It was a wonderful night bringing European club football's curtain raiser to all of you.

The outcome is what we all expected, Real Madrid got the job done once again to start their season off with a record-breaking sixth Super Cup.

Kylian Mbappe marked his much-awaited debut for Los Blancos with a goal after Federico Valverde gave Madrid the lead.

Atalanta had their moments, but overall they could not deal with the brilliance of Carlo Ancelotti's side.

After that, you feel it could be another year of dominance for Madrid.

Right then, I'm going to dash now. Thank you once again for following along with us at Mail Sport, we have plenty of action still to come this week, starting with the Premier League on Friday.

Whenever Jude Bellingham pulls on a Real Madrid shirt he exuberates excellence.

His first-half performance was nothing to shout about, but the same cannot be said about after the break.

The midfielder turned on the style and caused Atalanta heaps of problems in the second half.

He drove at the defence, kept the pace of attacks going, and even had a few good cracks at goal.

Also, his assist for Kylian Mbappe's first Real Madrid goal was simple but effective.

Well, I'm sure it won't last very long the league season is about to start.

Well, that's nice from the Real Madrid players.

They give the Atalanta team a guard of honour as the Italian side collect their silver medals.

I know it's a common gesture, but it's always nice to see that respect.

Atalanta don't exactly look buzzing as the medals go around their necks, but that is to be expected.

They've only gone and done it again...

With that victory, Real Madrid are now out on their own with six Super Cups compared to Barcelona and AC Milan's five.

I would say it's an incredible achievement, which it is, but it's what you expect from them at this point.

They just almost always get the job done in Europe.

It was just not Atalanta's night, was it?

There will be no second European trophy for the Italian side, they were well beaten.

They showed glimmers in the first half and were perhaps the better side in the opinion of many.

But in the second... my word, they were torn apart.

As soon as Real Madrid turned the screw they simply had no answer - they couldn't deal with the pace and directness.

The players don't look upset, though, they are currently thanking the fans with a big Iceland-style clap.

Gian Piero Gasperini looks kind of happy too.

I must admit, I thought Jude Bellingham had overcooked the pass to the French.

How wrong was I?

The ball was the perfect weight for Mabppe to run onto and smash into the top corner.

One of the better debut goals that I have seen.

Where else was I going to start?

Every time the camera pans over to Kylian Mbappe you can just see a huge grin on his face.

He was not at his best today by any stretch, but he is now up and running in a Real Madrid shirt in more ways than one.

A first goal and a first trophy in the white of Los Blancos.

Real Madrid win the Super Cup for a record sixth time!

There is a huge smile on Carlo Ancelotti's face as he goes to shake hands with Gian Piero Gasperini.

Kylian Mbappe will take all the headlines as he scored a fine goal on his debut for Los Blancos.

His goal sealed the deal after Federico Valverde opened the scoring in a blistering second-half performance.

Atalanta just couldn't deal with Madrid today.

Just like the first half.

He races away with a beaming smile on his face to celebrate, what a moment for the Frenchman.

The Atalanta goalkeeper is on smoke at the moment and he denies Jude Bellingham yet again.

The Real Madrid midfielder tries to sneak the ball under him from a tight angle, but the keeper is having none of it.

Now it's time for some changes.

Any Everton fans amongst you will know that Ben Godfrey made the switch to Italy earlier this summer, and now he comes on for Atalanta.

The defender replaces Davide Zappacosta, while Charles de Ketelaere also makes way, with Retegui replacing him.

Atalanta are suddenly falling apart and it's Musso who is keeping them alive.

This time he makes a fabulous stop to deny Jude Bellingham from the resulting corner.

Vinicus Jr races away and only has eyes for goal, surely he is going to add a quickfire second?

No! Juan Musso denies him one-on-one, what a brilliant save that is.

It's Federico Valverde who opens the scoring and he will never score an easier goal in a Real Madrid shirt.

Vinicius Jr rips Atalanta apart in the left inside the area before squaring it for the Uruguayan to tap into an empty net.

Now Jude Bellingham decides he's going to go for goal.

The midfielder is set up by a nifty little backheel from the boot of Federico Valverde, and then he sees his name in lights.

But he is leaning back and bends his effort slightly over the bar.

Bellingham then calls on the Real Madrid fans to make more noise...

Jude Bellingham is just so elegant.

The England man drifts past three or four Atalanta men in the middle before setting Real Madrid on their way.

It just seems effortless for the 20-year-old.

It seems the teams listened to me.

Both now seem much more lively and are gunning for that opener.

The chances are starting to flow already, let's hope they keep coming, eh?

Atalanta look destined to take the lead as Mario Pasalic gets on the end of a brilliant cross.

The Croatian midfielder gets his noggin on the ball and heads toward the top corner, and somehow Courtois gets across to turn the ball around.

Incredible goalkeeping.

