The Sacrifice #1

The Tithing

Rate this book
An ancient curse. Two families bound. A forbidden love.

When the Wildbloods presented their daughters to me on the night of the Tithing, they knew what was to come for the chosen girl.

The crescent moon that marked Willow made her mine. I had no choice but to take her.

Destiny determined our fates long before we were born, laying our roles out for us.

A Sacrifice would be made. A Tithe paid. Only then would our families be free, at least until the next payment came due.

I would have done my duty as Penitent. I tried.

But no one counted on the lion falling in love with the lamb.

And loving Willow could cost me everything.

We are back in the world of IVI Society - if you have not read the other books within this world then I highly suggest you do! You will have a much larger understanding of the world and the mindset within this secret society.

I didn't know what to expect when I started this and tbh I did not really pay attention to the synopsis when I signed up for the ARC. All I needed to know was this duet would exist and that's it.

There is a lot of mystery about the setting and the story - we know very little about when it all starts, and we have a lot more questions.

Willow and Azrael come from two different families and a massive history between them that dates back centuries. Willow will be basically sacrificed as a Tithe to Azrael, and they are forced to marry based on this ongoing weird tradition.

Willow's family is descendent to Witches and Azrael's family comes from the reason the original witch died and also one of the founding family of the IVI society though he is a massive presence within it. I should mention this is not fantasy at all.

The fact remains that the MC's are sworn enemies and forced to marry, they do not start off on the right foot and Azrael tries to live up to her expectations, but things do not go as planned. Their chemistry is off the charts, and you can sense that this will be an issue later on since there are other things (spoilers) that happen within this Tithe/Sacrifice that Willow has no idea but we the reader do.

It's pretty hard to explain this book or review it without giving up the secrets. There are a lot of elements within the story, and you’ll need to read it to truly understand the depths of it all.

I have theories and I am pretty sure TWO of them are correct because the damn grandma is evil, but I will not shocked if more of my theories turn out to be right.

The book ends in a cliffhanger but it was not one I thought would happen so that was a nice surprise and thankfully we do not have to wait long for the final book.

A curse. An offering. An unexpected bond.

For hundreds of years, Wildblood women are marked at birth as a sacrifice to a Delacroix man.

Azrael and Willow have accepted their fate in the name of saving their families. Yet there’s an inextricable connection between the Penitent and his Sacrifice.

I loved the fast pace and white hot chemistry. Not only do we have the suspense from the main story, but there’s also a secondary storyline adding to the drama and mystery. I’m so invested in this story and have never been more grateful that the window between releases is short!!

He’s a beautiful terror, this man. It’s undeniable at the moment. I hate him, but even I can admit this is a sight to behold.

What a ride this book was. Admittedly, it took me a hot second to get into. It had a very spooky, gothic feel to it, which I wasn't prepared for but enjoyed immensely. But because of that, it did take me about 15% to get into the story. But once I did? I was completely incapable of putting it down for even a second.

If you've read the rest of the IVI series, this one had a significantly different feel to it. Yes. it has all the dark secret society vibes, but it was also more. The Wildbloods and the Delacroix have a history that spans centuries. It's a history riddled in pain and sacrifice and a history that's led to a sacrifice bound by an ancient curse. That curse is what leads Willow to be the next Tithing. To agree to an arranged marriage with a man who she only knows will bring her nothing but pain. Her witch ancestor set a curse in motion that has led to unimaginable sacrifices by their blood lines.

Azrael has no love lost to his family name or his cold hearted grandmother. But to protect his siblings, he'll do what needs to be done and marry the Wildblood. What he doesn't foresee it to be so thoroughly drawn into her orbit and fall under her spell. Willow may be young and innocent, but she's no pushover. And the more she pushes Azrael, the more he needs to push back. And the push and pull between them was utterly delicious.

Of course the cliffhanger is painfully jaw dropping but luckily there's not a long wait for book two. So I'll just be slowly rocking myself in a corner until it releases, thank you very much.

