She was the[image] ARC provided by Keymaster Press in exchange for an honest review. 1.) The Alchemists of Loom ★★★★ “She was Arianna the Rivet. She was the White Wraith. And she would not scream.” I devoured this book in one day and one night. It was so whimsical and fantastic, but kept true to its steampunk roots. This book even surpasses The Alchemists of Loom tremendously, and you guys know I loved that. Like, this series is so under-hyped, but is so outstanding. It's unique, so very creative, beautifully written, completely captivating, and so very addicting. If you guys are looking for a different kind of fantasy that sits right between YA and NA, please give this a shot. It for sure is mature YA, because this book does have sexy time, but it's not explicit or anything like that, but it is important to mention if that's something you're not comfortable with. But also don't go into this expecting A Court of Mist and Fury's sex scenes, but go into this knowing that it is an older YA book with mature themes that are amazingly written. “But desire and love and forever were all separate mistresses.” Book one, The Alchemists of Loom, mostly centers on the world of Loom and seeing how the people are pretty much slaves to the Dragons on Nova. Well, in this book we spend most of our time on Nova and we are able to see how many of the Dragons are not happy with the current ruler. It truly is desperate times for one Dragon house, and our main character, Ari, from Loom might be the only answer to save them. So, this is book two in a series, but I will do my best to give a little summary, and a big breakdown, that doesn't give away too much, but still gives you a feel for this amazing world. This world that Elise Kova has built is so very intricate, detailed, and has some of the best world-building I've ever read in my life. Honestly, she amazes me and I'm not sure how she has done it, but at this point I'd read anything and everything by her. There are Two Worlds, Separated by Clouds: ➽ Loom - The main setting of The Alchemists of Loom, and is home to Fenthri and Chimeras and their five guilds. ➽ Nova: The main setting of this book (we do get one amazing perspective on Loom in this book) and the Dragon homeland that is inhabited by three Dragon Houses. There are Three Main Characters: ➽ Florence - Young Fenthri, whose story-line showcases what's going on in the heart of the guilds. And she's a lesbian! ➽ Arianna/Ari - The main character, who is made up of nothing short of magic. She's strong, she's feared, she's openly bisexual, and she's amazing. ➽ Cvareh - A Dragon in House Xin, who is trying to change the Dragon's hierarchy, while also owing Ari a boon of her choosing! There are Three Races: ➽ Fenthri - Grey, black, white, the weakest of the three races, and have tattoos on their face depicting what guild they belong to. ➽ Dragon - A vast array of colors, very primal, can regrow most things from their bodies, have magical abilities, enslaved Loom and sees Fenthri as servants. ➽ Chimera - Fenthri with Dragon blood and/or organs. They are made by Alchemists, and are very strong. The Three Dragon Houses: ➽ Rok - Red Dragons! Strongest house, and the Dragon King's House. ➽ Tam - Green Dragons! Second strongest house, and very aligned with House Rok. ➽ Xin - Blue Dragons! Weakest house. The Five Guilds of Loom: ➽ Alchemists - Developed Chimeras, and the only guild to not be under the Dragon King's thumb. ➽ Rivets - Specializes in refining processes in steel mines and applications for gold. ➽ Revolvers - Explores all the uses for guns and explosives! ➽ Harvesters - Supplies all the bare materials to all the other guilds. ➽ Ravens - Moves people and goods all around Loom. The Fenthri population is completely controlled on Loom, and these five guilds are something that is forced onto you at birth, without choice. It doesn't matter that you'd be better fit as an Alchemist, if you are chosen to be a Raven. You are given two tests, which you must pass or you will die, then you are branded with a face tattoo according with the guild are you in, and then you will work in alignment with the rest of the guilds granting the Dragons of Nova's demands. This sparks an amazing discussion about who we are forced to be and who we truly are when we are able to accept ourselves for who we are. Florence, a Fenthri who is Ari's assistant, and who has completely won over my heart, has struggled with this her entire life. Her points of view were so amazing and so heartwarming and watching her grow and accept is one of the most beautiful storylines I've ever been blessed enough to read. “Her value extended far beyond the marking on her cheek.” There is also another very important discussion on how we see certain races as superior and how we build stereotypes and prejudices off of it. Not to get too political here, but this is a pretty close to home parallel for me, and I'd support any book that makes people think twice about judging others off their skin color or other physical characteristics that are unlike their own. The other “She bent before no man, woman, king, or queen—and most certainly no Dragon.” This book has everything: political intrigue, romance, death duels, betrayals, gunslinging, technology, magic, and freakin' dragons! Like I said, it is for sure mature YA, with darker themes and some sexual content, but I feel like this is truly a unique gift to the YA genre. Book three, The Rebels of Gold, comes out in December of this year and I cannot wait to get my hands on it. “For Loom, there is nothing she wouldn’t do.” Blog | Twitter | Tumblr | Instagram | Youtube | Twitch The quotes above were taken from an ARC and are subject to change upon publication. ...more |

The Bird and the Sword ★★★★ “I fell in love with you in pieces. Layer by layer, day by day, inch by inch.” I loved The Bird and the Sword so much when I read it, so I was looking so forward to the indirect sequel, the Queen and the Cure. But, sadly, I was so let down by this next installment. I didn’t care about the character, the story, or any of the hardships that they were going through. Honestly? The only parts I really liked where when the characters from The Bird and the Sword made brief cameos. Kjell is the captain of Tiras‘s guard, and is on a mission to find any remaining Volgar. Not only is Kjell a strong warrior and leader, he is also a very gifted healer. But his healing comes at a price; for every life he saves, he gives up a day of his own life. But he stumbles upon a young woman named Sasha who is in desperate need of healing, and he doesn’t even hesitate to save her life. Sasha appears to be a slave, and as compensation for saving her life, Kjell agrees to let her come on this mission with him and his men. But this is obviously a romance book, so angst ensues! Especially since people in the story might not know the extent of their pasts that others have tried to keep hidden. But the actions that Kjell and Sasha make throughout this story are just infuriating. They really wanted to make things so much harder on themselves, and not in the good angsty way, but in the annoying and unbelievable way. And this happened over and over, constantly, throughout the entire story and it really made it hard to enjoy and even read. And how this book had to end? Lord, the payoff didn’t even feel good. Overall, I am so sad that this ended up being a disappointment. Hell, maybe I just overhyped it for myself. I’m always on the lookout for fantasy romances, and I put so much damn faith in this, especially after loving The Bird and the Sword so much. The Well of Ascension ★★★ 3.) The Hero of Ages ★★★★ 3.5) Secret History ★★★★★ "Huh [...] tea's poisoned." Oh, I loved finally experiencing this next era of the mistborn world, especially in a city called Elendale (be still, my heart)! Yet, I was not expecting this book to start out with a very tragic murder plotline where the bodies are arranged in a very specific pose, and for the actual story to be taking place five years later where Wax is very much still grieving that night. And when the kidnappings start happening again, especially when these people being kidnapped are from mistborn family lines. I also really love how mistborns are no longer a thing in this new day and age! At most people can have one alomatic ability and one feruchemic ability (twinborns)! And our main characters have some really cool and fun powers with these two abilities: ➽ Wax – pushes steel & can grow heavier and lighter ➽ Wayne – Can alter time & heals quickly (can also make great disguises, but unrelated to metals and powers!) Overall, I really enjoyed this first installment in a very beloved universe! And I can’t wait to continue on! Also, I will forever be the biggest fangirl of a certain brother who is destined to continue his brother’s work. Okay, brb, crying. The Bird and the Sword had such an unexpectedly beautiful prose, with such lyrical writing. I was completely swept away by how whimsically this tale was told. Amy Harmon has such talent, and I went into this expecting nothing, but I ending up being blown away by this fantasy novel. Seriously, this is not hyped nearly enough. Also, on a completely personal side note, this book's main protagonist has an abbreviated version of my favorite name of all time, Larkin. So, besides the enthralling writing, I was completely fangirling over the use of the name Lark, too, because I've never read a story using it before. Okay, so this book starts out with Lark being very young and still learning the dangers of her magical gift. In this world, Gifted people are sentenced to death, so it is very imperative to hide your magical powers if you are born with any. The Four Types of Gifted Magic: ➽ Spinners - Have the ability to turn things into other things. ➽ Changers- Can shape shift into other animals. ➽ Healers - Are able to heal bodies and cure wounds. ➽ Tellers - Use magic words that compel people and things to do things. This magic is very much like casting spells, and very powerful. “My mother made words. She was a Teller, and her words were magic. She spoke and the words became life. Reality. Truth. My father knew it, and he was afraid. Words can be terrible when the truth is unwelcome.” Lark is a Teller like her mother, and her mother pays the ultimate price for her carelessness to hide her powers. Her mother is killed by the King of Jeru, but not before she tells the King, Lark's father, and Lark herself, a few prophetic things. Her mother's