The crash unfolded at approximately 10:43pm on Thursday evening, with one of the trains reportedly belonging to Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF).

Officials said fuel began leaking into the nearby creek as they urged locals to avoid the area, but said the leaks are not expected to cause severe damage.

Power outages were also triggered in the surrounding area, affecting 92 households, which lasted several hours into Friday morning.

The Boulder Police Department said the crash site will be closed 'for the next few days', and announced that BNSF has taken over the response.

BNSF director of communications Kendall Sloan told Newsweek that crews are on the scene clearing the area, and said there is 'no threat to the public.'

'Two crew members were taken to the hospital with injuries and have since been released,' Sloan said.

'A small amount of fuel spilled from the locomotive but is not impacting the creek. Crews are on site working to clear the incident as quickly and safely as possible.'

Police said crews will be on the scene for several days clearing up the wreckage

The extent of the property destruction appears to have been contained to the trains and surrounding trees, and the crash did not cause any significant property damage to the area.

Reports indicate that the potential for fuel to leak into a nearby creek was largely avoided thanks to fuel being absorbed by spilled sand from one of the cars.
