En cuanto a los personajes, hay varios y muy interesantes. Como Elmore, que tiene más de ochenta años y que su madre transforma en un bebé cada vez que crece demasiado. Y de fondo, un asesino en serie.

Se trata de cuentos mezcla de literatura fantástica y terror sobrenatural, estando algunos de ellos muy cercanos al relato costumbrista y alegórico. Lo que une a todos estos relatos es un ser misterioso cuya naturaleza vamos aprehendiendo con la lectura de cada historia. Los cuentos están bien hilvanados y contribuyen a que el lector juegue a encajar las piezas. La calidad de los nueve relatos incluidos es menor de la esperada, aunque tres de ellos son bastante buenos. ‘Roger: El Poder’ transcurre en un entorno fantástico y postapocalíptico con un gran final. Para mí, lo mejor del libro. ‘Luis: El Comienzo de la Partida’, comienza como un cuento costumbrista, para ir convirtiéndose en una historia sobrenatural de brillante desarrollo. ‘Matías: El Ángel de la Guarda’, de nuevo parece un relato costumbrista, pero que nos encamina hacia algo de corte fantástico, con sorpresa final.
Para ser el primer libro publicado por J.E. Álamo en papel, la calidad de la obra es buena sin ser brillante. La novela se lee en un suspiro y mantiene el interés, que no es poco, y deja entrever en lo que podría convertirse este escritor de darle una oportunidad. Aunque bien es cierto que 'El Hombre Ilustrado' no tiene la cohesión de 'Crónicas Marcianas' ni alcanza los niveles de calidad de ésta.
El libro empieza a raíz del encuentro de un personaje con el Hombre Ilustrado, una especie de fenómeno de feria que tiene todo su cuerpo tatuado; pero se trata de tatuajes muy especiales, ya que cada dibujo refiere una historia del futuro. A pesar de que el Hombre Ilustrado avisa reiteradamente a este personaje del peligro que conlleva estar a su lado, decide acampar con él. Y es que está fascinado con las ilustraciones que decoran su piel. A partir de aquí se van desplegando cada uno de los dieciocho relatos, cada uno de ellos asociado a una ilustración distinta.
Todos los cuentos contienen esa poesía inherente a las historias de Bradbury, en los que impera el carácter literario y de fábula más que el científico. Bradbury nunca se ha preocupado de la parte científica de sus libros, algo que le han achacado algunos de sus colegas en múltiples ocasiones. Pero a él no le preocupan detalles del tipo de si la luna sale por tal o cual lado, a él lo que le importa es contar historias.
En 'El Hombre Ilustrado' se dan la mano diversos géneros, fantásticos, ciencia ficción y terror. Entre los que más me han gustado se encuentran 'Caleidoscopio', que cuenta la caída de varios astronautas hacia la atmósfera. 'Los desterrados', homenaje a los grandes maestros de lo sobrenatural, que narra lo que les sucede cuando sus libros son destruidos. 'El zorro y el bosque', donde es posible viajar al pasado para huir de la guerras del futuro. 'Marionetas S.A.', cuento que narra la posibilidad de hacer una copia de ti mismo para salir de ciertos apuros. 'La hora cero', relato inquietante donde los niños de la Tierra son utilizados para invadirnos. 'El cohete', donde priman los sueños por encima de cualquier cosa, en donde el protagonista le hace a su familia un regalo fabuloso. Pero realmente todos los cuentos tienen algo memorable. Si bien es cierto que algunos de los relatos son capaces de suscitar imágenes sugerentes e imaginativas, también es verdad que las historias son algo confusas. 'Magnífica Víbora de las Formas' es una recopilación de relatos ya publicados en revistas y fanzines, con una estructura interna que los relaciona. Pero el libro no funciona como debiera, a modo de otros fix-up que sí lo hacen, como puedan ser 'Ciudad', de Simak, o 'Crónicas Marcianas', de Bradbury. Los cuentos de Fernández Madrigal se hacen confusos aun con el apoyo que crea su conjunto. Como digo, hay historias en las que logras entrar, y entonces sí disfrutas de la originalidad del autor. Por otra parte, otros relatos parecen la simiente de algo "más grande" y no logran cuajar.
La antología está dividida en tres partes, precedidas de un preludio. Este es muy extraño y brutal, como su protagonista, y te deja con ganas de saber más sobre la enigmática Emperatriz que vive en una catedral en la Edad Media, y que posee extraños poderes. En las siguientes partes se nos narra la creación de inteligencias artificiales y robots, de su ascenso y caída, y de la aparición de las Víboras de las Formas. A mi entender, lo mejor del libro son las ideas sobre la Telaraña que protege a la Tierra de ataques externos, así como la fusión de robot con humano, y la historia de Alexei, capaz de oler bolsas de petróleo en un mundo devastado.

