Verity has sworn off private investigating, but when a friends desperation forces her back into sleuthing...she uncovers eye opening insights and gains a handsome partner in the process.
Nathaniel is a dashing bow street runner with a reputation for chivalry...will his wicked good looks and charm be what Verity needs to push herself to greater possibility within a man's realm?
Joanna Barker is an author who never misses for me in this genre and always produces solid romances and plotlines. So True A Love excels in so many things. I loved all the side plot elements and characters that pushed boundaries and expectations within this genre (spoilers redacted), and really always love when a women excels in a mans sphere of work...especially in a historical setting.
Verity is a woman before her time and Nathaniel is a man who raises her upon a pedestal and never diminishes her shine. I loved the parts where they worked together in tandem. Their sweet chemistry stole the show making this read an easy binge. There might be an inn scene that lives rent free in my mind.
ALL IN ALL SO LOVELY. The perfect mysterious read to segue into fall with. Don't miss it!...more

The Thirteenth Child is twisted story based on Godfather Death. Hazel has been unwanted by her parents since her birth. As a thirteenth child she has been promised to a god...forever waiting for him to come collect her and bring her into a new life and out of her misery.
Hazel is a unique heroine and it wasn't hard for me to quickly fall in love with her. You feel for her as her tumultuous childhood leaves her feeling powerless, unwanted and unloved. When she is given the power to heal and to also see imminent death she grapples with her power and how to respond to it.
Hazels journey is full of ups and downs, tragedy and heart break and she has to make unspeakable and harrowing decisions for one so young. My heart hurt for her but also I just genuinely enjoyed her journey of self confidence and resilience even when she felt so alone.
Her relationships with others are what really shine in this story. The relationships with her Godfather death was very moving and poignant at times as she comes to know more of who she wants to be and speaks her mind. I loved the dialogue and power in their interactions that were some of my favorite in the book.
The romance element was also unique and unexpected. I really loved how mature it felt and how the sweetness of it bloomed into something really full of longevity and permanence. It did not feel cookie cutter and ultimately stole my heart especially in the latter half of the book.
This is a longer story but I really enjoyed the atmosphere, the writing and the characters. The audio was incredibly well done and recommended. The last few chapters left me misty eyed and this is easily my new favorite from this author.
*I cannot remember an excess of language...one dream sequence was more lusty and vivid which felt out of place in the story but it was brief and can be easily skipped....more
