A Seinfeld star looked unrecognisable as he appeared on Australian breakfast television on Friday.

Patrick Warburton, known for his portrayal of Elaine Benes' on again/off again boyfriend David Puddy on the hit 90s sitcom, rocked a very different look as he did an interview on the Today show.

The sitcom star is in Australia to appear at Metro Comic-Con, and spoke about his iconic role as the 'jock' boyfriend of Julia Louis-Dreyfus' character.

Sporting a thick 80s-style moustache and a black baseball cap, Patrick said he had always been a fan of Seinfeld before he was cast on the comedy show.

'I remember sitting on the couch watching it with my wife, we would watch it religiously on Thursdays, and I remember looking at her and saying "why can't I get on this show?"'

'Two weeks later I went in to read for Jerry [Seinfeld] and Larry David and it went well and they brought me on.'

'It was just one episode. They liked the character and brought be back again,' he added.

Warburton also explained that contractual obligations with another network prevented him from being more of a regular character on the show.

'They asked me about availability and I couldn't do it because I was on a CBS show at the time and they wouldn't let me do a show on another network,' he explained.

'That was frustrating, but then they cancelled that and I came back on the ninth and final season.'

Patrick played the boorish Puddy in 10 episodes of the sitcom, which ran from 1989-1998.

He first appeared in season six as Jerry's mechanic and current boyfriend of Elaine.

A recurring gag in the show is that Elaine and Puddy break-up and get back together so frequently that it becomes inconsequential.

In the first episode of season nine, the pair split, get back together again and break-up again, all during the course of an international flight and taxi ride to the airport.

Warburton has since become an accomplished voice actor for animated shows such as Family Guy, The Emperor's New Groove, and Scooby Doo.

More recently, he has appeared as Lemony Snicket in the Netflix adaptation of the children's book series, A Series of Unfortunate Events.