premonition-like rhymes also makes Lark lose her ability to speak. We are then thrust into the future, where our dear Lark is still unable to communicate besides head nods. She does have an amazing Troll companion named Boojohni that I completely fell in love with. They sort of form their own way to speak, and he has become Lark's only friend over the years. Then one day, while out in the forest, Lark stumbles upon a fatally injured bird. Even though she only has the voice inside in head, she tries to use her Teller powers to compel the bird's body into healing itself. The next thing she knows, she is waking up in the forest and then is running home because the new King is arriving to meet with her father. Lark's father, Corvyn, is a Lord and hasn't sent any men to help fight against the Volgar. The Volgar are winged evil monsters that are lead by the Volgar Liege. Their numbers are constantly growing, and they are taking over more and more land. The new King, Tiras, son of the old King that killed Lark's mother, captures Lark and plans to use her as hostage. Tiras tells Corvyn that he can have his daughter back, once he sends his share of men to help defeat the Volgar. And the story quickly, and very addictively, starts from there. “Suddenly yearning had a flavor. It tasted like a king, a beautiful, frightening, infuriating man who flew into my life and began to free my words.” The characters are so very wonderful, and Lark is such a strong female character that learns her worth and won't settle for less than what she deserves. The story is fast paced and full of intrigue and mystery, while proving over and over that words are the most powerful weapon we will ever truly wield. The magic system is easy to understand, but still really enchanting. The romance in this book is seriously top notch, and if you guys are anything like me and some of your favorite parts of A Court of Mist and Fury were the ones where Feyre is taught to read, then you are going to freakin' love some of the scenes in this book. Seriously, be still, my heart, because I'm still not over how heartwarming and perfect those scenes were. “I have loved you every moment of every day, and I will love you until I cease to be.” The Bird and the Sword is the perfect mix of fantasy and romance. If you are like me, and enjoy both of those genres, then you have to pick this book up. I loved this and I absolutely cannot wait to read The Queen and the Cure. ARC provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. It is no secret that I am obsessed and in love with everything that this ARC provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. It is no secret that I am obsessed and in love with everything that this writing duo creates. IA is truly a tier about all urban fantasy, and I recommend any and everything by them if you love the genre or are just getting into it. IA is maybe the only author(s) that I can say whole heartedly that I love everything they've created, not like, not think is okay or worth reading, LOVE. Not only do you receive the first three volumes of this series in this bind up, it is also filled with jaw dropping gorgeous artwork by Doris Mantair. The art that was in these novels were also something that I looked forward to, but seeing them in full, and completely perfected, was amazing. You can preorder this gorgeous bind up of all three novels in the Innkeeper Chronicles here for a limited time! And if $75 is a little steep for you (and for me, let's be real), this series started out as something IA posted serialized on their website. I'm not entirely sure if you can see find these books for free online, but they are about $13 each on Amazon, and so very worth reading. Also, go request this on Netgalley while it is still available! Seriously, you get some breathtaking art work and three of the best PNR/UF books, by the very best PNR/UF writer(s), on the market! If I hadn't already read this series, it would have been the best approval Netgalley has ever given me. I'm going to break down each novel with their individual reviews and ratings, and also with links to their individual reviews on Goodreads. Again, I loved this series, this world, and these characters. Each book just gets better and better, and I hope and pray they continue on with this series until the end of time. ➽ 1.) Clean Sweep ★★★★ I loved this new world and expected nothing less from this amazing writing duo. I was not expecting all the sci-fi developments, so that took me for by a very pleasant surprise. The concepts in this book were so unique; I've never read anything about "Innkeepers" before. I wouldn't be surprised if it was a completely new concept they created. Basically, if you're looking for a good PNR/sci-fi love child, I can't recommend this enough. So what's the deal with this innkeeper and her inn? Well, first off the inn is a sentient being that gives immense powers to the Innkeeper when they are on its property, and even some powers when off of it. Just like inns in our world, people check in to stay for however long periods of time and the innkeeper will see to their needs. In this world, travelers come from all over the universe and have some pretty peculiar wants and needs. Our main character and innkeeper, Dina, came into the profession because her parents were also innkeepers so she grew up with it and loved the lifestyle. Unfortunately, her parents and their whole inn disappeared, so she's now made it her life mission to find them. But what would an inn be without guests? We have a sexy neighborhood werewolf that doesn't know how powerful he really is. We also have a vampire full aware of his power, who is a warrior that is pretty swoon-worthy. Yes, that combination does equal a love triangle. Then my personal favorite, a cannibal alien that's on the run, with a strange appetite for Mellow Yellow and Funyuns. Then we throw in a very dangerous alien called a dahaka with his stalker beasts at his side, and we have a full paranormal/sci-fi cast. I'll be honest, I didn't love this book as much as I did the rest of the Kate Daniels series, but it was still a good read. It just wasn't un-put-down-able like how I find Kate Daniels. It still has the super witty writing that makes you laugh out loud and feel silly giggling to yourself. It still portrays Dina as a strong independent woman character that more girls would strive to be like. Most important, it still had an engaging story that makes for a wonderful read. This book might not be five stars, but it was still one of the better books I've read in 2015. “I have spent my spare time studying literature popular with young women of this planet. One should always study the battlefield." [image] ➽ 2.) Sweep in Peace ★★★★ Apparently, Jack, George, Gaston, and Lark/Sophie are all from IA's other series The Edge. I haven't read this series yet, but going off my friend's reviews this is either going to make you very happy or completely turn you off of this book! I am kind of scared to read it, but I loved Sweep in Peace so maybe I'll dive in one day when my stacks of "to reads" isn't touching my bedroom ceiling. Oh, and I also think you will be able to read this for free on IA's website, but I don't think all the chapters are up yet. Or maybe they took it down for the actual book release? Either way, I think you will eventually be able to read it for free, which is pretty neat. Ilona Andrews has a gift that most authors do not have; every book they write makes me want to be a part of that world. I remember being so young while reading Harry Potter, and I felt the same magic after I finished every book. That crazy longing to want to live in that world, and be a part of that story. Maybe I'm just crazy, but that's what Ilona does for me that most other authors will never be able to achieve, and for that they will get my never ending applause. Hell, Kate Daniels is post-apocalyptic and I still want to live in that world! Seriously, my fan-girling has made me sick, but I'm too far gone for any cure. Sweep in Peace starts right up from where Clean Sweep left off. Honestly, you could probably just jump in and read this one; you just might not appreciate it (or Sean) as much, but this book does a wonderful job filling in the blanks without making the reader feel overwhelmed with information. Dina and Gertrude Hunt are still the same, while Caldenia is still the Inn's only guest. Well, that soon changes when Dina accepts to host The Summit for three factions who are at war over a planet. The planet, Nexus, contains large subterranean reserves of Kuyo, which is a liquid used in production of "pharmaceutical asset of significant strategic value". So it's very valuable and everyone is fighting over it. The Three Factions: 1.) The merchants of Baha-char represented by Nuan Cee's clan (cute little fox people). (view spoiler)[You'll realize they are fighting for much more than just the Kuyo. (hide spoiler)] 2.) The hope-crushing Horde represented by Otrokar (aliens that form their bodies for their jobs). 