John Mulaney and Olivia Munn had their secret wedding officiated by an Oscar-nominated actor who once starred with the bride on TV

John Mulaney and Olivia Munn had their secret wedding officiated by an Oscar-nominated actor - who once starred with the bride on TV.

It emerged on Wednesday that the couple, who have a two-year-old son called Malcolm, exchanged vows in a private ceremony over the weekend.

Their nuptials took place in New York State at the private home of one of the couple's friends, following a three-year romance.

Malcolm and the witness were the only guests present when John, 41, and Olivia, 44, tied the knot, an insider informed People.

Now the identity of the man who performed their wedding has been unveiled - a decade after he acted with Olivia on the HBO drama The Newsroom.

Sam Waterston, who earned an Oscar nomination for the 1984 movie The Killing Fields, has been confirmed as John and Olivia's officiant.

Created by The Social Network writer Aaron Sorkin, The Newsroom followed the behind-the-scenes drama of a left-leaning cable news network.

Sam starred as Charlie Skinner, the ornery head of the news division, while Olivia featured as the whip-smart finance reporter Sloan Sabbith.

With a formidable cast including Jeff Daniels and Jane Fonda, The Newsroom ran for three seasons on HBO from 2012 through 2014.

John and Olivia's wedding came four months after she revealed she had waged a battle with an aggressive form of breast cancer and undergone a double mastectomy.

Over the course of her grueling treatment, she also had a hysterectomy, as well as having her fallopian tubes and ovaries excised, she told Vogue.

Before doing so, she had her eggs frozen in order to preserve some chance that she and John could try in vitro fertilization for more children.

'After my diagnosis, we decided to try one more round of egg retrievals and hoped it was a good month,' she explained.

'John and I talked about it a lot and we don't feel like we're done growing our family, but didn't know if I would have to do chemotherapy or radiation.'

Their efforts resulted in two healthy embryos, and when they received the news of their success, 'John and I just started crying,' Olivia remembered.

'It was just so exciting because not only did we get it in one retrieval, but it also meant that I didn't have to keep putting myself at risk. It was just amazing.'

Olivia was diagnosed with her illness in early 2023 and had four surgeries in the space of 10 months, driving the illness into remission.

In order to reduce the risk of recurrence, she then started hormone suppression therapy that caused her to go into early menopause.

Olivia and John's romance first went public in mid-2021, on the heels of the comedian's split from his first wife Anna Marie Tendler.

He announced that Olivia was pregnant in September of that year and they welcomed Malcolm into the world just before Thanksgiving.

The baby's arrival was the culmination of a whirlwind 12 months, in which John's marriage collapsed and he went to rehab for alcoholism and cocaine addiction.

When he revealed that his girlfriend was expecting, John declared: 'Olivia and this baby have helped save me from myself in this early journey out of recovery.'

Malcolm was born in late November 2021 - about nine months after John asked Anna Marie for a divorce, according to Page Six

When news of John and Anne Marie's separation went public in May 2021, she issued a statement saying: 'I am heartbroken that John has decided to end our marriage. I wish him support and success as he continues his recovery.'

A few days after his split from Anna Marie was announced, a People source claimed John had become romantically involved with Olivia.

Journalist AJ Benza alleged on his podcast Fame Is A B**** that Anna Marie was at rehab at Silver Hill in Connecticut around the same time John was in treatment.

Shortly thereafter, a Page Six source claimed that emotional problems and 'eating disorders' had caused Anna Marie to go to Silver Hill.

The insider claimed Anna Marie declined to discuss any marital problems she may have been having but insisted it was 'clear she suffered during their marriage.'

Meanwhile, when John entered rehab at the end of 2020, Olivia was one of the many celebrities who sent him well wishes.

'Sending SO MUCH love and support to John Mulaney,' the Love Wedding Repeat actress wrote on Twitter. 'You got this.'

Meanwhile Olivia's dating history includes Suicide Squad actor Joel Kinnaman and NFL quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

She told Variety in 2020 that 'I never have ever been that girl' who has the perfect wedding mapped out for herself in her head.

'The idea of getting married has always made me a little….It gives me….I don’t know what that word is for...I’m like: "It’s hot in here, right?" It’s like: "Really?"...Yeah, I just feel like to pick one person forever,' said Olivia.
