I had such high hopes for this book, but almost dnf'd it a couple of times. The first 50% of the book was so incredibly slow and it felt like a chore to turn the page. Now the second half of the book did get better, but not enough to redeem the whole novel. ..... Character-wise, I loved Altair <3 He was funny, charming, nice and made me not completely hate this book. Nasir was okay, he wasn't overly amazing, but he didn't suck - he was just there. He was just annoying at some parts and he is a ways off from being a book-boyfriend for me. As for Zafira, I honestly liked her in the first half, but by the end, I just wasn't getting her character anymore. Literally, ALL she talked about was Deen. Like enough is enough. ..... Now the romance I actually kind of liked. Yes, it is a slow-burn romance, but it was actually written pretty well. Nothing happened until I was halfway into the book, but then it got a tiny bit spicy. We got to the stages where everyone can see the connection between them except for themselves. Butttt then it felt like it just fizzled out before it really even started. It started out soo good and then nothing. ..... The premise of this book is what really drew me in. The whole pretending to be a man and going on an adventure to find the artifact. In my head, I think I had a different vision of what was going to happen. I didn't foresee other people going on the trip with them, which was kind of disappointing. ..... Overall, I was just bored and wanted to be done with it. I will most definitely not be continuing on with this series :/ The only reason I'm giving this a rating of 3.25 is because of Altair and there was a knife to the throat scene. ..... Beach read follows two authors, Gus and January, who are both experiencing writer's block. Since they will be neighbours for three months, they decide to strike a deal: They will both attempt to write the others genre of book. Long story short, January usually writes happy romance books, and Gus writes the exact opposite, so they switch.
I didn't seem to connect with the plotline or characters... The mention of cheating in the book also rubbed me the wrong way. And in addition to that, one of the plotlines reminded me of something that happened in my own life and it made me want to throw this book across the room *not in a good way*

Once I hit 70 pages in though I was hooked. I loved Lira and Elian ahhh!! The last sea/ocean/pirate book I read was Daughter of the Pirate King, which I honestly hated. I was worried the books would be similar, but they are far from it. In Daughter of the Pirate King, the guy (Kieran I think), was weak and bland. I hated his character, but Elian in this book was perfect. I adored his sarcasm and literally everything about him. He was daring and risky, but smart all at the same time. ..... Lira was amazing too and I loved having her POV and how she changed throughout the novel. The side characters were also perfection and although they all hated each other at times, at the end of the day they had each others backs :) #foundfamily ..... Now for the romance - This is a slow burn. Like extremely slow and nothing happens until page 250 maybe. And although it was a slow burn, it still kind of felt rushed. I knew that Lira had started to have feelings for Elian, butttt I wasn't so sure he reciprocated those feelings right away. This is the only reason why I took off 0.5 from my final rating. Usually, with fantasy books, the beginning can be quite slow with the world building etc, but this hooked me from the start and I did not want to finish it. I loved having the dual POV between Adraa and Jatin because the readers can begin to piece things together before the characters. AND the connection between the two of them was undeniable from the start. These two have my heart.
Definitely one of the top 5 books I've read this year <3...more

Jude and Cardan have my whole entire heart. They had the perfect enemies-to-lovers story and I loved how it was all wrapped up in the third book. I also loved the Roach and the Bomb omg I was smiling to myself about those two <3 Taryn and everyone else can go hug a cactus.

These Violent Delights is roughly based on Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. It's 1926 in Shanghai and disease is sweeping its way through the city. At the heart of it all is Roma, the heir of the White Flowers, and Juliette, the heir of the Scarlet Gang. Besides the visible hatred between these two gangs, Roma and Juliette have not spoken since a betrayal that pushed them apart 4 years prior. But in order to solve the mystery of this mysterious disease, they have to work together.
There aren't many tropes I love more than enemies having to work together. You always know the tension is going to be good. I also loved how they were once childhood lovers because it added so much more depth to their characters. It's always annoying in books when enemies randomly become lovers with not much lead. This was not the case here. Their history built their chemistry throughout the whole novel and I ate it up.
I LOVED ROMA AND JULIETTE OHMYGOSH. These two complimented each other so well and had some of the best chemistry I've ever seen in a YA fantasy novel. When they finally gave into each other oh my... worth the wait.
Side characters don't usually make or break a book for me, but I absolutely adored Marshall and Benedikt!!! They were so witty and funny and my heart actually broke for them at the end. I never really connected with Rosalind or Kathleen, but the two boys made up for it.
Now I will be spending my new years eve reading the next book in this series :) happy new years!!!...more
