KFC revamps its $5 meal deal as it battles McDonald's and Wendy's - but there's a catch

KFC has fired the lastest salvo in the fast food value wars - with a $5 meal deal plus other offers. 

Like most fast food restaurants, KFC has seen sales fall this year - and is hoping the offer will lure back fast food fans. 

McDonald's, Burger King and Wendy's all already have near identical $5 meal deals - with a choice of a burger, four chicken nuggets, fries and a drink.

But there is a catch with KFC's three different options - pictured below - in that none come wtih a drink. 

The first has eight chicken nuggets, fries and two sauces. The second is a bowl of mashed potatoes, sweeet chorn and nuggetswith gravy and cheeses. The final is two pieces of fried chiicken plus mashed potato and gravy and a biscuit.

'As customers are looking for more value from brands, we're expanding our Taste of KFC lineup with new fan favorites like our nuggets and famous bowls, each for just $5,' said Nick Chavez, the company's marketing boss. 

'These Taste of KFC Deals offer three choices – with something for everyone – at an incredible price.'

In addition to the $5 deals, KFC continues to offer its popular '$10 Tuesdays' deal - a bucket full of eight pieces of drumsticks and thighs. 

Every day of the week, customers can also grab the $20 family deal – six pieces of chicken on the bone (two drumsticks, two thighs, one breast and one wing), four sides, and four biscuits.

Deals were all recently rated for value by experts. Taco Bell came out best.

McDonald's $5 meal deal came out in June and includes either a McChicken or McDouble, four-piece chicken nuggets, fries and a drink. 

Rival Burger King's $5 Your Way Meal is very similar to McDonald's. Customers get a choice of one of three sandwiches - a Whopper Jr, a Bacon Cheeseburger or Chicken Jr - plus four chicken nuggets, fries and a soft drink. 

Wendy's has a $3 breakfast offer and also a four-item $5 meal similar to McDonald's and BK's. 

Popular sandwich chain Jimmy John's is offering a $10 Total Package Meal, which includes an 8-inch sandwich, a fountain drink, chips and a cookie or brownie.

Lsat week, White Castle was the latest burger chain to enter the fast food price war - slashing the price of its famed sliders to the lowest amount in a decade.

Bosses point out that ten cheese sliders for $7.99 is a price not seen since 2011. The deal is $8.99 in New York and New Jersey.

Casual dining chains such as Applebee's have also waded into the value meal market in an attempt to pinch customers from fast food rivals such as McDonald's. 

Applebee's move to compete with fast food chains echoes that of Chilli's which also recently its new 'Big Smasher' - a bigger version of the Big Mac - that comes with fries and a drink for under $10.