3.) The Holy Anocracy represented by House Krahr (vampires). (view spoiler)[Oh yes, this means Arland *swoon*. (hide spoiler)] So needless to say, Dina's Inn is very full in this book. So she has to hire a chef to cook for all these people while she is constantly making sure Gertrude Hunt stay neutral and safe for all the new guests. The chef she hires ends up being my favorite character. Basically, he's an exiled giant porcupine, who's a former Red Cleaver chef, who is obsessed with mangoes and named Orro. I'm not really sure I have to say much more than that, but I can promise you if you read this book you, too, will fall in love with him! This book is filled with Dina trying to keep the peace in her inn, while also trying to get all three factions to sign a peace treaty with one another. Obviously, it's no small task and has Dina constantly working with these very different clans. Some major twists and turns happen, which leaves the reader on the edge of their seat while trying to figure out all the mysteries. Overall, I loved this installment and cannot wait for the third. Please, oh please give us Klaus in the next one. Dina needs him, and I sure as hell need to know more about him. The epilogue will probably leave you wanting more Sean, even though all I want is more Arland. [image] “I asked him if he was leaving anyone behind. He said he met a girl with stardust on her robe, and when he looked into her eyes, he saw the Universe looking back.” ➽ 3.) One Fell Sweep ★★★★★ Everything IA touches turns to gold, and this series is no exception. The Innkeeper Chronicles feel so cozy, yet are so action packed and have so much swoon-worthy romance. IA somehow weaves a story with the perfect balance of mystery, filled with high-tense situations, with all these unique concepts, and makes it feel like home. I can't recommend this series, or this writing duo, enough. This series is written in weekly installments that IA posts for free. I, being the masochist that I truly am, always wait until it is actually published in book form to review, but it is still pretty freakin' awesome that this is a series that they write for their fans out of the kindness of their hearts. Without giving too much away, and because we are three books into this series now, the first book in this series, Clean Sweep, stars a innkeeper, Dina, who runs a magical inn that allows life forms from all over the Galaxy to stay for whatever period of time they need. Not everyone has the magical gifts to be able to run their own inn, but Dina's parents owned their own inn while she was growing up, so she is very familiar with this magical safe place that is hidden away from the rest of Earth. Innkeepers also have immense power, especially on their inn's property. On top of being able to command the house at your every whim, because you have to be able to make your guests comfortable, which means constantly changing the rooms and layout to their needs, innkeepers have the responsibility to keep their guests safe, and have a whole magical property at their disposal. Yet, an inn's ability to thrive and live is constantly syncing with the guests that are needed for it to house. In the first book, The Innkeeper Chronicles, this is very apparent, but now that we are three books in, the inn is prospering, thriving, and very powerful. Each book deals with a new threat to the inn, or its guests, but the constant theme of the whole series is that Dina's once innkeeper parents have gone missing. Dina keeps a picture of them on display right when you walk into her inn, no matter how the layout of the inn changes, in hopes that someone will recognize them and be able to give her information. So far, her quest results have turned up empty. “Husbands can fall out of love. Friends can betray you. But when you’re stuck in a hellhole far from home, your family will move heaven and earth to get you back.” But in One Fell Sweep she gets a proposition from a new alien that wishes to stay at the Gertrude Hunt for information on her parents' whereabouts that she cannot help but accept. Even if that means risking everything and everyone she loves. And when I said everyone that Dina loves, I truly mean that, because this book introduces a few new characters that would be impossible for you not to fall in love with!: [image] Seriously, every hiss turned me into a bigger puddle of goo. “I have run, my lord. And I would do it again, if the circumstances called for it. Honor can’t keep my daughter alive, but I can.” And if you've been following my reviews of this series, you'll know that Arland is, hands down, my favorite character. (When will I grow out of my brooding vampire phase?) And seeing his character arc take a very unexpected turn made my heart melt and my ovaries swoon. Can we also talk about how this book takes place during Christmas? Like, this book already feels magical and is impossible for the reader to not want to be staying and living in Dina's inn, but the timeline correlating with our present day was something so amazing. I couldn't help but be enthralled with this book, in this world, and with these characters once again. “You taught me the meaning of loneliness, because when I don’t see you, I feel alone.” Seeing Dina grow not only as an innkeeper, but as a person, is so rewarding. I cannot wait to see the direction the fourth book takes, and how Dina and Sean are going to proceed with their new information, regarding the Ripper of Souls. IA is seriously in a league of their own for Urban Fantasy, but, honestly, they are dominating their take on Sci-Fi, too. With all the different planets and species, and then their greater message of acceptance and love with organisms that are different or misunderstood in this Galaxy, too? Then add in all their original and unique concepts. Like, this wife and husband writing duo are such a blessing to the literary world. #blessed Twitter | Tumblr | Instagram | Youtube | Steam | Twitch ...more |

All of these are expertly crafted. All of these are so very lyrical and beautiful. All of these feel powerful and impactful. All of these are absolutely haunting. And only Leigh Bardugo could bring me to tears while reading the sentence “I hope you stir the pot.” These stories are also illustrated and Sara Kipin's art took my breath away. This whole book is a gorgeous masterpiece from the dust-jacket, to the cover, to the spine, to the art that progresses throughout the story that eventually leads to full-page beautiful artwork, to Leigh’s perfect writing that will make you evoke every emotion ever felt. This is easily one of the top books published in 2017. And my personal favorite in the whole collection, which moved me to a whole hot mess of tears, was When Water Sand Fire . If you can only read one of these amazing stories, please pick that one. It’s the longest, but the most fulfilling, and hopefully is the start of something beautiful. I'm going to break down each short story with my thoughts, opinions, and individual star rating! ➽ Ayama and the Thorn Wood - ★★★★★ “This goes to show you that sometimes the unseen is not to be feared and that those meant to love us most are not always the ones who do.” This story was actually heartbreakingly perfect. It surrounds a small kingdom, where the king and his wife have given birth to two sons, one that is loved and one that is not because of the way he looks. Meanwhile, a young girl in the village is treated like a servant to her family that only sees her beautiful sister. Their paths cross, and continue to cross, because everyone in the village believe both of them to be expendable just based on their appearance, but together they forge something more beautiful than eyes can see and together they can change the kingdom. And they teach that kingdom that the world can be so much more beautiful when you stop only looking physically. ➽ The Too-Clever Fox - ★★★★ “I can bear ugliness,” he said. “I find the one thing I cannot live with is death.” This is such a beautiful story about perspective and how we are never as smart as we feel we are. Also, sometimes being smart has nothing to do with knowledge, but completely with the actions you take. This story centers around the cleverest fox in all of Ravka. From birth, he has been at a disadvantage because of his looks, but he compensates by being a witty and clever trickster. Also, this story reads so much like an actual fairy tale story that we would read in our world, even. ➽ The Witch of Duva - ★★★★★ “There was a time when the woods near Duva ate girls.” You can actually read this short story for free HERE thanks to Tor! And I can’t recommend you read it enough, because this short story actually shook my entire world. This is such a perfectly woven and absolutely haunting tale about a village who is mourning their lost girls, while also trying to endure very hard winters. And the ending of this story is beyond words, and turned me into a crying, melted, weeping, puddle on the floor. Also, this one should probably have a few trigger warnings for abuse (physical/sexual) and just violence in general, even though these things are very vague in the story they are still there, just woven in quietly. ➽ Little Knife - ★★★★ “It is dangerous to travel the northern road with a troubled heart.” This is a lovely tale about beauty and owing it to no one but yourself. This is also a tale about never underestimating what greedy men will do for things they feel they are entitled to. This story actually reminded me very much of my favorite saint, Rose of Lima, and her life and the consequences of being so beautiful. And an unexpected love story will always be the best love story. ➽ The Soldier Prince - ★★★★ “This is the problem with even lesser demons. They come to your doorstep in velvet coats and polished shoes. They tip their hats and smile and demonstrate good table manners. They never show you their tails.” Give me all of the Ketterdam tales, please. And this was a super twisted, yet amazing, retelling of The Nutcracker. And Leigh perfectly mixes what you would expect from a mash up of The Nutcracker and the streets of Ketterdam. And Droessen might be the best character debut in this entire short story collection. Like, I’d love a full-length novel just about him and his entire backstory. But yeah, this is such a creepy little tale that I really enjoyed. ➽ When Water Sand Fire - ★★★★★ “This is the problem with making a thing forbidden. It does nothing but build an ache in the heart.” Be still, my everything. This story. Lord, this story. This story gave me life. This short story was so perfectly crafted and the tale was so perfectly woven into a simple masterpiece. This was easily my favorite story in the entire collection. Also, this is the story that features one of the best characters ever written in modern day literature, the Darkling. This story surrounds two girls who live under the sea. One is ostracized for being different, and the other is forced to sing alongside her, but when they sing they’re more magical than any other singing group. After a turn of events, they are taken above the sea where magic grants them legs to walk among humans. But soon our main character, Ulla, realizes the heart of sea folk isn’t much different than the heart of men. And that pain and hatred can find a way inside of all of our hearts, if we let it. And I just am praying with all of my soul and with the entirety of who I am that we will cross paths with Ulla again in King of Scars. “I was not made to please princes.” I gave The Language of Thorns five stars overall, because out of a possible 30 stars (5 stars possible for each of the 6 stories) this collection accumulated 27 stars (90%). But, like, throw away all of those stars, because this book is one of the best things that 2017 has produced. It’s beautiful, detailed, thoughtful, whimsical, and every single thing I look for in good fairy tales. I can’t recommend this masterpiece enough. I have