One major problem I faced with "The Tithing" was the uncomfortable and borderline problematic exploration of its themes. It's not that I only enjoy vanilla stories—I'm open to diverse narratives with darker elements. However, what I found in this book wasn't just unconventional but unhealthy in many aspects. Even the explicit scenes, lacking proper buildup, come off as awkward and cringe-worthy, leaving a distinctly unpleasant taste in my mouth.

Immature characters, lack of communication and if it wasn’t for the sexy scenes, there probably wouldn’t be much of a connection.
H has to kill the h within a year of being married otherwise his young sister could die. (We all know is his grandma who is doing foul play but 🤷🏻‍♀️)
Anyway, the h had a relationship when she was 16 but it turned out to be a psycho who wanted to rape and kill her for being a witch. This other guy continues to stalk the h until he can get his hands on her again. The h won’t tell the H, her husband, about this for fear that he could judge or blame her. A lot could’ve been solved if they just talked… but why? It’s easier to stay mad at each other.
In the end, the h tries to leave the H but is caught by the other guy who was trying to kill her. That’s the end.
Somewhat silly and probably won’t read the second book.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

I received an ARC in exchange for a honest review.

It's no secret I'm a huge A Zavarelli fan and when she gets together with Natasha Knight, magic happens. That's exactly what this book is. Magic.

It held my attention from the prologue all the way to the very end. That prologue really captured me, I must say.

I loved how slow it moved, its definitely a slow burn. Which is one of my favorite genres. Azrael And Willow were really sweet together. Their chemistry and banter was so entertaining.

Willow might be my favorite female character I've read about in a long time. She was so strong. She never gave up and she never let anyone get to her.

I hope it won't be too long until the next book is released cause I cannot wait.

The Tithing is the first installment of the Sacrifice Duet, set in the IVI Society world by Natasha Knight and A Zavarelli. You don’t have to read the other books in the IVI Society world to read The Tithing, as the introductory note from the authors in the beginning of the book will explain what you need to know.

The story kicks off with some historical references and sequences important to note later on – the history behind the Wildblood curse. The reader is then immediately brought to the present where the two families involved in the ancient curse still abide by those traditions in modern day – a Wildblood woman, marked by a crescent-shaped birthmark, to be taken by a Delacroix man. History shows that no Wildblood woman has lived past a year under the Delacroix family rule, and our female protagonist, Willow, knows how grim her future appears.

Willow is a fiery redhead with a spitting personality to match her looks. Her family still practices earth magic, and she does as well. I admired her character. Willow, despite going into the situation as an underdog, didn’t lose her sense of self, while also going about certain situations in an intelligent way. I consider her a strong FMC - caring for others, maintaining a sense of vulnerability to Azrael, and courage in spite of her fears. She has a secret that she’s withholding from Azrael, and I’m curious to find out the details behind it.

“I’ll tell you this… if there is a God or gods, they aren't nearly as vengeful as their flock are. In fact, I’d imagine they’re quite sick of the evils performed in their name.”

Azrael is a character that I think a lot of people can relate to, and that is because he regularly puts others needs and desires ahead of his own. However, is he prioritizing the right people? Azrael has this strong sense of duty to old traditions. It’s clear that he cares about certain members of his family and would go to extreme lengths to protect them. He's clearly struggling internally with what he feels compelled to do, and his feelings towards Willow. I’m really intrigued as to how he will navigate the inner conflict I anticipate he’s feeling right now at the end of the book.

“Now is not the time for sentiment, for conscience. Neither has helped us in the past. Now is the time to take what is owed.”

While reading this story, I couldn’t help but think that this book felt like a mashup of Pepper Winters Indebted series and themes of witchcraft. It was a fast-paced, binge-able read with an eerie vibe, and I'm anxious to see what the authors have come up with for our characters in book 2, The Penitent. This book ends on a cliffhanger, so be prepared to dive right into book 2 if you like book 1!

