On top of all that, the air force started out as part of the Army & Navy who had completely different needs & tactical objectives for the planes. Trying to create centralized control, which was needed to train the men & bring the dozens of models into line, meant fighting established bureaucracies & politics. There was no overall strategic use for planes, only dreams of what could be when the tech matured enough, so that made centralization a tougher sell than it should have been. The formation of the RFC during the war was a miracle. Evolving that into the RAF after the war went beyond miraculous, especially given the attitudes of those involved.
All in all, well narrated & interesting. The lack of background might not be a problem for those who are taught British history better than I was. As it is, I'm giving it 3.5 stars & I'm rounding it down since most of my friends live in the US.

That's clearly going to happen from the first chapter, if you know anything about the military & it should be even if you don't. The setting is one of the US failed wars (Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, leaning toward the last) that's been ported to a planet with a lot of similarities. For instance, it's a long journey away from HQ, but communications between the two are fairly quick if limited. The main base is in orbit, a few hour hop to the planet, & naval support are spaceships. It's all well done & the narrator did a fantastic job from the point of view of the main character.
One of the most popular reviews by a friend of mine only gave this 2 stars. (I HATE the new book page!!!) The reason given is that the motivations don't make sense nor does the mystery. I'm not sure how they missed either. They made perfect sense to me, especially given one of the scenes toward the end. It's not a very clean ending, but none of the wars it was modeled on were either. There are two more books in the trilogy, but they follow the main character of this book, Col. Butler. I suppose we'll never see all the bad guys rolled up with Truth & Justice prevailing, but that's just real life so I appreciated it in this novel. It was another mark of realism that raises this above the normal fare. I found it quite satisfying & am moving on to the next one....more

Of course, the course is a tough one to navigate, so Gas has to scramble to keep a step ahead. There are some leaps in the plot, but it's all in fun so didn't bother me.
It was nice reading another book with power armor, too. Future infantry in power armor is a theme that has interested me since I read Starship Troopers & The Forever War. Followed by Armor & Old Man's War in that order shows a progression of the idea. This is a good, if not great, addition.
Mammay really showed the feel of an infantry unit with the macho guy interplay & all. Excellent narration helped the story, too. Definitely recommended....more

They worked as a great team & while things didn't work out as well as they could (Awful for some.) they did manage to tie up an inordinate amount of German resources with their escapes. The big one for which the book is named was incredibly taxing for the Germans.
I'm fairly handy & I make a lot of things from scrap & scratch, so I was particularly interested in some of the passing references to the items that they made. I know nothing of forging documents, but can't imagine how they did such fine jobs for so many with so few, jury-rigged supplies. I marveled at their tailoring & tool making abilities. Simply fantastic.
Over the years I've read some stories about the Japanese & Russian POW camps. The contrast between them & the German ones is stark. While there were quite a few deaths, slim rations, & otherwise harsh conditions, there was also a great deal of restraint on the part of the Germans unlike the others. Part of that was that Germany was one of the first signatories of the Geneva Convention & there was fear of reprisal for their own people held prisoner, (The air war was teaching them that.) but there was also a lot of kinship between them & the officers of the RAF. Many spoke each other's language & had visited or even lived in their countries during peace time. Still, it was horrific & the last days were especially bleak. All this is told in a very sparse, factual manner so the horror of it was somewhat lost on my teenage self.
It's a great book & highly recommended. It was also written at the perfect time. In 1950, the memories were fresh enough & yet had some time to scar. Also, there was time to investigate & piece together the final acts. The horror of not knowing was probably worse for them & they didn't for years.
I'm not going to close this review yet. I watched "The Great Escape" (1963) movie starring Steve McQueen, James Garner, Charles Bronson, James Coburn & many other stars. It had been a while (decades?) since I last saw it. It's a lot more upbeat, but still a great movie. The article highlights some of the great casting since many of the actors had served in WWII & had experiences that made their performances better. For instance, Charles Bronson worked in mines & had claustrophobia, so he was perfect as the Tunnel King who suffered from the same.
It points out that the movie was changed to suit the US audience & many of the factual errors, but again in an understated way. For instance, the weather was always nice in the movie & wasn't in real life, but that doesn't begin to cover things like standing for 7 hours in the cold rain in underwear. McQueen made the Cooler look as if it was easy time. Not hardly. His motorcycle scene, fun as it was, was ridiculous.
It was great seeing it after reading the book It took some of the haunting edge off. I highly recommend both, but in that order....more
McMurtry did a good, quick sketch of Custer & the events that led to & followed the battle of Little Big Horn. There was more from the Indian point of view than is normal plus a good balanced account of the man himself. Highly recommended....more
I'm fairly familiar with WWII since it was a big deal when I was a kid, a truly 'good' war as compared to Vietnam which raged then. I've read & seen both fictional & nonfiction accounts of many of the major battles too, so many of the names & places are familiar to me, but I learned a lot more even though Childers basically only hits the high points. It was a big, complicated mess that he covers in something like 27 or 28 lectures that were about 30 minutes long each.
He did a great job of covering all of the points, though. He didn't just concentrate on the US involvement, although that was of prime importance, but he also covered the other participants well, especially the Germans, Soviets, & British. He compared capabilities, areas, & losses among all the participants well.
He didn't excuse any of the horrific actions taken, although he did point out the thinking at the time which I really appreciated. For instance, we had cracked the Japanese code before the attack on Pearl Harbor, but it was their diplomatic code, not their military code. The military was in charge & thus we knew something was brewing, but not what, so the conspiracy theory that FDR allowed the attack to get us into the war doesn't hold up.
For the most part, the lectures chronologically follow the war, but there were a few places where specific subjects were expanded on to follow their threads through time. That can be confusing, but he made sure it wasn't. He didn't do it too often, just enough so that important themes made more sense. Sometimes this meant a bit of repetition, but it was just a bit & necessary.
Overall, it was a very well done overview, but it's just that. There are books, even multiple volumes, devoted subjects he covered in 30 minutes or less. Still, he managed to present a comprehensive & fairly detailed accounting of both the war in the various theaters as well as the home front & the changes it created there. Highly recommended....more

This is short & written by a Scottish historian, so I found his take somewhat refreshing. He didn't seem inclined toward the US or British the way so many are. An annoyance from books on WWI was not enough information on communications & that was pretty much ignored here. They were fairly modern by this point so far flung units could keep in touch with HQ. Still, there were a lot of issues, but I guess that was beyond the scope of this book. I'll be listening to a lecture on this war shortly, so that should pick up the slack.

