Forget Orlando and Miami - I've been to Florida over 40 times and there are plenty of great places to visit elsewhere. Here are my 13 picks, from 'serene islands' to wellness havens

Forget Orlando and Miami – Florida has so much more to offer.

So says travel expert Abby Dunn, who has travelled to Florida over 40 times and shared 13 locations outside of these cities you may have never heard of - but that have lots to offer holidaymakers.

Abby, marketing manager at Ocean Florida, reveals one of the few places in the world where people can swim year-round with manatees, ‘serene islands’ with ‘pristine shorelines’ and shopping havens brimming with designer boutiques.

Best for a family getaway  

Davenport

Staying in Davenport is likely to be 'more cost-effective than staying onsite at the parks', says Abby

Abby says: 'Only a short drive from Walt Disney World and close to Legoland and Universal Studios, Davenport is a great base for families visiting Florida’s famous attractions.'

She adds: 'There are so many options to choose from when it comes to villas in Florida, you’re sure to find something that meets your budget - plus it’s often more cost-effective than staying onsite at the parks. You’ll also have the luxury of enjoying your privacy, including your own pool. Perfect for leisurely sunny afternoons.'

Kissimmee

Abby says: 'There's plenty of parks and attractions to visit in Kissimmee, including water parks'

Kissimmee is 'another popular location for those visiting key parks and attractions', says Abby. She adds that the 'adventure spot is only a few minutes away from Walt Disney World Resort'. 

Abby says: 'There are plenty of other parks and attractions to visit in Kissimmee, too, including water parks and places to experience airboat rides, zip-lining and stunning walks through nature. You won’t be short on convenient amenities either, with shopping, dining and local events for the whole family.'

Best for a girls trip

Ybor City 

'Party-centric' Ybor City offers 'vibrant bars and clubs' and is a culinary hotspot. Plus, it's the 'cigar capital of the world'

Abby says: 'If you’re looking for a party-centric girls trip to Florida, Ybor City, Tampa, is a great option. This historic neighbourhood is famous for its vibrant bars and clubs and is sure to keep you dancing all week long.

'If you’re looking to immerse yourself in some culture, you won’t be short of it in this district. Known as the "Cigar Capital of the World", you can visit cigar shops, watch cigars being rolled, and even take a cigar factory tour for a truly unique experience.'

Ybor City is also a culinary hotspot and Abby recommends sampling an 'authentic Cuban sandwich' while there. 

 Fort Lauderdale

Groups can enjoy Fort Lauderdale's 'extensive canal system' and 'retail therapy', says Abby 

Fort Lauderdale is perfect for travellers who are in their 'relaxation era', says Abby. She adds: 'It provides plenty of beautiful beaches and things to do, but with less partying and busy crowds.

'Your group can take advantage of Las Olas Boulevard, a vibrant street filled with shops, restaurants and bars, while also enjoying its extensive canal system, which makes for peaceful boat tours around the city.' 

It's also home to one of the USA's largest shopping malls, Sawgrass Mills, which Abby says is 'perfect for those needing some retail therapy'. 

 Clearwater Beach

Abby says: 'If your girl group is a mix of activity lovers and relaxers then Clearwater Beach is a great choice. As well as offering powdery white sand beaches and crystal clear waters, there’s plenty of access to water activities such as parasailing and dolphin-watching, so the doers won’t get bored.

'It’s also in close proximity (five minutes) to the Clearwater Aquarium, which offers a great day out at a slower pace, while Busch Gardens Tampa Bay [theme park] is an hour's drive away - [it offers] thrilling rides to pass the afternoon. 

'A final perk - flying into Tampa over Orlando could save you around £80-£100 per person!'

Best for a romantic getaway

 Key West 

Abby says: 'There's plenty to explore and see in Key West, making it easy to fill your itinerary'

Key West, the USA's most southern city, has a 'real Caribbean influence' with 'stunning palm trees but a busy atmosphere', says Abby. She says it's 'perfect for couples looking for that hustle and bustle in a beautiful setting'. 

The Florida expert adds: 'There’s plenty to explore and see in Key West, making it easy to fill your itinerary. M

'Mallory Square hosts daily sunset celebrations including street performances and local vendors to enjoy, as well as plenty of oceanfront dining options. Couples looking for some adventure can enjoy snorkelling, diving and sailing in its waters.'

Anna Maria Island 

Abby recommends Anna Maria Island as the 'perfect romantic backdrop' for couples

Anna Maria Island is a 'breathtaking location' on the Gulf Coast, says Abby. She adds: 'Uncrowded beaches and a laid back atmosphere makes this spot great for couples looking for a tranquil experience. Whether you’re taking a sunset cruise, walking along the beach, or dining on the oceanfront, it really is the perfect romantic backdrop.'

But it's not just about relaxation at Anna Maria Island. Abby says: 'From shops and galleries to museums and historical sites, there’s plenty of local charm to explore. If that’s not enough though, Tampa is just 45 minutes away, so a day trip is always on the table.'

Best for a luxury getaway

Palm Beach 

Abby loves Palm Beach's 'fine dining', which is 'just moments away from stunning, white sandy beaches'

Abby says: 'Renowned for its high-end boutiques and designer stores along Worth Avenue, Palm Beach is great for those who enjoy a bit of retail therapy while away.'

When the shops have worn you out, Abby notes that there are plenty of award-winning restaurants to refuel in, 'just moments away from stunning, white sandy beaches'. 

Amelia Island 

'Visitors can spend their evenings dining in upscale restaurants [on Amelia Island] after an afternoon of floating in crystal clear waters,' says Abby

Amelia Island has a 'luxury feel' due to its '13 miles of pristine shoreline' and 'countless private beaches to enjoy', says Abby. 

She adds: 'Not only does this island offer tranquillity, there is plenty to see and do. Visitors can spend their evenings dining in upscale restaurants after an afternoon of floating in crystal clear waters, or horseback riding along the beach.'

Naples 

Naples offers 'tranquil downtime' says Abby. She says 'visitors can enjoy luxury sailing, boating and yachting'

Situated on the Gulf of Mexico, Naples 'offers a luxurious getaway no matter your favourite holiday activities', says Abby. 

She explains: 'Its pristine, white sand beaches are some of the most beautiful in the world, offering tranquil downtime, which can be enjoyed from private beach cabanas, to stunning sunset backdrops.

'Naples is also known for its world-class golf courses, designed by leading architects, as well as plenty of private and public clubs to choose from. Best for a wellness break  

 Marco Island

Abby says: 'The serene environment of Marco Island provides a peaceful setting, perfect for meditation, self-reflection and disconnecting from the hecticness of everyday life.

'There are plenty of healthy food options here too, with local restaurants serving fresh seafood and seasonal menus. If you’re interested in some daily movement after all that relaxation and delicious food, visitors can enjoy yoga on the beach, paddle boarding and even reconnecting with nature by exploring the nearby Everglades.'

Sarasota

'Grounding yourself with nature in Sarasota is a breeze,' explains Abby

Sarasota is a 'no brainer when it comes to wellness travel', says Abby. 

She explains: 'Visitors can enjoy rejuvenating spa treatments including massages, body wraps and facials, before hitting one of the many yoga studios to truly find your zen.

'Grounding yourself with nature is also a breeze here, with plenty of chances for scenic walks and peaceful watersports.
