And just like that, the round of 16 is over...

Euro 2024 has been sensational, so far, and now we are onto the last eight, so surely it is going to get better.

Turkey ended this first round of the knockout stages in style by knocking out dark horse Austria in Leipzig.

Merih Demiral was clinical from corners, and then at the back he and his fellow defenders stayed strong to limit the Austrians to a solitary goal.

They will now meet the Netherlands who shipped three past Romania earlier tonight, it was the best they have looked all tournament.

Now we have two days off before the action gets underway again. So, rest up, relax your eyes, and get ready for another cracking round of footie.

It's time to say goodnight for now, but I will see you all in the quarter-finals.

Well then, next up for Turkey is a match-up with the Netherlands.

It's certainly a winnable one, the Netherlands were brilliant today but were beaten by Austria in the group stage.

If the Turks turn up as they did tonight, I foresee them causing Ronald Koeman's men a lot of problems.

The match is on Saturday night, so we don't have to wait too long for it.

So it is Turkey and their carnival who will face the Netherlands on Saturday. They have brought fine football and poor football to this tournament but this energy, this monumental fusion of fans and players, is some force to be reckoned with.

Arda Guler really is a special talent, isn't he?

The 19-year-old showed once again why Real Madrid brought him to Spain last summer. He was class personified today.

His corner for Merih Demiral's second was stunning, he put it on a plate for the defender.

With the assist, he became the third teenager to both score and assist in the same European Championship.

Behind who, you ask?

Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo, who achieved the feat at Euro 2004.

While Glastonbury may be over, we now have our quarter-final line-up for Euro 2024.

There will be no Coldplay, and Dua Lipa's Albania will not be partaking, but let's have a look at who is:

I think Turkey deserve to go through. They were the better team on the day. There was no chaos for Turkey today. That early goal set up the game in a different way than we expected to go. They were the better team today.

Ok, I didn't realise how many shots Austria actually had...

Boy, they pelted them at Turkey, I mean, really did pelt them. 21 in total, but only five on target.

That's compared to Turkey's six in total.

The only statistic that matters though is the scoreline, and that one is in Turkey's favour.

Austria should have been more clinical.

This defeat is going to hurt for a very long time.

After topping the group, Austria were many people's dark horses to go far in this tournament.

They had been so brilliant in the group stage, playing pulsating football and wowing fans everywhere.

It just didn't click when they needed it to tonight.

After the full-time whistle went they looked devastated, as you'd expect. Some players were in tears, others dropped to the floor.

They are hurting.

I still can't believe he pulled off this save.

It's almost like time stood still as Christoph Baumgartner connected with that header, it seemed destined for the back of the net.

I will never understand how Mert Gunok reacted so quickly to turn the ball past the post, and right at the death too.

A monumental save.

This is a historic moment and they have got their goalkeeper to thank for it. He is crowded in the goal in front of the Turkey fans because Berlin is calling for the first time in 16 years, they are going to a major tournament quarter-final. They will play the Netherlands in the German capital.

The Turkey celebrations are still going on in Leipzig.

Their fans, players, and staff are all going wild. This night will live long in their memory.

They had to dig so, so deep in that second half, but they hung on, and you can't say it wasn't deserved.

Clinical from corners, while also being solid at the back. They were brilliant today.

Fully deserved for Turkey. The wingers came in and they didn't know what to do with them. Full of energy and their goalkeeper has been an absolute rock at the back. Gunok has produced an absolute worldie to send his country into the quarter-finals of the Euros.

Every single Turkey player and staff player races over to Mert Gunok ads the whistle is blown for full-time.

They have him to thank that they have won this match, that save right at 6the death ensures they are in the last eight.

Their 16-year wait is over!

He somehow produces an incredible save to deny Christoph Baumgartner.

I was sure that the Austrian's header was in, but Gunok pulls out one of the best saves I have seen in a very long time.

That was the chance!

Patrick Pentz keeps Austria in it!

Baris Yilmaz is through, he looks set to fire in a third, but Pentz gets low to his left to deny him.

