King Charles and Queen Camilla will visit the Channel Islands next month - their first visit since His Majesty's accession.

The royal couple will travel to Jersey on July 15 and then to Guernsey on July 16 for the two-day whistlestop trip.

It marks the 75-year-old monarch's second overseas trip since his cancer diagnosis, having travelled to France for a D-Day event last week, and his first overnight trip since receiving the health news.

The last time a monarch visited the Channel Islands was in 2005. The King is known as the Duke of Normandy on the Channel Islands - dating from when William the Conqueror's son, Henry I, seized the Duchy of Normandy, including the islands, in 1106.

Deputy Bailiff of Jersey Robert MacRae told the States Assembly the King and Queen will visit the States Assembly and Royal Court during their day trip.

The King resumed public-facing duties at the end of April and has a number of high-profile engagements over the coming weeks, including Trooping the Colour, Garter Day and Royal Ascot.

The royal couple's post-General Election trip will end the day before the planned State Opening of Parliament on July 17, which is also Camilla's 77th birthday.

On their two-day trip, the King and Queen will highlight the relationship between the Channel Islands and the Crown which stretches back centuries.

The Bailiff of Jersey's office said the visit would be mainly focused in St Helier, with further details of the day's events to be shared nearer the time.

Lieutenant-Governor of Jersey Jerry Kyd said he was "absolutely delighted" about the King and Queen's visit.

He said: "Their visit is a reflection of the ancient and very personal relationship which has existed between Jersey, as one of the Crown’s oldest possessions, and the Monarch, which stretches back eight centuries.

"As His Majesty’s personal representative on this wonderful island, I am extremely proud of the island, and the enduring affection and loyalty of its people to the Crown."

On Guernsey, the King and Camilla will attend a special sitting of the States of Deliberation and ancient ceremony of homage to the monarch, held outdoors on the St Peter Port seafront where islanders can watch the events.

Charles and Camilla will also head to the Crown Pier to learn about the island's heritage and traditions, biodiversity initiatives, local food, and the work to promote the language of Guernesiais - also known as Guernsey French.
