World Cup winner and Premier League legend 'is in the running' for USMNT head coach job as search for Gregg Berhalter's replacement continues

A World Cup Winner and Premier League legend has emerged as a candidate for the vacant USMNT coaching position. 

After a shameful exit from the Copa America tournament, US Soccer answered a cry from the masses by dismissing Gregg Berhalter from coaching duties. Their embarrassing run saw the Americans dumped out of the group stage behind losses to Panama and Uruguay. 

With their ambitious search for a high profile coach to take the reigns from Berhalter in full swing, Fabrizio Romano revealed that Thierry Henry's name has been thrown in the hat as a potential candidate. 


'One more name the USMNT has discussed is Thierry Henry,' Romano wrote on Friday. 'Thierry Henry is now busy with the Olympics with the French national team, but after that, keep an eye on Thierry Henry because he's another name they discussed internally.' 

Besides the Arsenal legend, Romano also noted how Patrick Vieira's name has also been discussed in the same breath as the vacancy. Vieira mutually parted ways with French side Strasbourg on Thursday.

Henry reportedly showed interest in the US position before Berhalter was brought back for his second tenure after the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. 

The Frenchman works as a pundit for American network CBS Sports and is a key figure in their UEFA Champions League coverage. Additionally, he has managerial experience from coaching tenures at AS Monaco, CF Montreal, and a pair of assistant coaching stints with the Belgian national team. 

Furthermore, Henry is has coached the French U21 and U23 sides on multiple occasions. He will be spearheading France's team as they host the Olympics in Paris later this month.  

Henry reportedly turned down an offer to manage the French Women's national team to focus his sights on the then vacant USMNT position.

US Soccer's decision to rehire Berhalter instead backfired a year later. Not only did he fail to produce results with the American side, but candidates now seem uninterested in taking over the 'golden age' of the team. 

Canada manager Jesse Marsch, who was turned down for the job in 2023, wanted nothing to do with the mess Stateside after being linked to the position. 

'I'm not leaving this job,' Marsch said. 'I have no interest in the US job.' 

Before Marsch, US Soccer's hail Mary attempt to entice former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp to take the job reportedly bricked days after their Copa America exit. 

The ambitious search was also linked to Mauricio Pochettino, and Gareth Southgate - who led England to the EUFA Euros final before losing to Spain.