Mbappe shows what he's about by racing down the left and straight at Davide Zappacosta.

He beats his man inside the box but then blasts way over the bar.

The ball heads closer to the second tier than the net.

Right then, we can sink our teeth back into the action now (see what I did there?).

Real Madrid get the ball rolling again and the Super Cup has just 45 minutes of normal time to go.

Considering all the attacking talent on show, I think it's fair we expected more from them that half.

In total, there were only five shots in the first 45 minutes. Yes, you read that right.

Vincius Jr, Rodrygo, Kylian Mbappe, and Jude Bellingham have only managed to muster three between them.

Come on lads, we want to be entertained.

Ademola Lookman has not looked himself today, so far.

The Atalanta man is not getting the same joy that he got against Bayer Leverkusen almost three months ago.

He has been limited to just a blocked shot that drifted well wide and a run that was blocked off by Antonio Rudiger.

If the Italian side want to win this match, they have to get him in the game more in the second half.

Thoughts on Kylian Mbappe, so far?

I think that he showed glimpses of what he has in his locker early on, but faded as the half went on.

It's clear he has chemistry with Vinicius Jr, but bar the shot he had blocked, the Frenchman hasn't caused too many problems for Atalanta.

We are yet to see that blistering pace, or his dribbling ability, at its full potential.

I'm sure he will take it up a notch after the interval, though.

There goes the whistle for half-time.

In truth, it's not been a cracker like I expected, but it's had its moments.

Both Real Madrid and Atalanta have hit the bar with Rodrygo coming closest just before the break.

But other than a handful of chances, both sides have struggled to get efforts on goal.

Including Kylian Mbappe, who hasn't gotten going yet.

Real Madrid almost prove me wrong instantly!

Rodrygo crashes an effort off the bar from just inside the area, and that's the closest Los Blancos have come.

The pass from Vinicius Jr into the feet of his compatriot is sensational, with the outside of his boot.

But the finish does not match it...

There will be two minutes of stopppage time.

Can either team score just before the break? I doubt it going by the last few minutes.

Ademola Lookman has not been involved in too much of the action, but he tries to break off the shackles.

The attacker decides to have a crack from distance and wins a corner for his troubles.

The resulting set-piece is dealt with comfortably, though.

And now those luscious locks are on the grass...

Why? Because Marten de Roon has just been caught on the ankle by Vinicius Jr on the ankle.

It's a nasty challenge with the studs up, so the Brazilian is handed a yellow card.

He tries to argue his case, but I'm not sure why. A blatant booking.

The camera has just cut to him shaking his head and all I can concentrate on are his luscious locks.

He obviously decided to grow them out over the summer and is even sporting a head band now.

Jude Bellingham has just landed on goalkeeper Juan Musso as he tries to flick the ball over his head.

The Englishman is so close to getting a toe on it but instead wipes out the Atalanta man.

He gets booked for it, which is harsh. His eyes were on the ball.

Ademola Lookman looks like he is through after a slack pass from Aurelien Tchouameni.

You just think Lookman will race away on his own, but Rudger flies across to take the ball away from him at the vital moment.

Incredible stuff from the German.

It turns out that Edetrson;'s shot was Atalanta's first of the game.

For whatever reason it feels like they have had more...

There have only been two shots between both teams, but that doesn't mean it hasn't been entertaining.

Eder Militao nearly has a howler!

The Brazilian nearly nets an own goal as heads onto his own bar from a Marten de Roon cross.

Then Ederson decides to have a pop from distance and it whistles narrowly wide of the mark.

Atalanta are turning the screw.

Atalanta really are ramping up the pressure.

Charles De Ketelaere has looked lively and he drives into the area from the right-hand side.

Just as he looks like he is going to pull the trigger, the ball is nicked away from him.

That's a decent chance gone at the last second.

Atalanta are starting to grow into this game.

Davide Zappacosta tries to cause problems on the right but his cross is cleared, he then gets the ball again but can't do any damage.

The Italian, who is wearing a weird net on his head after getting a cut on his head, is becoming Atalanta's main outlet.

Real Madrid are suddenly all over Atalanta.

Dani Carvajal curls a beautiful low cross into the six-yard box which is heading for Vincius Jr at the back stick.

But The Brazilian can't quite stretch enough to turn the ball home, he lunges too late.

What a block that is from Isak Hien.

It looks like Kylian Mbappe is set to open his real Madrid account as he gets on the end of Federico Valverde's low cross.

The number nine strikes the ball first time in the area and it's heading for goal, but Hien throws himself in front of the ball to block it.

I thought that was going in, I really did.

The Atalanta fans are having a belting time.

All the noise is being made by them at the moment, they are enjoying the occasion as much as they can.

The unlucky man on the receiving end of it is Atalanta's Ederson as he is penalised for a foul on Federico Valverde.