to start off this review by letting you all know that Sebastien de Castell is my favorite author, hands down. His writing is so beautiful, his banter leaves my sides hurting from laughter, his characters always find a way to weasel themselves into my heart, and his fantasy stories are a tier above anything else out there right now. He is such a clever and witty writer, and his books are exactly what I want and look for in my fantasy. Oh, and I get a little fangirly when I talk about him and his Greatcoats. So when I found out he was going to be writing a YA series, I knew I wouldn't be able to resist picking it up. I also knew after page one, and seeing that Kellen is a mini Falcio, that I would completely fall in love with it. In Kellen's clan there are two types of people: ➽ Jan'Tep - People that can wield magical powers. ➽ Sha'Tep - People that have failed their mage trials, have none or minimal magic powers, and are now servants to the Jan'Tep. That might mean being a servant in the home of a Jan'Tep family, or it might mean life forced to spend your days mining in the mines. Our main protagonist, Kellen, comes from one of the most powerful mage bloodlines in his clan. His father is renowned and feared by everyone, because he is so powerful. His mother is one of the most gifted healers ever known. His sister is the best and most magical student in his school, and she's only thirteen. Kellen isn't as lucky. “No one thought that I’d been clever or brave, not even my own father. All that mattered was that my magic was weak.” In this world all children have six tattooed bands on their arms that need to spark and then that child will be able to wield that type of magic. Some only spark one band, many spark two bands, but only the most powerful are able to spark all six. Regardless of how many an individual is able to spark; you have to pass all four trials to become a Jan'Tep! And unfortunately Kellen hasn't been able to spark any of the bands, and his sixteenth birthday, and the deadline to complete his trials in order to become a Jan'Tep are closely approaching. [image] ➽ Iron - Shields and other protective magic. ➽ Ember - Fire and lighting magic. ➽ Silk - Mind manipulation powers and magic. ➽ Sand - Seeing afar and secret knowledge magic. ➽ Blood - Physical manipulation magic. ➽ Breath - Wind and air magic. ➽ Shadow - Magic of emptiness, of the void, and of all things demonic. Shadow is the band that the children do not have, and that's because shadow is believed to be cursed and to drive the individual insane, while also encouraging them to perform evil acts. When the shadow decides to show in an individual, it doesn't spark a band, but a blackness will show. These mages are called Shadowblacks and are hunted and killed. Kellen is so scared that he is going to be forced to become a Sha'Tep and never have the magical abilities that everyone else seems to have. He also is constantly dealing with feeling like a disgrace to his families' name, because it feels like he will never be able to be what his family wants him to be. That is, until Ferius Parfax wonders into his town, and shows him that he can be anything he wants to be. “Life’s a curse, kid. Love is the cure.” Ferius is an Argosi, who draws maps of people and their cultures. Many believe they travel to witness great events. In true Sebastien de Castell fashion, I fell in love with so many of these characters, but Ferius completely stole my heart. Ferius is such a strong female lead, and there is so much more I want and need to know about her. Also, she wields a deck of cards. Yeah, think Gambit from X-Men and Twisted Fate from League of Legends, except tarot cards. I honestly want to be Ferius Parfax when I grow up. “The world is a big and dangerous place and there’s more darkness filling it than you’ll ever know. Only one thing fights that –men and women who don’t walk away from their debts. Pick a card now, Kellen, because I won’t ask again.” [image] The Jan'Tep people also live in fear of another culture of magical people, even though they have been dead for a long time. The Jan'Tep people are taught about a war that involved them and the Mahdek, who would summon demons and commit other evil acts. You know, like Shadowblacks. The Mahdek people also would use these One particular squirrel-cat ends up playing a major role in this story, and his name is Reichis! I couldn't help but picture Reichis as Rocket from Guardians of the Galaxy, even though I know he's not a raccoon, but his personality is so reminiscent. Seriously, such an amazing character. I would completely read a whole book surrounding him and his family. Also, if I wasn't completely sure about giving this story five stars before, Reichis' mother completely sealed the deal. Also, I want to state a trigger warning for animal cruelty/abuse. This is normally a big problem for me, and it didn't bother me too badly in this book, but that's not to say that it won't bother you. This book has a light amount of it, and nothing too graphic, but it is in a few scenes and I feel like it is very important to at least warn you guys. Kellen was so focused on trying to pass his mage trials and how not to be an embarrassment to his family, until some Jan'Tep people start losing their powers and many members of the clan begin to blame the mysterious Argosi woman who has just recently come to town. Which means Kellen is forced to figure out what really is happening to his people, while also trying to figure out who he really is himself. “I’m afraid there is a great deal of difference between not doing something and not being responsible for it.” This story is so unique, the writing is so superb, and the message of this story is so very important. Accepting who you are is sometimes the hardest battle we will fight in this life, and seeing Kellen become who he is and not what others expect him to, whether it's his family or the world, is something so beautiful that I don't have words for. “Because that card might just change the world.” Thank you again, Sebastien de Castell, for another book that I will cherish for the rest of my life. I'm not sure what the world has done to deserve your stories, but I am so very thankful for them. [image] Blog | Twitter | Tumblr | Instagram | Youtube | Twitch ...more |

Strange the Dreamer ★★★★★ “I would have chosen you, if they had let me choose.” Strange the Dreamer was my favorite book of 2017, and Muse of Nightmares is probably going to be my favorite book of 2018. These two books just bring so much love into my heart, and so much hope into my soul. I have no word combinations to ever begin to describe how much this book meant to me, or to do a review worthy of it, but I am going to try. “Sarai had lived and breathed nightmares since she was six years old. For four thousand nights she had explored the dreamscapes of Weep, witnessing horrors and creating them. She was the Muse of Nightmares.” Whenever I try to give a synopsis for Strange the Dreamer I always say it’s about a librarian who is in love with a lost city, and a girl who only wants to know what love is. Muse of Nightmares is a story all about love, and the different kinds of love that we will experience, and some that we will never experience, in our lifetime. The love between found families everywhere, between siblings both blood and not, between parents both distant and close, between lovers both new and old. And how all this love makes us choose actions that are both good and bad and all the things in-between. Love is truly the most complex force in the entire world, but when someone loves selflessly it can change everything. Sometimes we are unaware of how much power we have inside us, especially when that power is kindled from unconditional love. “For fifteen years, the people of Weep had lived with the certainty that the monsters were dead, and Eril-Fane had lived with the burden of it…” And this book picks right up after the harrowing events in Strange the Dreamer. So many of these characters, both blue and not, are dealing with a monumental amount of sorrow and grief. Lazlo, the librarian who has finally found the city that has taken over his heart and mind for his entire life, is going through the greatest amount of changes. If Strange the Dreamer is about finding the lost city of Weep, Muse of Nightmares is about why no one can remember the city in the first place. We get so much background on so many different worlds, and we get to see them all thread together to create a universe truly unlike anything else. But beautiful and terrible things happen in the name of good and bad, and we get to see pivotal choices be made, that resulted in what happened to Weep. “Skathis: god of beasts, king of horrors, daughter-stealer, city-crusher, monster of monsters, madman.” Yet, Muse of Nightmares also introduces you to two new characters: Kora and Nova. They are sisters that were born long before the last Godspawn, but the two stories quickly entangle with each other. And their sisterhood, even though heartbreaking, is so damn beautiful. Laini Taylor really expands on not only this story, but this world and universe too! And you’ll quickly see how this can all be connected to the Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy. And even though this was the final book in this duology, I believe Laini has so much more in store for us. I’ve been reading stories for over two decades and, in my opinion, Laini Taylor is the best storyteller I’ve ever read. Her words have such a magical impact on me, and I honestly think she has to be a little supernatural to weave words the way she does. (I’m secretly hoping she is fae!) You can just feel so much emotion while reading her passages, like she truly pours every ounce of herself into the words she uses, and I truly think there isn’t another human on earth who can do what she does. The word “beautiful” doesn’t even do her prose justice, so I’ll just say that it’s completely magical, so very immersive, and totally enthralling. She is easily my favorite author of all time. “The gods had been dead for fifteen years, after all, but their hate had lingered, and ruled in their stead.” I can’t even believe I’m typing this paragraph, but this book also heavily deals with children in cages, which is something that I truly, with my entire being, wish was only in fiction. Sadly, it’s not. Some of the scenes in this book were a little harder than most, just because of what is going on in 2018, so please be warned going