friday.

While the body is yet to be formally identified, it is believed to be that of Mr Saenger, the Daily Telegraph reports.

The father-of-two is considered one of the best geotechnical engineers in NSW and is the director and principal engineer at his company Civil Construct.

Civil Construct was contracted by the Lismore City Council to deliver seven civil engineering construction projects following the devastating floods in 2017.

Mr Saenger, who has worked in the industry for over 20 years, was a senior representative for the Pacific Highway's Tintenbar to Ewingsdale upgrade in northern NSW.

His company was contracted to build a new bridge over the Clarence River at Harwood as part of the major Woolgoolga to Ballina project (W2B).

In his profile on the Civil Construct website, Mr Saenger's favourite thing about engineering is said to be working on large infrastructure projects.

'He has a passion for the temporary works space, where design can happen on the spot. Above all, he gets great satisfaction from helping out his clients with innovative engineering solutions,' his profile reads.

'When Greg's not working, you'll find him out in the surf, swimming in the ocean or teaching his kids to surf and skate.'

Mr Saenger's death comes just a few years after his father Peter Saenger - a professor of coastal management in Lismore - died in 2021.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
