Jonathan Safran Foer
“I regret that it takes a life to learn how to live.”
Jonathan Safran Foer, Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close

Richelle Mead
“Strigoi have red eyes, " I explained. "Do his eyes look red?"
The boy leaned forward. "No. They're brown. "
"What else do you know about Strigoi?" I asked.
"They have fangs like us, " the boy replied.
"Do you have fangs?" I asked Dimitri in a singsong voice. I had a feeling this was already-covered territory, but it took on a new feel when asked from a child's perspective. Dimitri smiled--a full, wonderful smile that caught me off guard.
"Okay, Jonathan, " said his mother anxiously. "You asked. Let's go now. "
"Strigoi are super strong, " continued Jonathan, who possibly aspired to be a future lawyer. "Nothing can hurt them. " Jonathan fixed Dimitri with a piercing gaze. "Are you super strong? Can you be hurt?"
"Of course I can, " replied Dimitri. "I'm strong, but all sorts of things can still hurt me. "
And then, being Rose Hathaway, I said something I really shouldn't have to the boy. "You should go punch him and find out. " Jonathan's mother screamed again, but he was a fast little bastard, eluding her grasp. He ran up to Dimitri before anyone could stop him--well, I could have--and pounded his tiny fist against Dimitri's knee. Then, with the same reflexes that allowed him to dodge enemy attacks, Dimitri immediately feinted falling backward, as though Jonathan had knocked him over. Clutching his knee, Dimitri groaned as though he were in terrible pain. Several people laughed, and by then, one of the other guardians had caught hold of Jonathan and returned him to his near-hysterical mother. As he was being dragged away, Jonathan glanced over his shoulder at Dimitri. "He doesn't seem very strong to me. I don't think he's a Strigoi. " This caused more laughter”
Richelle Mead, Spirit Bound

Cassandra Clare
“But Jace", Clary said. "Valentine taught him more than just fighting. He taught him languages, and how to play the piano"
"That was Jocelyn's influence." Sebastian said her name unwillingly, as if he hated the sound of it. "She thought Valentine ought to be able to talk about books, art, music...not just killing things. He passed that on to Jace."
A wrought iron blue gate rose to their left. Sebastian ducked under it and beckoned Clary to follow him. She didn't have to duck but went after him, her hands stuffed into her pockets. "What about you?" she asked.
He held up his hands. They were unmistakably her mother's hands - dexterous, long-fingered, meant for holding a brush or a pen. "I learned to play the instruments of war, " he said, "and paint in blood. I am not like Jace.”
Cassandra Clare, City of Lost Souls

Cassandra Clare
“What do you think it would have been like if Valentine had brought you up along with me? Would you have loved me?"
Clary was very glad she had put her cup down, because if she hadn't, she would have dropped it.
Sebastian was looking at her not with any shyness or the sort of natural awkwardness that might be attendant on such a bizarre question, but as if she were a curious, foreign life-form.
"Well," she said. "You're my brother. I would have loved you. I would have...had to.”
Cassandra Clare, City of Lost Souls

Tamora Pierce
“I love you, Jonathan," she whispered.
A long arm snaked around her, and he pulled her against his side.
"I know," he said. "I just wanted to be sure you knew it, too.”
Tamora Pierce, In the Hand of the Goddess

Cassandra Clare
“There was a man once who said that mothers carry the key of our souls with them all our lives. But you threw mine away”
Cassandra Clare, City of Lost Souls

Rachel Caine
“You're dead," I repeated. "So why are you in my dream?"
He raised the bill of his olive drab ball cap with one finger. " Good question. Morbid, isn't it?"
"What?"
"Dreaming about dead peolpe. Creepy. You ever see a therapist about that?"
"I'm not -" Even in dreams, I couldn't win an argument. Even when he was dead.”
Rachel Caine, Firestorm

Jonathan Haidt
“The rider evolved to serve to the elephant.”
Jonathan Haidt, The Happiness Hypothesis: Finding Modern Truth in Ancient Wisdom

Kim Harrison
“His attitude, though always bad, has changed since he helped me prep the Pandora charm for Morgan. He thinks I'm falling for her, as ridiculous as that sounds, and he might be tempted to take matters into his hands.”
Kim Harrison, The Hollows Insider