in. Also, trigger and content warnings for war themes, death, torture, graphic blood depictions, slavery, human trafficking, a lot of talk of implied past rape, rape, extreme parental abuse, child abuse, thoughts of suicide, suicide, PTSD, grief, trauma, and sexual content. Trauma and grief, and how each person deals with those two things very differently, plays a huge role in this book. Yet, this story is a love letter to how we don’t have to be the mistakes of our ancestors. We can change, we can do things differently, and that it’s never too late. And vengeance will always be a driving factor, but you’ll soon realize that nothing, not even redemption, will lessen the feeling of loss. The only thing that can heal is love, but that’s a lesson that is so very hard to learn at times. “Once upon a time, a sister made a vow she didn’t know how to break, and it broke her instead. Once upon a time, a girl did the impossible, but she did it just a little too late.” Overall, I’m not sure another story will ever touch me like this duology has. My review doesn’t even do it justice, honestly. This is a once in a lifetime story that I will cherish for the rest of my life. This isn’t just a shining star in literature, but a glowing constellation over the world. If you haven’t picked up Strange the Dreamer, please do so, because I love this series with every bone in my body, with my heart, with my soul, with every fiber of my very being. And remember, it is never too late to start over, and it’s never too late to do good. Miller in exchange for an honest review. [image] (Me being extra!) 💗🦄📕 “Darnuir, memory is the heaviest of all things” This story surrounds Darnuir, who we first meet as an arrogant Dragon Prince, who does not want to evacuate his homeland. In this world, demons are being summoned constantly by a very evil and ancient power who has bestowed some of his power onto others, who are also helping him summon demons in hopes to completely take over this world. The demonic forces swarm Darnuir's city sooner than expected, and he is mortally wounded from a task that he wasn't even supposed to be in charge of. He may very well be the last of his bloodline, because of the demonic ambush, so a wizard teleports them away so that he can be reborn into a new dragon, where he will lose all of his memories, yet keep his same and very important bloodline running through his veins. Not only is the cover of this book gorgeous, but the story is so very beautiful as well! And don't get me wrong, I've read my fair share of resurrection novels, but I'm hard pressed to think of a book I've read about rebirthing someone. This story is captivating, the world is so unique, the writing is addicting, and the characters are so very unforgettable. ➽ Three Races: • Dragons - Homeland = Aurisha: The dragons of this age, have morphed themselves to look like humans, and only the strongest can morph back to their original forms, but we do not get to see that in this book at all. Dragons are much stronger, faster, and overall just perform much better than humans. • Fairies - Homeland = Val'Tarra: Be still, my heart. Fairies love the trees and think of them as their children. In this book, they are blued skinned, with wings, and are naturally very magical. Reading the parts of this book that took place in their homeland were my absolute favorites chapters. • Humans - Homeland = Brevia: The humans are legitimately just like us. They do have a many groups of people scattered amongst this world that call themselves Hunters. Hunters are trained to fight for most of their lives; whether it is wild game to feed their families or demons to save their cities. These three races are forced to band together to try to eliminate the demons and the people spawning them, and to also try and save their world. There is a lot of important discussion about race and prejudices in this book. There is a lot of animosity between the humans and the dragons in this book, and later the fairies and another race. It is done well, and the resolution and forgiveness became such an important part of this story. I also loved how this book showcased how it can feel to be on both opposing sides. “Love is made up of many pieces.” ➽ Three Race Leaders: • Draconess - The Dragon King and Darnuir's father. • Kasselle -Queen of the Fairies and my absolute favorite. • Arkus - The Human King, who has a missing son and is now overprotective of his infant daughter. These leaders are important, but the rest of the characters in this book are so amazing, too: • Darnuir - The Dragon Prince, and our main protagonist that I talked about above! • Cosmo - A hunter that wants to just live a happy life, but ends up being forced to take on important responsibility after important responsibility. • Cassandra - A human girl who has been in captivity all her life, until she is finally able to escape to give warning for the upcoming and terrible events that are about to happen. • Balack - Darnuir's best friend, who he has grown up with and now has a lot of unsettled tension with. • Blaine - Wielder of a powerful blade, who teaches Darnuir a lot about who he really was and who he needs to become. • Ochnic - Frost Troll who is basically a little cinnamon roll angel. Magic users in this world have to tap into their magic using cascade energy, which is very easy to become addicted to. If you use too much, you can go insane, therefore wizards are very few in this world, because most have gone mad. Wizards also have staffs, which doesn't seem too uncommon for a fantasy book, but Michael R. Miller did something super unique and pretty cool. The wizards in this world are all gifted staffs that come from a tree. Those trees are constantly linked to their staffs, and the wizard can teleport to that tree at any given time. On the negative side though, if something happens to the tree that the staff was made from, the staff also suffers the same fate. And what would a book be without... ➽ Some Villains: • Rectar - The big bad of this story! Honestly, he's still pretty much an enigma. • Castallan - The other wizard, and also a turn-cloak traitor who is obsessed with cascade energy. • Zarl - General of the demons, who also wears a pretty awesome set of blood armor. • Dukoona - Lord of the Spectres. He was taught by Rectar how to command demons, and for sure feels like his second in command, but he totally has his own thoughts and feelings. Okay, hear me out, but Dukoona is right up there with my favorite characters from this book, and I have so much hope for a redemption story for him. This whole series is surrounding these three magical, powerful, and mysterious blades that are needed to win this war against the demons. Again, such a unique concept for a story, and I was completely enthralled and yearned to learn more about the history of each of these weapons. ➽ Three Blades: • The Dragon's Blade - The embodiment of a dragon: fire, flying, and super powerful strength. The wielder must be from the original bloodline, which also makes the leader the king of dragons. • The Guardian's Blade - Stores very important memories and has a very magical light. The wielder will not every grow ill, and will not ever age. The blade must be passed down from the owner. • The Champion's Blade - Mysterious and missing sword that can help them win the war against demons. The sword will find only a wielder that is worthy of it and its power. AKA: The Sword of Gryffindor. In this book, we get to see Darnuir struggling with learning how to use the Dragon's Blade, and we get to see glimpses of and into the Guardian's Blade, but I cannot wait to find out any and everything about the Champion's Blade. I know I listed a lot of information, while also being very vague, but I feel like this story is honestly best to go into pretty blind. It is also rather difficult to talk about Darnuir's life pre-rebirth and post-rebirth, just because I could accidentally say so many spoilers! But what I will say is that this was an amazing and almost perfect read that I would completely recommend to any fantasy lover. This was such an addicting and fast read that I never wanted to put down. I still am absolutely blown away by this debut author's book! It also may be, to date, the best independently published book I've ever read. I cannot wait to continue on with Veiled Intentions very soon, and I have tremendously high hopes for this series and for Michael R. Miller's future! The Heart of Stone is a very addicting read, with very heart filled characters that will make you question your empathy. It may also be the only book I've ever read that's main protagonist is a Golem. “A knight. A girl. A lord. A golem.” Task is a Windcut Stone Golem, the last of his kind, and was solely made for killing, destruction, and war. Yet, Task has a soul, a heart, and feelings, no matter how hard he tries to suppress them. After being made and then sold from warmonger to warmonger for 400 years, unable to do anything but listen to his master's orders, Task has been taught to turn his feelings off and never get close to anyone. That is, until a little girl teaches him that feeling things do not make you weak and everyone is capable of love and doing the right thing, always. “Friendship was a dangerous thing for a golem.” Lesky is a stable girl, carrying all the lessons her mother taught her, while still having a sharp wit and tongue. Lesky made this story for me. She was so wise beyond her years, yet still so vulnerable. She was the heart of this story, and she constantly broke mine while reading. Despite being young and being dealt such an unfair hand at life so early, she is so strong and capable. Lesky was everything in this story to me. Besides Lesky, my favorite character was Alabast Flint, the Knight of Dawn. He has a preceding reputation from slaying a dragon in his youth, which has given him a lot of fame, which he has chosen to squalor in gambling halls and brothels. Now he has a drinking problem and owes some very scary people money. That is, until his debt is paid and he is recruited, maybe against his will, to kill a Windcut Stone Golem. It should be no problem since he's killed a dragon, true? Last, but not least, we have Lord Lash. I always get so disheartened when I read books surrounding war and none of the leaders are disabled in any way. This book gives you the representation and it feels so believable and authentic. Lash leads Last Fading, who has been winning this civil war for 9 years. That is, until