I read Odell's previous book, How to do Nothing and had to stop halfway because it wasn't really resonating with me, but this one was the exact opposite. It had lots of historical context about the concept of time and how it's tied to capitalism and oppression. At first, I wasn't a fan of the framing of the book, but I grew to like it and loved how it tied the different chapters together....more

Not only did her mother do a number on her, but so many adults failed her when they should have been helping her. The book is an honest, brutal recollection of what she went through as a child actor.
I just don't understand the hype for this book. Maybe because it's a celebrity memoir, so there's definitely a market for that. I guess maybe I'm just not the right audience because I only have a passing familiarity with iCarly. Despite that, the book was worth finishing. It helped that I listened to this on audiobook and McCurdy read it....more

I rarely listen to audiobooks, but I am here to tell you that this was fantastic in audiobook format. The narrators, Amber and Lacey Ruffin are so funny and because they're saying words that they wrote themselves, it almost sounds like a podcast. The only parts I was missing out on were the pictures, but Amber's descriptions of the pictures are almost as good.
This book strikes a good balance between talking about racism and not having it be super heavy. A good deal of the stories happen in Omaha, Nebraska and I have to say this is about as much as I've heard of Omaha than I ever had in my life prior to listening to the book. I didn't realize it was such a large city.
The stories are indeed crazy, which is kind of sad because as the authors say, the stories in the book are only a fraction of the racist things that happened to Lacey, so I could only imagine what was left out.
Side note: I wouldn't say this was entirely kid-appropriate, but my 8-year old also really liked listening to this. I skipped some of the chapters that were too mature for her and I don't mind her listening to profanity, so take that as you will....more
