Halle Berry, 57, admits she 'hated' Catwoman backlash after DC film flopped in the box office 20 years earlier: 'It's my failure'

Halle Berry reflected on her 2004 film, Catwoman, and admitted that she 'hated' the backlash the movie received upon its release 20 years earlier.

The Oscar winner, 57 - who recently exited from the Kim Kardashian-led Hulu legal drama series All's Fair - opened up about the DC film during an interview with Entertainment Weekly to celebrate its 20th anniversary.

Catwoman premiered in theaters in July 2004 - and on a budget of $100 million, raked in $82.4 million in the box office. The film also garnered negative reviews, and currently has a score of 8% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Berry - who received a Razzie for Worst Actress after starring in film - revealed, 'I didn't love [the backlash].'

'Being a Black woman, I'm used to carrying negativity on my back, fighting, being a fish swimming upstream by myself. I'm used to defying stereotypes and making a way out of no way.'

'I didn't want to be casual about it, but I went and collected that Razzie, laughed at myself, and kept it moving,' Halle explained.

'It didn't derail me because I've fought as a Black woman my whole life, 'she continued to the outlet.

'A little bad publicity about a movie? I didn't love it, but it wasn't going to stop my world or derail me from doing what I love to do.'

The beauty later added, 'I hated that it got all put on me, and I hate that, to this day, it's failure. I know I can carry it. I still have a career 20 years later. It's just part of my story.'

'That's okay, and I've carried other failures and successes. People have opinions, and sometimes they're louder than others. You just have to keep moving.'

Producer Denise Di Novi also joined in on the conversation, and expressed that 'negativity' towards the film began with Berry's Catwoman costume.

'That was the first thing that started the negativity. It was an early shot before we'd perfected it. It was so different than what people were used to in the other movie.'

Denise added, 'A catsuit, by definition, everything is covered up. We thought it'd be cool to be more rock & roll and bare. Halle was famous for wearing a bikini in her Bond movie, and we were like, why not?'

'People had such a reaction to it, which is so ridiculous. We had the famous Colleen Atwood helping us with just that costume. Halle had a lot of input. I still think it's cool and a lot more modern!'

Halle also stated, 'Fans were upset about the suit. It was something different, but in our minds, why keep remaking Catwoman if you're not going to take risks and bring something different to it?'

'The beauty was that it was better suited for my version of her, my body, who I was, and my sensibilities.'

Berry further reflected on taking on the role of the superhero in the film which was directed by Pitof. 'I always thought the idea of Catwoman saving women from a face cream felt a bit soft.'

'All the other superheroes save the world; they don't just save women from cracked faces.'

She added, 'I always knew that was a soft superhero plight, but at that time in my career, I didn't have the agency I have today or belief that I could challenge that, so I went along with it.'

In regards to filming the movie, Halle said that the production 'went smoothly' and that 'it was a great shoot.'

'I had the time of my life. I worked my a** off to embody a cat in so many ways, psychologically and physically.'

'I never thought it went awry; I just thought that maybe it wouldn't feel as big as other movies because the plot stakes aren't as high,' The Call actress continued.

Three years before taking on the leading role in Catwoman, Berry starred in the 2001 film, Monster's Ball. The following year, she won an Oscar for Best Actress due to her performance in the movie.

Despite Catwoman flopping in the box office, Halle revealed back in 2021 that she would be willing to direct a remake of the DC film.

'I would love to direct Catwoman,' she told Jake's Takes at the time, per IndieWire, and later added, 'I wish I could go back and reimagine Catwoman and redo that. Have a redo on that, now knowing what I know [about directing].'

Her recent discussion comes shortly after it was revealed that Berry exited the Kim Kardashian-led Hulu legal drama series titled, All's Fair.

It was reported last week that Berry and Glenn Close, 77, would join the reality-star-turned actress Kardashian, 43 in the series.

However, a new report reveals that Berry is dropping out of the project due to scheduling conflicts, via Variety.

It would have been one of the rare major TV roles in her illustrious career, following the CBS sci-fi series Extant, which ran two seasons from 2014-2015.

It's unclear at the moment who will step in to replace Berry in the series, and it's unknown what character she'll be playing.

She was slated to serve as an executive producer as well, though it's unclear if that will still be the case now that she has backed out of starring.

This season of The Kardashians on Hulu revealed that American Horror Story creator came to Kris Jenner's home to pitch this series, after she starred in AHS: Delicate.

The series was first announced back in December, the first series under Murphy's new overall deal at Disney.

The show will follow Kim playing the powerful divorce lawyer in Los Angeles, who runs a successful all-female law firm.

The show will be inspired by Kardashian's actual lawyer, Laura Wasser, who represented her in divorce proceedings with Kanye West and Kris Humphries.

All's Fair is created by Jon Robin Baitz (Brothers & Sisters, Feud: Capote Vs. The Swans) and Joe Baken.

Kardashian, her mother/manager Kris Jenner and Murphy will all executive produce with Baitz and Baken. Jamie Pachino, Laura Greene, and Richard Levine will also serve as writers and executive producers.