the other side, the Truehards, purchase a Windcut Stone Golem named Task! [image] “You humans are fascinated by the death of your own kind. You bicker as an excuse to battle, caring not what damage it wreaks in the process. There will always be wars. And I will always fight them” The main villain in this book is also so expertly written. I was constantly reevaluating and making up crazy theories, just trying to figure out whose side this person was on. The constant twists and turns with this character were nothing short of amazing, and the emotional journey I went on reading about them was pretty insane. Honestly, this was one of the best villains I've ever read about, and I'd love to know their complete backstory. “History was a bloody mess, scraped up and strained into the books of the people who made the mess in the first place” But even with the amazing characters, The Heart of Stone's pacing is just so very slow. I was constantly getting fed breadcrumbs and promises for this huge civil war, but all I got was a few gory and violent snippets, but never any real war action. I also felt like the first 85% was very world building and character based, with drawn out promises of war, then that last 15% had everything coming at me really quickly, with a new promise of a brand new story line. This book was still super enjoyable, and don't get me wrong, the messages within this book were great and very important, but it made the almost 400 page book feel even longer. In addition to as much as I loved the characters and their growth, it just didn't help the book and its constant war theme from not dragging. It also made for a very anticlimactic ending, which for sure leaves a foot in the door for additional stories in this world. (Which I totally would read!) And I know there is a lot of world building to do in a standalone novel, but the magic system didn't feel completely cohesive, either. I wish I knew more about Glimpses and Grims, and the full spectrum of their power. I feel like we were only privy to certain aspects, since old magic is banned in this world, but it left me with a lot of questions. Again, I know only so much be done with 400 pages, but with the down time of the war developments I feel like we could have learned more about the magical abilities in this world. “Humans put far too much trust in their muskets. They wielded them like wizards’ staffs, as if just pointing and praying could solve any problem.” Despite those two qualms, I really enjoyed this book and think it was a pretty strong stand alone. Plus, I love these characters and will cherish a few for days to come. I also love supporting independently published authors and I truly think this book is a gem of 2017's fantasies. The Heart of Stone is unique and captivating, and has some really important messages inside of it. Blog | Twitter | Tumblr | Instagram | Youtube | Twitch ...more |

We are reintroduced to a girl that is living with a monster inside of her. She is being hunted, but trying to piece together all the parts that make up her past, including what happened to her mother, who taught her at a young age to be strong in a world that will refuse to ever accept you. Moriko and her sidekicks that she doesn’t want to love, Kippa and Ren, are on a completely new adventure, which involves a ship, a pirate crew, a mysterious island, and maybe some ghosts. The banter is perfection, the art is quite literally a gift to the world, and the story is a masterpiece. This is my favorite graphic novel series of all time. And the message about never letting anyone control you, about rising to the top of a world that wants nothing more than to drag you down, is so powerful. This graphic novel is a fantasy inspired world that is ownvoices, and this graphic novel is filled with PoC characters. Also, Moriko only has one arm, but shows the world constantly how she should never be underestimated because of her disability. This is a super diverse series, and this story is filled with discussions about fear tactics and hate speech, and shows how easily hate speech can turn into hate actions. Trigger and content warnings for a lot of blood, a lot of gore, and a whole lot of violence. Slavery, war themes, child abuse, animal cruelty, experimentations on unwilling living creatures, and one pretty dark birthing scene. This is a very dark graphic novel, please use caution. But this series is so perfect, and I truly believe it is a tier above anything else out there right now. If you feel like you are in the right mindset, I can’t implore you enough to pick Awakening up and give it a try. [image] I’m now going to just break down each single issue super quickly! Minor spoilers ahead! ➽ CHAPTER SEVEN - We are reintroduced to Moriko, and we get to revisit the monster that is trying to very hard to escape her. Kippa is the best character in all existence. Ren is second best. And I love all the cat people, so much, even when they are bad sometimes. Moriko finds a bone key and procures a ship and a crew to take her to an island that might have the answers about her mother. ➽ CHAPTER EIGHT - Moriko talks about how it has always hurt her that she never received any Goddess-marks to easily show that she is like the other Arcanic children, even though she carries so much power within herself. And then we see a new monster that lurks in the sea below, right before the ship is attacked. ➽ CHAPTER NINE - We get to see some flashbacks of Moriko’s mother teaching her, but we see how hard her mother was on her. Honestly? It just made me want to protect her even more. Also, Kippa is smart, perfect, and oh so loyal. I love her more than words. ➽ CHAPTER TEN - This issue had some of the most beautiful art I’ve ever seen in my entire life. I could frame something on every single page. Perfection. But Moriko, Kippa, and Ren are on a smaller boat, heading to the island together. And the bone key comes into play, in a pretty amazing way. But once they get to the island, they quickly realize they are not alone. ➽ CHAPTER ELEVEN - I loved this issue, because we get to know Moriko’s monster a little bit better through more flashbacks. And I’m loving all these breadcrumbs so much. And Moriko also gets more knowledge about her mother, but for a price. ➽ CHAPTER TWELVE - Oh boy, this concluding issue left me needing the next volume this very instant! Also, I know I shouldn’t, but I love the ferryman. Moriko is able to put on the part of the mask she has in her possession, but someone else senses it immediately; her father. [image] Again, this graphic novel is everything to me. Marjorie M. Liu & Sana Takeda are a gift to the world, and I will read this series for as long as they create it. If you’re looking for an adult, high fantasy, dark, ownvoices, Asian inspired graphic novel series, please pick this up. From the art, to the characters, to the mysteries, to the messages, this is a masterpiece in every single way. Vol. 1 ★★★★ Vol. 2 ★★★★ Vol. 3 ★★★★★ Vol. 4 ★★★★ Vol. 5 ★★★★★ Vol. 6 ★★★★★ “Nothing in the universe was safe from the endless war between mom’s planVol. 1 ★★★★ Vol. 2 ★★★★ Vol. 3 ★★★★★ Vol. 4 ★★★★ Vol. 5 ★★★★★ Vol. 6 ★★★★★ “Nothing in the universe was safe from the endless war between mom’s planet and dad’s moon…” This seventh installment is truly a masterpiece, and one of the most impactful graphic novels I’ve ever read. The ending of this is true and utter perfection, and the emotional range that Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples are able to evoke is truly something I don’t have words for. This but seventh volume truly shows why Saga is one of the best graphic works in existence. And this volume really talks about heaven and hell and believing and not knowing. All six issues really have the theme of what if there is something better after this life? What if there is something worse? What if there is nothing at all? And we get to see so many people live their lives feeling very differently on the spectrum, while also seeing it shape their lives entirely. We get to see some amazing new characters in this, but we also are forced to say goodbye to many. All the volumes in this world can get pretty dark, but this one especially has some major content and trigger warnings for sexual content, violence, attempted suicide, death, murder, an animal death, talk of miscarrying, and war themes. Please use caution going into this bind-up. And it feels extra heartbreaking because you only want the best for these characters, after seeing them go through such horrific things for the last six volumes, all because two people, from two different races, decided to fall in love. As always, I'm now going to break down each chapter (single issue) in this bind-up. I mostly do this so I can go back and refresh what has happened in which specific issue. There will be SPOILERS, so please do not continue if you have not read this graphic-novel or the ones leading up to this volume! [image] ➽ CHAPTER 37 We get to see Alana (who is very pregnant), Marko, Hazel, Izabel, Petri, and Sir Robot all together on their latest ship. But they desperately need to refuel, so they go to a new place called Phang, where they meet Jabarah, Kurti, and their whole big family! We also get to see Gwendolyn, Lying Cat, and Sophie (who is ten now), on a new adventure together! ➽ CHAPTER 38 Hazel and the family end up staying for six months on Phang! And they become very close with Jabarah, Kurti, and their family! We get to see The Will meet up with Velour (Gwendolyn’s wife), because he is trying to track her down. And we get to see a new villain, The March, who is a two headed alien, who kills Izabel and I’m forever crying. ➽ CHAPTER 39 The Will is fired from his freelancing job and is just doing worse and worse mental health wise. Hazel and everyone else are trying to deal with the loss of Izabel. And this volume really starts the questions about an afterlife, and what people are willing to do in the name of it. ➽ CHAPTER 40 Gwen is selling or trading a very mysterious box that is going to do very bad things. Prince Robot is spiraling worse and worse, and finds some drugs that helps remind him of everything he as lost, and he makes some really poor choices. ➽ CHAPTER 41 Phang is going to crash into a timesuck, so Marko and Alana are desperately trying to get everyone together leave. The Will meets up with Sophie and the gang, and gives her the choice to come with him. Sophie stays with Gwendolyn, and Lying Cat doesn’t want to leave Sophie, so she stays, too. ➽ CHAPTER 42 Marko shoots a weapon, but it’s going to really impact him down the road, but there was no other choice. The Will’s dog dies, and I was not prepared. And then Jabarah decides to keep her family on a dying thing because she has faith in a higher power. So, Hazel and the gang are forced to leave, but they lose so very much. [image] Again, this entire volume is about faith and believing and loss and how each person will live their lives differently surrounding those three things. The last pages of this? They broke me. I had tears streaming down my face as those heartbreaking black pages. Again, the emotions this story is able to evoke from me is something I will never have words for. But I love these characters, this art, and this beautiful story with my entire existence. Blog | Instagram | Twitter | Tumblr | Youtube | Twitch ...more |

