Still, I learned so many new things and feel like I will need to revisit this regularly to refresh the knowledge.
There's so many interesting concepts in the book other then the main System 1 vs System 2 thinking:
- cognitive biases and heuristics - prospect theory - endowment effect - regression to the mean - planning fallacy - intuitive expertise - the experiencing self vs the remembering self
The only issue I had was that sometimes there were too many examples and experiments that required the reader to test themselves. This got a bit too repetitive....more

We are unbelievably biased and most of our decisions are based on illogical, subjective factors of which we are not even aware.
There are so many examples of experiments where people made biased, irrational decisions and when asked about it they made up completely bogus reasons.
We favour people from our in-group without knowing and even when that in-group is just completely made up (for example randomly chosen for an experiment). If we are an accountant we will favour other accountants, if our name is Smith we will favour people named Smith and so on.
Very enlightening book. I will be reading more of Mlodinow's books for sure....more

The questions the book tries to answer include: who is a psychopath? can we accurately identify someone who is?
It is a fun book which is very easy to read and has quite a fair bit of humour typical of the author.
The downside is that sometimes it feels that the author goes out on a bit of a tangent which is quite interesting (for example when looking at children bipolar disorder and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, known as DSM-5) but has nothing to do with psychopathy. Would have liked it if he focused more on strictly the psychopathy aspect....more

This is a short book about understanding male psychology by using Jungian psychology to compare it to the Arthurian myth of the quest of Parsifal for This is a short book about understanding male psychology by using Jungian psychology to compare it to the Arthurian myth of the quest of Parsifal for the Holy Grail. Each stage of masculine development (childhood, teenage years, maturity, old) is paralleled to parts in the myth of Parsifal.
For example at one point Parsifal can not advance due to the fact that he still wears the woollen clothing knit by his mother. This symbolises the fact that young males must break away from the influence of their mother in order to advance in file.
There are some interesting parts, but the book is too brief and too shallow to touch on all of the aspects of masculine psychology in a meaningful way....more

Instead the book is based around a set of anecdotes and case studies of several sociopaths: from a psychiatrist who faked her credentials and did a lot of harm to a CEO and to simple sociopaths that are just social parasites, neighbourhood pests or nuisances.
The premise of the book is that around 5% of the populations are sociopaths which have no conscience whatsoever. They do not feel any remorse or have empathy. There are various types of sociopaths which cause different levels of harm.
The book discusses the various theories about sociopaths and also why humans developed a conscience in the first place. There is also an interesting insight that Asian societies for some reason have lower levels of sociopaths however this could be due to the stricter social norms keeping them more in check.
It was a good read albeit quite brief and not in too much depth....more

Jordan Peterson has not necessarily written anything new but rather what he has done is taken the writings of various great thinkers and distilled them into a set of everyday rules which can be followed in order to ensure a little less desperation and malevolence in life. He has taken inspiration from the psychology of Jung, the mythology of Joseph Campbell, the religious interpretation of Mircea Eliade and so on. The book can also be used as a starting point to further reading in the aforementioned authors. ...more
Memories, Dreams, Reflections is not as much an autobiography of Jung's life but rather a chronological recount of his psychic development all the wayMemories, Dreams, Reflections is not as much an autobiography of Jung's life but rather a chronological recount of his psychic development all the way from childhood to maturity. This is essential reading for anyone interested on Jung and his theories of psychoanalysis.
The book is a reflective study on the past, from Jung's first realisations as a child, his deep dreams and visions, all the way to his education, his studies, his friendship and then his break with Freud and his travels all across the world. Jung's whole work mirrors his psychic development and learning where it all came from can help with understanding his other works a lot better.
This book can serve as a good introduction to Jungian psychology along with 'Man and His Symbols' and 'Modern Man in Search of a Soul'. There is also a very useful glossary at the end which can be used for any explanation of Jungian terms such as unconscious, anima, animus and so on....more