I received an advance reader copy (ARC) of this book, and these thoughts are my own.

Holy heck! What did I just read? And how evil these authors are to leave me hanging like that!

This story caught my attention from the first page and I could not put it down! The background the Wildbloods and Delacroix shared had me transfixed. I needed all the answers to my questions but before I knew it, I was caught up in the fiery relationship developing between Azrael and Willow and I found myself with new questions, some strong suspicions and a whole new obsession.

Willow not only won my heart but she has claimed Azrael’s as well with her sassy attitude and her outlook at life. I loved how she faced her situation head on as well as her sweet nature with her sisters and Bec.

May be an image of 1 person

Azrael is following his destiny and yet he carries a certain attitude that leaves me wondering where exactly he stands in the middle of this wild mystery. He’s a strong alpha male hero and I absolutely LOVE his ownership over Willow. The chemistry between them is like quicksilver and neither of them can fight it.

This is a fast read with lightning quick action that keeps the story moving. It has a strong angsty pull to it making me wonder when things are all going to fall apart and then I realize it’s all happening with one heck of a cliffhanger. This is an awesome enemies-to-lovers story and I can’t wait for its conclusion!

***4,5 "Little Witch!!!" stars***

"Now is not the time for sentiment, for conscience. Neither has helped us in the past.
Now is the time to take what is owed."

A beautiful, enchanting new story set in the world of IVI, a world that I personally love very much!!!
I am addicted to this world and I am over enjoying every new addition set into this world by this amazing duo!!!
This time, Mrs Knight and Mrs Zavarelli had brought us an old curse and a sacrifice that needs to be done in the name of family... An appealing atmosphere full of mysteries and a touch of magic are completing the magnificent tale of Azrael and his little witch's, Willow...

"I am the monster who will loom over her when I've taken what I must.
When she's paid what she must.
She is the sacrifice.
And she is mine."

It's been hundred of years since the curse that was placed above the Delacroix family...
And from that moment, every generation of Wildbloods who carries the mark have to pay the price... and the penitent needs to do his duty and make the sacrifice that will save his family's lives...
In the night of Tithing, Azrael knows that he needs to carry on with this ugly duty... Willow Wildblood who is carrying the mark is his sacrifice and he needs to bring her on her knees for the curse to cease until the next time....
Willow is accepting her cruel fate, but that doesn't mean that she will fall without a battle...
What neither of them had taken in consideration is that plans can change when the hearts are involved!!!

"I'm about to marry my family's sworn enemy and live beneath his rule until tragedy inevitably snatches me away."

I loved this story!!! It was mystifying, atmospherical and very charming!!!
Azrael and Willow are both victims to a fate that they never asked for...
They both needs to sacrifice everything in the name of their family!!!
But when the blood is about to be spilled, their hearts are singing in a different tune... A tune that they need to stop and listen, but there are too many things that are holding them hostages!!!
I am very curious of how this story will end up cause too many things are happening on the background!!!
The only sure thing is that Willow and Azrael have stolen my heart and I need more of them!!!

"As long as I live and breathe, I will protect you. I will keep you safe." {Azrael}

"He told me I could trust him. Now I know that was a lie." {Willow}

I have to say it..
The Tithing is basically Taken by Natasha Knight with minor changes and set in the Society world.

From the synopsis:

“I’m one of four Willow daughters. He’s the first-born son of the Scafoni family. And we have history.

For generations, the Scafoni family have demanded a sacrifice of us. A daughter to atone for sins so old, we don’t even remember what they are anymore.

But when you have as much money as they do, you don’t play by the rules. You make them.

And Sebastian Scafoni makes all the rules.

The moment I saw him, I knew he would choose me. Even though the mark on my sheath declared me unclean. Even though my beautiful sisters stood beside me, offered to him, he still chose me.