[image] 1.) A Darker Shade of Magic ★★★ 2.) A Gathering of Shadows ★★★ “Love and loss,” he said, “are like a ship and the sea. They rise together[image] 1.) A Darker Shade of Magic ★★★ 2.) A Gathering of Shadows ★★★ “Love and loss,” he said, “are like a ship and the sea. They rise together. The more we love, the more we have to lose. But the only way to avoid loss is to avoid love. And what a sad world that would be.” I have read one book in this series every year for the BooktubeSFF Awards. And every year I enjoy what I’m reading, I close the book pretty pleased, and then I sit down to write my review and start thinking about how these are such big books with so little happening. And I know they are character driven. One of my favorite books of all time is the most character driven thing out there, but for some reason I just don’t love this series like everyone else does. A Conjuring of Light is the third and final novel in this trilogy that surround four different parallel Londons: ➽ Grey London - is like our real world's London, with no magic. Delilah Bard is from this London. ➽ Red London - is the home of the main protagonist, Kell, where he and his royal family rule. There is an abundance of magic in this London, most coming from a red river which lights up the whole city. ➽ White London - is a city in war with itself. It was ruled by evil twins, but now has a new king. Everyone in this London tries to fight for magic and power within this corrupt city. ➽ Black London - and is still basically a mystery. It is essentially a lost city, since regular people cannot travel between worlds. And after the brutal cliffhanger ending that was A Gathering of Shadows, A Conjuring of Light picks right back up after the events! And without saying anything too spoilery, since this is the concluding novel and all, our main character, Kell Maresh, and his home, Red London, are in serious danger. But with the help of a ruthless thief/assassin, Lila Bard, a swoon-worthy pirate, Alucard Emery, the best prince to have ever lived, Rhy Maresh, and a very morally grey Antari, Holland Vosijk, they are trying to save everything they’ve ever known and loved. “Life isn't made of choices, it's made of trades. Some are good, some are bad, but they all have a cost.” And even the idea of four different color coded Londons, with a handful of magical people who can travel between them, is so damn genius that I don’t even have words for it. Also, V.E. Schwab is such a talented writer. The way she echoes phrases from different books, or even sentences from previous chapters, is so powerful and is able to evoke all the emotions from me. She truly can weave and craft paragraphs together so expertly and I’m constantly impressed with her writing. I just feel like not a lot happens in her books. Like, a few big, key, important things happen without question, and storylines get completed, but I just feel like it is such a longwinded journey to get there. And these books are so easily consumable that you don’t really realize until after you’ve closed the book. I mean, at least for me and my personal reading experiences. Seriously, go back and look at my other two reviews; I say the same thing. Also, the big bad villain just fell so very short for me. The magic started off so dang well, but the villain really ended up feeling lackluster to me. But my biggest complaint about the other two installments in this series is that they don’t read or feel adult to me. But you know what A Conjuring of Light reads and feels like? Adult, without question. Also, just a little caveat, if an author says their work is in a certain age bracket/genre, then it is. I am just saying A Darker Shade of Magic and A Gathering of Shadows don’t feel or read like adult fantasy to me, but I’m not saying they aren’t. But ACOL did give me those brutal moments that made me go “okay, this isn’t YA” quite a lot. Also, trigger and content warnings for abuse, torture, abduction, slavery, captivity, talk of suicide, violence, gore, heavy blood depiction, abandonment, and depiction of grief and PTSD. Oh and I guess sexual content, too, but nothing too graphic. (Also, hello, perverted Melanie here to report that that sex scene was 11/10 and was so smooth and sexy and I actually loved it!) “I have never known what to make of you. Not since the day we met. And it terrifies me. You terrify me. And the idea of you walking away again, vanishing from my life, that terrifies me most of all.” But my biggest love for this series is Rhy Maresh, who has completely and without question stole my heart. He is easily my favorite character in this series. My beautiful, pure, cinnamon roll, unbreakable boy. I stan one man from this series, and it’s him. And he deserves everything good in the universe. [image] Breathtaking art meliescribbles “We don't choose what we are, but we choose what we do.” Overall, take this review with a large grain of salt. I am for sure in the minority with not loving these books as much as everyone else. And even though this isn’t my favorite series, I think Victoria is incredibly talented and I can’t wait to see what she does next. And I truly think that these books get better and better, with A Conjuring of Light being my favorite in the series, and the last couple chapters of this book had me smiling from ear to ear in pure happiness. And I ultimately do feel really fulfilled and happy with the ending. Plus, I’m very interested (especially after gushing with my friend Julie) with reading the graphic novel series set around a character from this world. Also, I have the highest of hopes for the spinoff that Victoria is working on. I just hope I fall completely head over heels in love, instead of only just enjoying. I truly believe this is the start of something that is going to be amazing; unfortunately this first installment into this world wasn't quite as gripping as I'd hoped. This novella takes place in 1850 Great Britain, and has a very important emphasis on the lack of women's rights that takes place during that time. Our main protagonist, Charlotte, is a very talented illustrator, but she has to sell her work under a man's pen name. Of course the small amount of money she is making is only to help her brother, who she loves very much, and is only until she is married off to her stable and reliable fiancé. Charlotte's brother, Ben, has tried to go away to school to pursue his love for engineering multiple times, but always is forced to come home because he gets very ill when he is away. Charlotte always does everything in her power to take care of him while he is home, but the financial stress from paying for his schooling has impacted their family very much. Charlotte's father has taken out a very risky loan, which he is unable to pay back. Once Charlotte learns of his position, and the position he has put their family in, she is determined to try and fix things herself. Unfortunately, her father has already taken matters into his own hands and has very selfishly tried to fix things, because he believes that Ben has magical powers, even though it is truly Charlotte that is harboring the secret of her magical powers from the world. In this world families are able to sell off their children to the Royal Society if the children possess magical abilities. The stronger their magical abilities the higher the price is for them. The Royal Society claims to take good care of them, and even allows them to come back visit their loved ones after they have been trained to harness their powers, but many people choose to hide themselves and their children from the Royal Society. Also, enforcers will come and take children and adults that have magical abilities, without having to be informed. They claim that if a person goes too long without training their powers they will "go wild" and hurt others and themselves. They are taken to be immediately tested, with or without their consent. Yet, when a parent informs the Royal Society about the chance of their child having magical abilities, their magi will come to your house and perform three tests to see how powerful the child is and how useful they will be for their personal college. ➽ Magus Lillian Ainsworth - College of Thermaturgy ➽ Magus William Ledbetter - College of Dynamics ➽ Magus Thomas Hopkins - College of Fire Kinetics Once Charlotte's father informs the Royal Society of Ben's powers, Charlotte finds it necessary to help her brother with the three tests he is given to prove his magical worth, because Charlotte is scared of what will happen to her brother and the rest of her family if her brother fails them all. And, obviously, the better he does on the tests, the better the offers will be to fix their parent's financial situation. Oh, and all of this is going on while a somewhat murder mystery is going on, too! Charlotte is tangled up with one of these magis, in something that is much bigger than both of them realize. This subplot really is the reason I have such high expectations for the Industrial Magic series, and I look forward to what the next one will bring. Also, I touched on this above, but there is a good discussion to be had from this book and what it means to be a "good woman" and what the "woman's place" was like in the 1850's. I really appreciated it, and it shows how far we've come, but how much we still need to go. TL;DR - there are feminist undertones throughout this book and it's really amazing. I really enjoyed this novella, and found it to be very fast-paced, especially with that ending. I'm only giving this three stars, because it felt like a starter story, where the author is telling you all the information you need to know before entering the actual heart of the story, but I have really high hopes that I would end up giving the next book in this series a much higher rating. I'm actually very interested with continuing on, and I have nothing but high hopes. Blog | Twitter | Tumblr | Instagram | Youtube | Twitch ...more |

