Samsung users FUME over 'ridiculous' prices for new flip phones with Z Fold6 starting at $1900

Prices for Samsung's latest mobile devices, the Galaxy Z Flip6 and larger Z Fold6 are already generating outrage after being announced via a livestream Wednesday.

Despite the both phones' hardware specs remaining largely unchanged — the Fold6, for example, retains its 50-megapixel main rear camera — starting models for the Galaxy Z Fold6 comes with a $1,899 price tag and the Z Flip6 comes to $1,099.

'They killed my hype with this offer,' griped one Reddit user, who said they currently own a Z Fold5, discussing Samsung's 'Galaxy Unpacked' live event.

'As a Fold 4 owner,' another more brash user chimed in, 'get f***ed Samsung.'

That user, who goes by kasakka1 on Reddit, expressed frustration not only with the price hike but with Samsung's new and lower trade-in values on old Galaxy phones.

'I'm not paying 1800 Euro [approximately $1950 USD] for basically the same phone,' kasakka1 added, 'except one that is not likely to break long term.'

For Samsung consumers in the European Union, the new Galaxy phones' prices were even higher: the Z Fold6 cost was set at 2099 Euro ($2272), for example.

But the trade-in values on older models topped out at a paltry 359 Euro ($389) for the Z Fold4 and 639 Euro ($682) for the Z Fold5.

'I really hope people skip this one to teach Sammy a lesson,' one Redditter declared.

'All you get is a tweaked design and AI features that will be on [Z Flip5 and Z Fold5] in a few months.'

The Z Fold6's has also gained a few millimeters of extra width on its outer screen, making it a 6.3-inch display, compared to the Fold5's 6.2-inch display, with a 2376x968 resolution and 120Hz refresh rate.

The phone now weighs less too, down to 239 grams (a little over half a pound) compared to the Z Fold5's weight of 253 grams.

'I would say iPhones are much better in that price range,' Pandey opined.

'$1900 is the starting price for the new #zfold6 #samsung,' another user, Cleatus, declared, 'This is flipping rediculous [sic].'

Nevertheless, some aspects of the new Galaxy phones did offer confirmed hardware improvements — particularly on the smaller Z Flip6.

The Flip6 will come equipped with a much bigger and longer lasting batter, at 4,000mAh, as well as a new 'vapor cooling chamber' to keep the handheld device from overheating.

The Flip6 will also be upgraded to the same 50-megapixel main camera sensor as its bigger cousin the Fold6, and its starter version will even come with the new ultrawide camera, same as the Fold6.

There’s 12GB of RAM in the base model instead of 8GB, and the Z Flip 6 starts at 512GB rather than 256GB, which, if you’re going to raise prices, kind of seems like the least you can do.

'Samsung is driven by a relentless focus on innovation,' James Kitto, Samsung UK and Ireland's head of mobile, said.

'It's embedded in our DNA,' according to Kitto, 'and this launch is a testament to that, bringing to our customers the next generation of foldables: our slimmest, lightest and most durable yet.'