Entré en conocimiento de César Mallorquí hace años, a través de su relato ‘El coleccionista de sellos’, quizá uno de los mejores relatos incluidos en Entré en conocimiento de César Mallorquí hace años, a través de su relato ‘El coleccionista de sellos’, quizá uno de los mejores relatos incluidos en los recopilatorios de los Premios UPC. ’El Círculo de Jericó’ es uno de esos libros que tenía pendientes desde hace años. Cuando me decidía a leerlo, siempre lo dejaba para otro momento porque había libros que me apetecía más leer. Así que me dije, de esta no pasa. Y la verdad es que ha sido una grata sorpresa.
’El Círculo de Jericó’ está presentado como un fix-up, y se trata de siete relatos escritos anteriormente por César Mallorquí, a los que el autor ha dado cierta unidad a través de un octavo relato: Durante una excursión a Santa Maragarida, un volcán extinguido en La Garrotxa, una familia se encuentra con un extraño grupo de personas, que se hacen llamar El Círculo de Jericó. Una tormenta les obligará a refugiarse en una casa cercana, donde este extraño grupo explicará que se dedica a contar historias.
César Mallorquí es un buen narrador, resulta original y efectivo sin necesidad de hacer uso de un lenguaje ampuloso y rebuscado. Su estilo es engañosamente sencillo, y mantiene el ritmo y la atención del lector a través de sus interesantes y amenos argumentos, que si bien están englobados bajo el término ciencia ficción, estarían más cercanos a la literatura fantástica.

El escritor, la muerte y el diablo. (****) Un escritor que ansía la fama por encima de todo, será capaz de cualquier cosa por adquirirla. Una nueva revisión del mito de Fausto, escrito en clave de humor. Buen relato.
El rebaño. (*****) En un futuro postapocalíptico, un perro pastor continúa cuidando de sus ovejas. Mientras, un satélite artificial surca el cielo. Ternura y filosofía, en una historia que recuerda al mejor Ray Bradbury. El mejor relato del libro.
El mensaje perdido. (**) Un extraño mensaje extraterrestre colisiona por error con la Tierra. El relato más flojo de la novela.
La pared de hielo. (*****) Una multinacional de bioingeniería lleva a cabo un proyecto secreto capaz de alterar la mente de las personas. El otro gran relato del libro, pura ciencia ficción especulativa.
Materia oscura. (****) A través del diario de un antropólogo, sabremos del secreto de una tribu amazónica de la que no se tenia constancia. Un buen y divertido relato.
El hombre dormido. (***) En una clínica se están estudiando una atípicas ondas mentales producidas durante el sueño que pueden llevar a extraordinarios descubrimientos. Interesante mezcla de religión y ciencia ficción.
La casa del doctor Pétalo. (****) El doctor Pétalo, que vive en una extraña mansión, se dedica a coleccionar arquitecturas, y esta vez está interesado en la casa de Sara. Muy buen relato largo o novela corta, que revisita el clásico de la Bella y la Bestia.
En resumen, se trata de una novela que hace reflexionar y divierte a partes iguales, escrita por una autor que sabe lo que se hace. ...more