They aren't dead yet, Austria.

Turkey are defending for their lives in Leipzig.

Okay Yokuslu hooks away the ball just as it is dropping for Stefan Posch to finish.

That may just have won the game for Turkey.

Austria have just four minutes of stoppage time to save their Euro 2024 campaign.

Can they find a late leveller?

Baris Yilmaz comes agonisingly close to sealing the deal for Turkey.

He is sent through and released a ferocious strike that whistles just over the bar.

It may not have counted, though, as the flag goes up. It was tight.

Christoph Baumgartner is everywhere at the moment, he is trying everything he can to find a leveller.

This time he gets on the end of a cross, but leaning back his header flies over the bar.

Time is running out.

After heroics at one end, he does his job at the other to head the ball away from a lurking Christoph Baumgartner.

Turkey are hanging on here...

Orkan Kocku has been struggling with cramp for the last few minutes and he cannot continue.

Irfan Can Kahveci has been called upon to fill in for the final few minutes.

And they are massive minutes...

A massive moment goes astray for Austria and Christoph Baumgartner.

Marcel Sabitzer sends in a lovely cross that goes all the way through to the winger, but it bounces heavily off his chest and the ball runs away from him.

A better touch, and maybe they would be level.

While the substitutions were being made, Marcel Sabitzer was pelted with cups by the Turkey fans.

One of them caught his head and it obviously hurt the midfielder.

Turkey players went over to plead with their fans to stop. I really don't get why they do it.

Sensing they need to stop the assault from Austria, Turkey are making some changes.

Kerem Akturkoglu and Okay Yokuslu enter the fray and replace Arda Guker and Kenan Yildiz.

Turkey have barely touched the ball since Austria halved the deficit.

It feels like they are inviting them on to try and find an equaliser, it's odd.

Florian Grillitsch accepts the invite and goes for goal from outside the box, but it does no harm.

We know Austria love scoring goals, and now they have one I feel a few more could follow.

The goals in this match are definitely not done, well, I don't think they are.

Hello, hello... here we go!

Austria take just eight minutes to pull one back and it comes from the boot of substitute Michael Gregoritsch.

He gets on the end of Stefan Posch's flick-on from a corner and smashes the ball into the roof of the net.

Game on!

Ralf Rangnick has decided to respond with more changes.

Max Wober and Florian Grillitsch have joined the action, replacing Philipp Lienhart and Konrad Laimer.

Can they make a difference?

The stadium is absolutely bouncing right now, the Turkey fans are having the time of their lives.

They are just under 30 minutes from seeing their team achieve something they haven't in 16 years.

Arda Guler was being pelted with cups from the Austrian fans before the corner was taken.

As soon as the goal goes in he turns to them and cups his ears.

That will teach em', right Arda?

Merih Demiral does it again!

It's almost de ja vu as Arda Guler whips in a delightful corner and Demrial fires in from it.

This time he uses his head, rising above everybody else to guide the ball home from inside the six-yard box.

Could that be the goal to send Turkey through?

Now it's time for Turkey to make a change.

Ismail Yuksek is already on a yellow, so he is now being hooked.

His replacement? Salih Ozcan. Another player just one card away from suspension...

Marko Arnautovic misses a massive chance, but luckily for him, the flag is up.

He was clean through and tries to dink it over Mert Gunok, but got it all wrong.

Maybe he knew he was already off... I hope he did for his sake.

It's all Austria now really, they have ramped it up a level.

Konrad Laimer does brilliantly, waltzes past several defenders and into the box before sliding the ball wide.

It would have been some goal had it gone in.

The yellow card is back out of the referee's pocket.

This time it's shown to Philipp Lienhart as he clatters Arda Guler. Fully deserved booking.

That is a massive save from Mert Gunok to keep Turkey in front.

Mark Arnautovic is sent through and you just think he is about to draw Austria level.

But Gunok is out like a flash to smother the attacker and beat the ball away.

Michael Gregoritsch is involved yet again.

