Bruno Fernandes has issued a hilarious apology to Fantasy Football managers after the Manchester United midfielder missed two clear-cut chances in his side's 1-0 win over Fulham.

The Portuguese star should have scored twice in the space of six minutes in the first half as the Red Devils looked to assert their dominance at Old Trafford.

Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno gave the ball away to Casemiro in the 29th minute and redeemed himself by saving from United captain Fernandes with his body when he should have done better.

Then, soon after, Casemiro played a stunning first time to pass to a free Fernandes again and this time Leno saved with his left leg.

All this meant that the tricky attacking midfielder, who has bagged 79 goals and 67 assists in four years at the club, was left ruing his missed chances and Fantasy managers left ruing a disappointing return of just three points.

And Fernandes took to X, formerly Twitter, this morning to say sorry to those who selected him in their team and promised to make amends in the coming weeks.

He said: 'Nothing beats the feeling of being back at Old Trafford.

'Ps: fantasy league managers that trust me sorry for yesterday… I will repay you.'

Fernandes cost £8.5m in the popular online game, which attracts more than eight million players, making him the ninth most expensive player in the league.

The midfielder has been selected by 20 per cent of managers this year after scoring more than 150 points in each of his four impressive full seasons in a United shirt.

Joshua Zirkzee struck late on his United debut to hand the Red Devils a tense opening day victory over Fulham last night.

The forward, signed from Bologna as United's first arrival of the summer, met Alejandro Garnacho's cross and swept home a cool finish at the near post.

Red Devils goalkeeper Andre Onana had kept out Kenny Tete in a nervy first-half which saw his opposite number Leno produce three good saves to keep the scores level.

In front of big bosses Avie Glazer and new chief executive Omar Berrada, United managed to get the job done to start the season with three points and the final whistle was met with a roar of delight from the Old Trafford faithful.

Erik Ten Hag's side looked to be heading for a draw after a number of big misses in the game

After the game a relieved Ten Hag told Sky Sports: 'Subs are always very important and it is good to see him come on and score the winner, it is very good for the team process.

'It is very good, they have to be ready. Fulham are good on the ball but we pressed very well, we kept them under pressure and they had a lot of trouble and we created a lot of chances.

'The only criticism is we should have scored earlier, kill.'
