I was super excited about this book, it sounded very intriguing with a highly decorated female Army soldier going after what she wants. With that said I could not get behind this story, it not only painted her in a not so kind light but all of the characters and it may just be me with military family but I couldn't get behind several of the elements and the way they are handled in this one. I made it about 100 pages in and just saw no reason to continue after finding nothing redeeming....more

I may try to pick it up again once I am more comfortable in the genre....more

I love the cover but found the book to be really confusing. I listened to the audio book but DNFed at about 50%. I had borrowed the audio book from the library and was finding that I couldn't bring myself to listen to more than half an hour at a time. This book is more of 3 stories in one and the audio book was a bit confusing jumping between the stories. The narration was also so slow, even when listening to it at 2x the speed, that it was easy to lose track of what was happening and get distracted while listening. I think the writing is beautiful, flows beautifully but I think the story gets lost in the beautiful words. I many have also enjoyed this more as a print book (but the wait for the physical or ebook from the library is over 32 weeks), it may have made the transitions between the stories within the book smoother and I could have read at my own pace....more

The first few pages were so thrilling and heart pounding, I had high hopes for this book but unfortunately after that it got so overly descriptive and the pacing was far too slow for my liking. The small amount of dialog that there was in the parts I did read were disconnected and written in a vernacular which made it even more difficult to decipher what was being said....more

Sadly, I had to DNF this one a little over halfway through. I really struggled to connect with the characters and also found the world building, timeline and character development to be scattered and confusing. The pacing was also extremely slow, there was potential for it to pick up where I left off but when I had time to read and yet still was distracted after only focusing for about 10 pages after 2 weeks of reading, it was time to put it down. It felt a bit like an incomplete manuscript. Though it had great representation and good potential, it just wasn't the book for me at this time....more

This second one was just as slow as the first and clearly revolves around the characters struggles with depression and PTSD. I am not a huge fan of magical realism and 'The Chosen One' is one of my most disliked tropes and this seemed to be headed down that track. It is written as a draft of book with commentary throughout by the characters themselves. Every time I would start to get into the book, I would be pulled back out by this sudden comments. I received it in a book subscription box and I was really looking forward to it. The book is written with a very thick accent and that combined with the small print of a mass market book made it very difficult to read. So I thought I would give it a try on audio book, and again the narration reading the text with the accent was so difficult to understand. It was very distracting and I had a hard time connecting with the characters or following the story. I had to give up after only 4 chapters. ...more

I have been struggling to get through it and decided to DNF about 1/3 of the way through. I really was not a fan of the main character, I believe she represents some kind of sensory disorder or something but I just found myself irritated with her when I wanted to just hear about the history of her kind. I really struggle with the ignorant chosen one tropes, and this one definitely has an naive chosen one character who has no idea who she is or what she is supposed to do, even though everyone else around her seems to know. She also made some really annoyingly stupid choices. This may be better for a young middle grade reader, but as an adult reader, I wasn't able to get through it....more

Sadly I ended up having to DNF this one. The preview was 178 pages, I made it to 85. There are 2 points of view but they are telling the story of one character but from two different timelines. As a result it was taking an extra long time to establish what was going on and who the characters were, I was never able to connect with the character and the story was still every confusing. Also I am not a fan of the footnotes, yes Jay Kristoff did them (and I am not a fan of them there either) but that doesn't me that world building elements that you can't work into the story should be handled this way....more

It seems I had to DNF this book about a third of the way through the audio book. I was not invested in the story at all and was rather bored with it. It seems to be a Black Beauty re-telling but with dragons but not nearly as exciting as you would expect. There was also a lot of contradictions throughout the story, one minute saying that human speech is a series of annoying clicks and non-musical sound, and then the next expounding on an exact conversation between humans. All in all, it was a bit uninspired and I couldn't see myself listening to a full 9+ hours of a book I wasn't enjoying....more

Then a friend gifted me the 2nd book in the My Review: (July 2020) So the first time tried to read this book, the humor was just not working for me. Then a friend gifted me the 2nd book in the series knowing how much I love gnomes and I felt like I kind of had to give it a second chance. I did manage to make it through the book but again it really didn't work all that great for me. I understand what they are doing and I love the way they are twisting classic fantasy on its head but the satire (and often gross) humor is just not to my liking. I will continue with the second book, like I said because a friend who isn't a reader went out of her way to find a book for me.
Initial Attempt (November 2018):I went back and forth about this book but finally decided to give it a shot. It turns out it was definitely not for me. I read about 75 pages before DNFing it (I also tried to listen to about 2 hours of audio). It is definitely a rather quirky book with a lot of satire humor that I just couldn't get into. If you like that type of book, you will probably really enjoy this but it just wasn't for me....more