The ball is lofted into him by Stefan Posch on the right, and he does well to get his head to it leaning back.

But it's a tough chance, and his effort bobbles wide of the post.

It's taken less than 90 seconds for Michael Gregoritsch to have an impact.

He races on the end of a Christoph Baumgartner cross, but his strike goes wide of the post.

In truth, he should do better, but the whistle is blown for a goal kick anyway as the ball was out before the cross.

Unsurprisingly, Ralf Rangnick has decided to make some changes for the second half.

Michael Gregoritsch and Alexander Prass have been called upon to make change, replacing Romano Schmid, and Phillipp Mwene.

And now the ball is rolling once again.

I told you that you don't get many faster starts than Turkey had today.

In fact, there has been none faster in European Knockout stage history. Merih Demiral's goal is the fastest.

It's also the second-fastest goal in tournament history after Nedim Bajrami's strike against Italy for Albania in the group stage.

I had barely had a chance to settle down before Merih Demiral stuck Turkey in front.

Just listen to the roar from the Turkey fans as the ball hits the net though. Incredible.

What a first half. A wild, raw, febrile night of tournament football as it should be - teams playing as if their lives depended upon it and many, many people, painting the stadium red, frantically jumping up and down.

Austria have come here with their pressing method but the Turkish energy has prevented them from employing it. In turn, the Turks have exploited the big spaces Austria leave space behind with their high defensive line. I feel there are more goals in this but the first 45 minutes have been a huge statement by Turkey.

Austria come close just before the whistle blows with Christoph Baumgartner prodding wide.

Just seconds later, the referee calls for the break.

Turkey walk down the tunnel with smiles on their faces as they lead at the interval thanks to Merih Demiral's strike inside 60 seconds.

The first 15 to 20 minutes really were electrifying from both sides, but the pace started to slow as the break approached.

This one has a lot more to come.

There is just one minute of stoppage time for Austria to find a goal before half time.

Is that enough time?

The game is starting to lose its flow now due to all the fouls.

This time it's Phillipp Mwene who makes a poor tackle, taking out Baris Yilmaz.

Somehow he doesn't receive a yellow card. Going by the rest of the match so far, I thought he would.

Yellow cards galore in Leipzig.

Ismail Yuksek is the next Turkey player to go into the referee's book. He halted Christoph Baumgartner as he tried to break away.

It means he would miss the last eight if Turkey make it there.

Now a booking for Austria.

It goes to Romano Schmid for a poor challenge on Ferdi Kadioglu. No complaints there.

A little frustration, perhaps?

Turkey are just not letting Austria have this match their own way.

Their physicality in the box is meaning the Austrians can't get any clean strikes away.

Merih Demiral puts off Marko Arnautovic this time before the ball is hooked clear.

Marcel Sabitzer is known for some special strikes, but that is not one of them.

He picks up the ball from 30 yards and has a crack, but his strike takes about three deflections before being cleared.

Hard to believe that Austria beat Turkey 6-1 in Vienna in March. They leave so much space for the Turks to attack into when they turn over possession. Baris Alper Yilmaz could have delivered another deadly blow there.

After a good reaction to going behind, Austria have handed the initiative back to Turkey.

If they aren't careful, another goal could be coming very soon. Arda Guler is pulling the strings.

Turkey look threatening every time they cross the halfway line.

Baris Yilmaz beats a couple of Austrian defenders in style and breaks away down the right.

He spots Kenan Yildiz in acres of space at the back post and tries to clip the ball over to him.

But he gets it all wrong and the ball falls behind the left winger.

Turkey, and Merih Demrial, are causing Austria so many problems from corners.

Arda Gulker curls in a lovely set-piece for Demiral to meet, and he rises to meet it well.

But he can't direct the ball on target, when really he should do better.

I know you are good, Arda Guler, but come on...

The teen sensation spots Patrick Pentz off his line so decides to try and lob him from just inside the Austria half.

Of course, it goes nowhere near the goal.

I think the match is finally back at normal speed.