He made me his.
And then he set out to break me”

They even recycled the name of the female MC.

0 romance, 0 relationship development, 0 significant moments between the MC. All show, no tell with some smut and a recycled plot.

It's not a wonder that I loved this book. I'm just so familiar with these two author's writing and stories that when they decide to co-write, I know for sure I'm in for a great time.

And for a great time I was. This book was Masterfully dark and sensually beautiful.

The Tithing is the first book in this brand new duet written by two very well known dark romance authors. It is set in the IVI world.

This book is about Willow Wildblood and Azrael DeLacroix. Two characters destined to be enemies due to their bloodlines.

Since Willow was born, her fate was forfeit. Bearing the birthmark every Wildblood Sacrifice presents, everyone in her family knows that when the time comes, the eldest member of the DeLacroix clan will come to collect his Tithe to present it as a sacrifice to their Divine Figure.

“Then you’re going to choose to submit to having your wrists bound. Hell, maybe I’ll even collar you, and you’re going to choose to bow your head low when I do.”
“I will never bow to you!”

Willow was such a great female lead. She is feisty, she is strong and she does not back down from any challenge. I particularly was always looking forward to reading about her encounters with a certain despicable character. May she rot in hell.
Azrael is a tortured man. He know grief and he will do anything to avoid losing any more dear ones. I loved the man but I sure wanted to PUNCH him countless of times for how blind he is. My man, open your eyes.
It's a rare occurrence to read a book where the male main character makes me infuriated. But not everyone can be bright as Willow. It's just fact.

I loved the plot, the main characters. I loved the secondary characters quite a deal even a certain vulture. Good job at making me hate you. I love the vibes this book gives that something perversely wrong is happening but I will have to follow in the footsteps of the main characters as they unveil it.

The ending was glorious. I mean I know how Natasha Knight loves to throw us a butterball at the endings of first books and this one did not disappoint.

Anyways, if you love stories about centuries old debts and strong and complex characters, this one is for you.

Thank you to Give Me Books PR for the amazing opportunity to read and review this much antecipated eARC. Looking forward to the conclusion of this story. I have no idea how I will survive.

Four ⭐ for the uniqueness given that this is part of The Society. It's a bit insta in the connection between the two characters but they too are confused by it, so it's not off-putting. I think I would be more satisfied if there was more dialogue between the two MCs; or if they spent more time together. Hopefully we get a lot more relationship development and communication between Azrael and Willow in the second book after they resolve the cliffhanger we're left with.

On the night of The Tithing, Willow Wildblood became Azrael Delacroix’s property. Their pasts are tied together but are they capable of following the laws set forth for their future or can they change destiny? This is a secret society with a history entwined within a curse. Set in the Society World it can be read as its own stand-alone duet and has a background connection to Salem. An enjoyable enemies to lovers mystery that slowly unravels into a shocking cliffhanger getting you ready for what’s to come. Told in dual POV

this was a story i've read a hundred times over within other books.

the plot essentially boiled down to an alpha-douche-guy and fake-rebellious-girl who fell in love despite their families being sworn enemies. which could've been tolerable, had the writing been redeeming enough to make such a recycled premise interesting. instead it came off as cheesy and predictable. the characters felt flat, each being very one-dimensional and lacking any sort of depth to connect me to their storylines. sadly it all read as way too contrived to stomach.

bottom line- this one was a miss for me.

This one is hard to rate, it’s not a terrible just not for me. I’m fan of these authors but super dark paranormal romance isn’t really my thing.

I found it boring at times and struggled to connect with the characters. I found myself frustrated by the H several times, clearly unable to focus and see what was right in front of his face.

This book is fast paced, gripping and compelling. I could not put it down. The mystery surrounding the curse is bizarre and scary. Salome is one deranged and certifiable grandma. Something is truly wrong with her. I feel bad for Willow and Azrael. Their families rituals have them vulnerable. I can't wait for book two.
