En ningún momento se explica qué sucedió, pero a lo largo de la trama los personajes se tropiezan con viejas carreteras y vehículos abandonados. Por tanto, estamos más bien ante un western al uso que ante una novela de ciencia ficción.
Seph es un joven pistolero que lleva años viajando solo con Cade, su querido caballo, su único amigo. Esto es así desde que dispararon a su padre delante de él. Su obsesión es ver algún día el océano. Por otra parte, tenemos a Avery, una chica que vive con Finn, su hermano gemelo, al que los agentes de la ley de este nuevo mundo quieren alistar a la fuerza, lo que provocará un enfrentamiento y la huida desesperada de Avery. Cómo no, las vidas de Seph y Avery se cruzarán.

Es divertido cuando se utilizan cálculos para disparar y reglas como cuchillos, por ejemplo. La idea es interesante.
En esta novela corta, nos encontramos con la profesora Malago Browne, que tras el robo al tren del oro del Capitolio vive bajo el nombre de Sra. Grey. Hasta que unas mujeres vienen a solicitar su ayuda con unos maleantes que les hacen la vida imposible en su pequeño pueblo. Así que la profesora tiene que reunir de nuevo a su pandilla de profesores y físicos. Como se puede observar, estamos ante el enésimo homenaje a Los siete magníficos.
Si bien el primer libro estaba muy bien, era muy entretenido y ameno, no sólo por la novedad sino por el ritmo y los sucesos, este segundo se queda bastante más atrás en todos los sentidos. Es algo insulso y está escrito como a desgana. En mi opinión. Una pena. ...more

Me gusta bastante este subgénero del fantástico, que se ha dado en llamar weird western. Eso de mezclar los monstruos clásicos con pistolas, vaqueros y demás, e incluso viajes en el tiempo, suele ser siempre un acierto. En esta recopilación hay algunos monstruos, como el Wendigo, vampiros y espectros, pero también hay maldad humana pura y dura, y precisamente estos son los relatos que menos me han gustado. Cuando me enfrento a este tipo de relatos, quiero ficción y sorpresas, crossovers con criaturas fantásticas o literarias, porque el resto se aleja un tanto de este tipo de literatura, o al menos, no debería etiquetarse como weird. ...more

Así que tenemos a Slade buscando hacerse con lo que le pertenece por apellido, que son las tierras de su padre, que a su vez se entera que posiblemente fue asesinado, y además tenemos “algo” que asesina salvajemente a los habitantes del pueblo.

Personalmente, me parece una distopía ambientada en un mundo postapocalíptico, en el que las mujeres que no actúan como tal, son literalmente exterminadas. Es decir, que si dos mujeres se quieren, tienen que guardarlo en secreto, ya que les va la vida en ello. Y aquí es donde nos encontramos a nuestra protagonista, Esther, que se mete de polizona en un carromato de bibliotecarias, tras lo acontecido en su hogar, algo trágico que nos contará a posteriori. Hay tiroteos, y conversaciones interesantes. También hay que añadir que es una novela corta, y que todo apunta a una ampliación del universo creado por la autora. Estamos ante una de las novelas cortas más originales que he leído últimamente. Se trata de un weird western francamente bien escrito. Nos encontramos en unos Estados Unidos alternativos, donde los números, las matemáticas, pero sobre todo los matemáticos y personas dedicadas a trabajos afines, es decir, banqueros, contables, etc., están perseguidos a muerte. Y la más buscada es la profesora Browne, considerada una matemágica muy peligrosa. Esta suele viajar junto a Ferm, los dos a caballo y huyendo o pasando desapercibidos constantemente. El porqué de esta persecución a los matemáticos no llega a explicarse excesivamente, pero peligrosos sí que lo son, ya que son capaces de realizar cálculos de trayectorias de balas en décimas de segundo, buscando el tiro perfecto, el rebote imposible. Y claro, esto supone una amenaza.
A este par de desesperados se les encomienda una misión, referente a un tren y un dinero, que tendrá que descubrir el lector. Una lectura muy recomendable, que te deja con un continuará para morderse las uñas. ...more

El joven Owen también tendrá sus propias aventuras, en las que se verá implicada una chica del lugar, Lenna Barros.
Hadas, demonios-araña, sirenas malignas y demás monstruos, se cruzarán en el camino de los pistoleros. La novela corta está bien escrita y entretiene. Me ha gustado más que la primera. Pero quizás encuentro que al protagonista le dan demasiados palos de más. No quiero un superman como protagonista, está bien que tenga debilidades, pero son unas cuantas veces que se queda fuera de juego y ha de recuperar terreno. Es una opinión personal, la historia es entretenida, y espero más episodios. ...more

Cassidy es trasladado a una misión donde los frailes franciscanos hacen lo que pueden con él, aunque sus heridas son mortales de necesidad. Sin embargo, Doña Lupe, una india navajo, utiliza sus propios métodos para traerlo de vuelta a la vida. Sufre el dolor de sus heridas, pero estas se curan rápidamente. Es entonces cuando empezará su venganza. ...more

En una sabemos del joven Daryl, halla una antigua caja de su abuelo con fotos, libros y demás. Después sabremos del abuelo de Daryl en su juventud, perteneciente a las tropas de la West Fargo y los erün en su lucha y victoria contra del Velo Negro. Toda esta parte es apasionante, donde se van desvelando secretos oscuros, arcanos, que a su vez hacen que la historia actual de Daryl suba en emoción. Muy buen relato largo, mezcla de steampunk y western, más cercano al weird west. Como dije en el anterior relato, ¡quiero más!
Cada vez admiro más a estos escritores de llamado neo-pulp. En mi opinión, se merecerían que se hablase más de ellos en los medios, y más por parte del tan "manido" fandom. Somos pocos, pero fieles. Se nota el placer, cariño y gusto por lo que hacen, y además lo transmiten. Como les he oído en más de una ocasión, escriben las historias que les gustaría leer. Y a fe mía que lo consiguen....more