The first 15 minutes felt like it was at the 2.0x speed you can get on YouTube. I just couldn't keep up.

Now, though, Austria are starting to be patient with the ball. There is still plenty of time left in this.

I must confess to wanting Austria to win – if only because they’re my dark horses. And they’ve responded to going behind like a bolt of electricity. They’ve gone close off successive corners.

Orkun Kokcu hacks down the lightning Christoph Baumgartner, who has been superb in these opening 11 minutes.

I am just about getting mine back in order after a pulsating start in Leipzig.

Despite going behind early, Austria have responded very, very well. i sense an equaliser soon.

My head is all over the place watching this, it's hard to keep up.

I'm not quite sure how Austria haven't just equalised...

A corner is sent in and misses nearly everyone. Christoph Baumgartner tries to turn it home from two yards out but gets smashed by a Turkey defender. No foul.

Austria are supposed to be the fast starters. They have scored during the first 10 minutes in six of their past seven games. But Turkey were ready for them. They hit right back on the first Austrian attack. Comical pinball Austrian defending from the ensuing corner and Merih Demiral slaps the ball in.

I can't quite believe what I am seeing here, this is sensational stuff.

TURKEY TAKE THE LEAD INSIDE 60 SECONDS!

Austria are normally the fast starters, but they have conceded after just 57 seconds in Leipzig.

Merih Demiral sends the Turkey faithful wild, prodding home from a corner after Austria fail to clear.

What a start!

You can barely hear yourself think due to this atmosphere.

There are chants, and there are also jeers. It is extremely loud in there.

The whole crowd roars as Austria get proceedings underway!

The national anthems are over, the talking is now over, kick-off is nearly underway.

There is a vibrant atmosphere in Leipzig with both sides desperate for a win.

Austria haven't won a knockout tie since 1954, while Turkey are looking to get to the quarter-final for the first time since 2008.

It's set to be a cracker, and we are nearly at the start line.

I’ve been to a lot of the Euros 2024 venues but, Berlin’s Olympiastadion side, I think this is the most beautiful and atmospheric. A new purpose-built stadium created within the outer shell of the distinctive old Communist exterior.

The old building’s narrow corridors and 1970s décor form part of the media facility here.  Hope you agree that there’s a real beauty in the old east German facade.

Well, I say man, Arda Guler is more like a child still, he is still only 19 years of age.

But with Hakan Calhanoglu suspended, Guler will be the one expected to drive Turkey into the last eight.

Can he deliver on the big stage?

I've been so impressed with Ralf Rangnick and his team. Even the other night, when they were drawing, they were still pressing on the front foot and showing great energy in the last 10, 15 minutes and going for the win. It'll be a brilliant atmosphere. I'll go for Austria.

A huge sense among the Austrians here that a win tonight might be their destiny – Leipzig is the spiritual home to coach Ralf Rangnick, who had two spells at the helm here, in the 2015/16 season and in 2018/19 before taking the sporting director’s role at Salzburg. Much of the success and growth of the club side who play here is down to him.

The Turks have the greater amplification, though – drowning out the noise of the stadium announcer who reads out the Austrian team. That noise has been a driving force for the Turks. But critically, they are without their creative maestro Hakan Calhanoglu. The Inter Milan central midfielder is suspended, having picked up two yellows.

England are no longer favourites to win Euro 2024, according to Opta's latest supercomputer prediction.

Gareth Southgate's men had been tipped to lift the trophy in Berlin on July 14 but have struggled thus far.

So, who does Opta think will win it now?

Here's the team news from both sides. The winner will face the Netherlands, who have outclassed Romania 3-0 in today's other last-16 tie.

Turkish supporters are everywhere in Leipzig. They look in the mood tonight... but can their team deliver on the pitch?

Austria were among the standout performers in the first phase of the tournament, topping Group D ahead of France and the Netherlands.

Turkey, meanwhile, won a thriller with Georgia and beat Czech Republic in an ill-tempered affair after being soundly beaten by Portugal in their opening game.