This is such a beautifully crafted adventuring mission that surro [image] ARC provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This is such a beautifully crafted adventuring mission that surrounds a charming band of mercenaries, as they travel from town to town, on foot or sky ship, prepping for what is likely to be their last tour. And these towns are filled with, and surrounded by, every type of fantasy creature and monster that you could ever wish for: Centaurs, Treants, Owlbears, Direwolves, Ogres, Goblins, Kobolds, Gorgons, Wyverns, Chimeras, Gnolls, Harpies, Daevas/Succubus, Trolls, Cannibals, Dragons, Phoenixes, Gremlins, Giants, Slimes, Nymphs, Blood Eaters/Vampires, Moonies, Rakshas, Shifters, Golems, Gargoyles, Demons, Death Knights, Minotaurs, Cyclops, and so much more. This mercenary band, Saga, was once the greatest band in all of the five kingdoms of Grandual, but after almost twenty years of no longer adventuring, the members find themselves a little older, much slower, and, for the sake of kindness, their bodies a lot softer. Yet, even though they are older, slower, and softer, they all did their fair share of leveling up and did an even bigger share of killing dangerous monsters in their pasts. Not only do they have a reputation that precedes them, they also have some pretty legendary weapons. ➽ Clay Cooper/Slowhand, who wields Blackheart - a wooden shield made from a very famous battle with a Treant. Clay is working on the Watch, and is happy with his simple life as a husband and father. ➽ Gabriel/Golden Gabe, who wields Vellichor - a sword that is much more powerful than humanly imaginable. Gabe hasn't made the best choices in life, but now is in the dire need for help. ➽ Matrick/Matty Skulldrummer, who dual wields Roxy and Grace - now royal daggers. Matrick is now a King and in a very unhappy and unfaithful marriage. ➽ Arcandius Moog, who carries a Bag of Holding - filled with a vast array of weapons, and a hat that conjures refreshments on a whim. Moog is living in a wizard tower, trying to find a cure to a deadly disease. ➽ Ganelon, who wields Syrinx - a massive battle axe made from the stuff of nightmares. Ganelon has spent the last nineteen-years alone in captivity. ➽ (view spoiler)[Larkspur/Sabbatha, who wields Umbra - a scythe acquired from killing a very deadly foe. I have played a warlock in World of Warcraft for over ten years; there was no way that this Daevas/Succubus wasn't going to be my favorite character. I loved that she was a bounty hunter, and I loved her path to redemption then deception. I loved the budding romance with Ganelon, and the twist at the end broke my heart and made me leap for joy. Seriously, I need book two, Bloody Rose, now. (hide spoiler)] “As individuals they were each of them fallible, discordant as notes without harmony. But as a band they were something more, something perfect in its own intangible way.” The important mission that is throwing Saga back into the spotlight, and forcing them out of retirement, is that Golden Gabe's daughter, Rosie, is trapped deep inside the Heartwyld, in the ruins of Castia, with four-thousand other people. Everyone in Saga knows that this could very well be a suicide mission, but all the members have their different reasons, or lack thereof, for agreeing to help Gabe on this impossible tour. “But I need you to believe in one more story, Rose.” If Gabe’s voice had been stone before, now it was harder, colder, the mask of ice on a mountain’s wind-scarred face. “I am coming to Castia,” he said. “I am going to save you.” The Heartwyld is a very dangerous place, filled with many of the creatures I listed above, but in the Heartwyld people can also contract a body eating disease called "the rot" that eats you away very slowly, eventually killing you. It is noncontagious, but easily picked up when an individual spends too much time in the forests of Heartwyld, and is truly the biggest fear in Grandual. The mercenary bands of today aren't what they were in Saga's day. No one wants to get the rot, but everyone wants to be a hero. So instead of venturing into the forests to kill dangerous monsters, like Saga did back in their day, people in the cities just breed monsters and the bands fight them in the arena to prove their worth and to claim their fame. “Life was funny, and fickle, and often cruel. Sometimes the unworthy went on living, while those who deserved better were lost.” And what would this story be without a good villain? Lastleaf, a Druin (which is kind of like a bunny person and makes my heart so happy), is a villain that will also make you feel a great deal of empathy. He is the Master of the Heartwyld Horde, and he wants the destruction that is taking place in Castia to spread, and to enter all the five kingdoms so he can rule, but also because the creatures in Grandual are always deemed monsters and treated inhumanely. I mean, the biggest form of entertainment is to force these monsters, which are being bred in captivity, to fight in arenas against these bands just looking for fame. This story will make you self reflect and think about what your definition of evil is. Is it the "bad guys" that are performing evil acts to free their people from the terrible treatment they are receiving, or is it the "good guys" doing terrible things to creatures they deem inferior and to each other, on the land they stole from the creatures in the first place. “You’d be surprised how many choices one makes due to the intrinsic nature of self-preservation” Between the Heartwyld and Lastleaf, Clay and the gang feel rather hopeless about their chances to rescue Rosie throughout the story, but with some good luck, new information, magical portals, great friends, and wonderful new acquaintances, they are able to have one last amazing adventure that will go down in history. “This moment, is when you step out from the shadow of the past. Today you make your name. Today your legend is born. Come tomorrow, every tale the bards tell will belong to you, because today we save the world!” This book reads like you're playing a fresh Dungeons & Dragons campaign, or you're starting a new character on World of Warcraft, or reading the lore behind a new Magic the Gathering set. There are so many nods at other fantasy stories, too, and I appreciated every smile I was forced to make because of them. This book is an ode to fantasy lovers, readers and gamers alike, and the immersion is nothing short of wonderful and all encompassing. This book is a fantasy lover's dream, with the funniest banter, from characters you can't help but root for and fall in love with. I am so impressed with Nicholas Eames' debut novel, and I see nothing but amazing things in his future. Also, Moog is everything I've ever wanted in a wizard, and I will read any and everything with that little adorable cinnamon roll in it. Needless to say, my nerdy self absolutely loved and devoured this story. This book is for sure under-hyped and truly is a shining light in today's new fantasy releases. I recommend this with my whole heart, and hope you, too, give it a try, because it is so very worth it. I unquestionably cannot wait to get my hands on book two. Repetitive info dumps, left field plot twists, and uncomfortable cousin kissing. Yeah, this book was a chore to read, to say the least, and it is easily the worst book I've read so far in 2017. “Has no one told you, child, not to wander in unfamiliar woods? Have you not read your fairy tales?” This is a historical fantasy novel, set in 19th century Hungary, with some Hungarian folklore. The author actually places real people from Hungarian history in her story, too, so I'll give her a little credit for a unique setting, but it didn't help the actual enjoyment of this book. I think it is important to note that I am not Hungarian, but Lex's review is very important in terms of accurate representation, and is just amazing in general. If you are questioning the authenticity on certain elements of this book, her review is a must read. At this point I feel like all the "new" YA fantasy is just the same. You can take your pick, if you've read one you've read them all, but Blood Rose Rebellion still feels a little worse for some reason, even with the more unique setting. I didn't care about any of the characters, I felt no chemistry for any relationship, and I never believed in any of the friendships. This book reads cold and stoic. The basic storyline is that our main protagonist, Anna, lives in a society where your worth is dependent on your magical ability. The trick of this statement is a powerful society, the Luminate, which her family is a part of, announce whether children have magical abilities or not. Anna is deemed barren, yet everyone else's spells seem to break or backfire around her. After she ruins her sister's magical debutante party, and while doing so because they both have a crush on the same boy, the Luminates become much more interested in Anna. After an offer to go to Hungary with her grandmother, Anna's parents force her to go in hopes that it will clear her sister's good name, so she can be married off like a proper lady, and that Anna can escape the radar of the Luminates. So off to Hungary Anna and her grandmother go. And this wouldn't be a historical fiction novel if the highborn lady didn't fall in love with a G*psy boy. So in Hungary, a weird sort of love triangle ensues, with sexual tension involving Anna's third cousin, along the "meat" of the story, which will be information dumping alongside mixed messages to confuse you constantly. The author will then throw in twists to try to rationalize the story along. Then tragedy will strike to pull at your heartstrings, but the story has been so convoluted for so long that you won't even care who lives or who dies, you'll just want it to be over. “I did not want to be remembered. I had only wanted to be loved.” I'm sorry, I really am, but this book was one of the books I knew I should have DNFed, but I hate DNFing ARCs so here we are. Again, I never want to turn people away from trying a book, so I hope if you give this book a try that you will feel differently than I did.