Rachel Caine
“I didn't bring you here," he said. "You think you're Miss Special Destiny of the year?"
"No," I shot back, furious. "And I don't damn well want to be - whatever the hell you are. But sometimes there isn't a choice. Right?"
"Careful. You might accidentally make some sense. Ruin your reputation."
"You are infuriating!"
"Yep," he agreed. "It's been said.”
Rachel Caine, Firestorm

C.D. Reiss
“Give me a number between one and ten.”
“Two.”
“Forget that, then. Between five and ten.”
“Seven.”

C.D. Reiss, Resist

“Jonathan Drazen," I said, squeezing his hand. "You're a manipulative bastard, a brazen liar, and a sadist. You've brought me to my knees. You've dominated me. You've told me who I am and then challenged me to be it. If you made me strong enough to stand up to the world, let me stand by you. If you completed the woman I am, let me be that woman in your honor. Every part of my body is dedicated to you. Every note I sing. Every breath in my lungs. My pleasure and pain. Take me. Let me serve you. Let me be yours.”
C.D. Reiss, Sing

C.D. Reiss
“...Tomorrow I'm going to destroy you. I'm going to mark your body and ruin your mind. By noon, you won't know whether to laugh or cry. But tonight? Tonight I will revere you. I will build an altar of myself. I will frame you in stars.”
C.D. Reiss, Sing

Scott Westerfeld
“He squeezed her hand. "Then I'll come get you, wherever you are when it happens. We'll be okay."
"But what about everybody else?"
He stared out across the river, nodding slowly. "My guess is, everybody else is in big trouble.”
Scott Westerfeld, Blue Noon

C.D. Reiss
“I had to have her, and I did. She got on her knees when I told her to. She slipped easily into play and out again, becoming her witty, intelligent self seamlessly. She wasn't intimidated by me. She teased and challenged me. She kissed like she meant it, and from the very first night, she enjoyed fucking without reservation or shame. Monica was, in a word, perfect.”
C.D. Reiss, Control

C.D. Reiss
“Being under him, trapped, objectified, I lost all fear. With Jonathan, I felt safe. I felt a loss of control so complete, a surrender so honest that it became a luxurious indulgence.”
C.D. Reiss, Control

Jordan Castillo Price
“You shot heroin in the bathroom while I was disinfecting the kitchen. Didn’t you?”
“Of course not.” He pulled on his gloves and led the way into the building. “I hatched from a pod and hid the real Jonathan under the floorboards.”
“You’re much less creepy when you’re pensive and focused. Just so you know.”
Jordan Castillo Price, Hemovore

C.D. Reiss

C.D. Reiss, Burn

C.D. Reiss

C.D. Reiss, Control

Jonathan Haidt
“The mind is divided into parts that sometimes conflict. Like a rider on the back of an elephant, the conscious reasoning part of the mind has only limited control of what the elephant does.”
Jonathan Haidt The Happiness Hypothesis Finding Modern Truth in Ancient Wisdom

C.D. Reiss
“God, she was one big nerve ending, that girl, and those big brown eyes got just a little wider when she was close. And those bruises. And how she begged for them.
I knew she was special the night I met her, I just didn't know how special.”
C.D. Reiss, Jessica and Sharon

Cassandra Clare
“La idea de Parabatai viene de una vieja historia, la de Jonathan y David. Y así ocurrió.... que el alma de Jonathan estaba unida con el alma de David, y Jonathan lo amaba con su propia alma... Entonces, Jonathan y David hicieron un pacto, porque lo amaba como su propia alma. Eran dos guerreros, y sus almas estaban unidas por el cielo, de ahí Jonathan Cazador de sombras tuvo la idea de los parabatai, e incluyo la ceremonia en la ley.”
Cassandra Clare

Jason Medina
“Please, be sure to display your stickers, so that I won’t misplace any of you. I lost a few people, while crossing the street, during the last tour. I didn’t think it was a big deal, but apparently, the boss frowns upon that sort of thing.”
Jason Medina, A Ghost In New Orleans
