With a mix of magical realism, humorous and dark satire, and thriller, I have to admit that I rather enjoyed this novel. It took me awhile (75 pages) to ease into the story but once I did, I was hooked and couldn’t put it down. The story is told in second person narration which isn’t my favorite but I later realized that it worked well for this storytelling. It’s full of history about the Sri Lankan government I knew nothing about but told in a satirical way. It’s full of flawed characters especially Maali as he floats along the “in between” were he has seven moons before he can enter the Light....more

The reason I gave this thriller as many stars as I did was because it was a page turner in the first half. This was probably the worst book I’ve read in a long time, in fact I DNF it. Like I said it was good at first, then too many things just didn’t add up. I didn’t mind the first couple paragraphs where she described this gruesome accident just steps from Lowen. Lowen is a struggling writer. She is propositioned by Verity’s husband Jeremy to finish Verity’s series of books. Verity is incapacitated due to an accident but was under contract to finish her series. (I would think they could get out of the contract due to her condition).
Lowen stays in their home in order to do research on Verity’s notes. She discovers a manuscript in which Verity describes her obsession with her husband and gets very graphic with their sexcapades, which was quite pornographic. Just over the top, in my opinion. This book contains child abuse that I just couldn’t stomach. These characters just didn’t appeal to me at all.
But I still kept reading. Then what I thought would happen, happened. That’s when I stopped reading. Whatever the outcome of this story was, I truly didn’t care. I learned from spoiler reviews the outcome, which was one of my theories. This confirmed to me that I made the right call in not finishing.
I do love dark and twisty thrillers and I know that my opinion is unpopular as most readers love this thriller. I guess it’s just not my taste. I’m learning that the more a writer goes for shock value, the more I dislike it. I did enjoy This Ends With Us though....more

The sisters enter a Food Wars competition to see once and for all which Chicken restaurant is the best, with a prize of a hundred thousand dollars to the winner. There are deeper issues going on within the families, which get aired out on National television but seems there was a rather rushed conclusion. This was just okay for me....more

I listened to the audible version because it’s narrated my Matthew himself. He eloquently shares his life lessons, thoughts and philosophies in a light hearted and humorous way. I’m glad to finally learn the real story about his naked bongo playing and his arrest. He seems to enjoy being naked quite often. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. Greenlights refer to the positive aspects of his life, and how approvals, successes, support, fresh starts all count as GREENLIGHTS. One of my favorite quotes, which he describes as bumper stickers is “It’s not a risk until you can lose the fight.” I loved the flow and tone of this book. I wonder if some of it is exaggerated but he tells a wonderful story....more

Evelyn made it to movie stardom at a very young age and relied on her beauty and envious body to get what she wanted. She tells her life story to journalist Monique, who Evelyn specifically chose to write her memoir. We also get the story of Monique. This is a story about the true love of her life which was kept secret to prevent scandal, and the people in her life that kept her secret. As you get to know her, she’s actually not a good person but still quite intriguing. Evelyn portrays her story- the good, bad and ugly in such great detail with honesty and tells of the sacrifices she’s made. It’s also heartbreaking at times. Reed did such a good job with her research and ties everything up in the end with a nice bow for us....more

The Bachman tackles serious subjects of depression and suicide in this novel. Yet he does so in a lighthearted and humorous way, which somehow works. The eight strangers that are brought together in a hostage situation at an apartment open house are as flawed as they come. There are some really nice surprises surrounding these characters and the two officers as they reveal their anxieties. This book is funny, clever, and very heartwarming. And the ending might even bring a tear or two. So well written!...more

The Authenticity Project refers to the notebook which Julian, an almost 80 year old lonely and eccentric artist writes about his life pondering whether we’re really honest with ourselves. He leaves the notebook in a cafe owned by Monica who reads it and empathizes with Julian’s story. This is told in third person narration from the perspective of the wonderful cast of characters that also find the book and add to it their stories. Monica admits to looking for love, Hazard is a drug addict wrestling with his demons, Riley is a kind and sweet Aussie man, and Alice the insta influencer is in a not so perfect marriage. All are brought together as a result of this notebook and create a friendship. I loved how each character comes alive and get entangled in each other’s imperfect lives, revealing some secrets along the way. It’s told with humor and is very thought provoking....more