Lecture 1 The Greatest War: The world was a mess with outdated empires & colonialism running out of new areas to conquer plus treaties binding these together, so it was a precarious time & Ferdinand's assassination was just one of many sparks that could have set it off. "The Yanks Are Coming" explanation was better, but it was good to get both.
Lecture 2 Opening Shots: The early war in 1914 was much different than just a year later when it had settled into trench warfare. It started out with all the old bright uniforms & marching, but so many men & new tech quickly changed that. The German plans to the train time table, Schlieffen Plan, are astonishing. The tail wagged the dog?
Lecture 3 Gallipoli and the Near and Middle East: Turkey controlled access to the Black Sea (Dardanelles), so Gallipoli was important for getting material to Russia even if it was an initial loss. Lawrence of Arabia helped gut the Turkish empire.
Lecture 4 1915 in the West: Static trench warfare rules as new, abundant weapons (artillery, gas, barbed wire, flame throwers, & machine guns) pin men down & create long battles that kill millions. Planes & zeppelins used for reconnaissance. Commo limited to phone wire & pigeons. No tanks yet, so defense much stronger than offense.
Lecture 5 Home Fronts: Very important as civilian populations had to man the war machine, produce for it, & suffered from shortages because of it. Censorship & propaganda. One of the first wars where most of the population was literate enough to follow it all in the newspapers.
Ramsden says Wilson & Pershing were close, exactly the opposite of what I've read before. Perhaps it seemed that way to a Brit since both insisted the the US forces were separate from the other allied forces, but they met only once before the war & that was very brief. Both Wilson & his Secretary of War were pacifists! Wilson may have championed Pershing among the foreign leaders, but he pretty much ignored the military including in his peace efforts after the war.
Lecture 6 The Western Front in 1916: Britain finally fielding numbers of troops to rival France. "Pals" battalions whole towns of volunteers creating units, huge losses devastated those at home. Battle of Verdun (holding action) & the Somme (stalled attack). German gov't dominated now by military.
Lecture 7 The Eastern Front: Russian defeats led to 1917 revolution & Germany concentrated on them in 1914-15, doubled down by shipping Lenin in to further destabilize.
Lecture 8 A Literary and Artistic War: some of the poetry, easily created in the field, is haunting. Modernism & such discussed.
Lecture 9 1917 in the West: Grimmest year. French troops mutinied, no longer would attack. Russia surrenders completely. The Battle of Passchendaele is British push to kill sub bases & regain Belgium. Wilson & the Pope try to make peace: Wanted the allies to quit, but the idea of all that fighting for nothing didn't sit well with allies & Germany still thought they could win. Roundly rejected, of course. Only clueless pacifists could think of such a thing.
Lecture 10 The War at Sea : Britain, for all their great navy, had trouble defeating Germany on the seas. Latter back to unlimited sub warfare which was kicking ass. Finally convoys & destroyers stopped them.
Lecture 11 America Goes to War: Unlimited sub warfare (sinking of Lusitania) finally brought the US into the fight along with the Zimmerman Telegram (Germany wants Mexico to invade US & will give them NM, AZ, & all afterward). Amazing piece of work, especially his confirmation of it. Britain's credit runs out, US gov't has to underwrite it from this point on. Britain has been borrowing for France & other allies from US.
Lecture 12 Germany Almost Wins the War in 1918: Italians on the run, Russian surrender allows Germany to concentrate on Western Front. France exhausted, Britain puts more men in taking over from French, although General Haig is strangled by Lloyd George. US forces building, learning. Germans attack in March (Operation Michael) & have success for a few months in short, flexible attacks, but 800k losses exhaust them by June. Ferdinand Foch made commander-in-chief, first time all armies under one, US soldiers & tanks (able to crush through wire & wipe out trenches) now in large numbers.
Lecture 13 Victory in the West: The Germans were exhausted & were pushed back from June to November 1918. Their military turns control back over to the civilian government. Tanks, reinforcements, & supplies plus finally learning the tactics needed allowed the allies to push forward.
Lecture 14 Aftermath and Reputation: Germany never officially surrendered, just signed an armistice that amounted to unconditional surrender. This was used by the Nazis as propaganda for WWII. Ramsden never says so, but so did the heavy toll of reparations that couldn't be paid. He does mention that money was a problem for a decade until the Wall Street collapse.
He does an interesting trace of feelings about the war through the arts over then next 4 or 5 decades. He says eventually kids were learning more about the war in English class than in history.
Overall, it was a good series of lectures made more interesting by the difference in his take compared to that of US historians. I'm sure it was more accurate in some ways.
I wish he had done a lecture just tracing the role of communications. The 'wireless' was available, but not reliable & I guess in short supply. There were so many screwups due to the lack, though! He mentions how generals went from being able to see a battlefield to such huge areas that they had no clue what was going on. Their artillery, massive armies, & world spanning navies reached far further than ever before. Arial reconnaissance could have been much more helpful, too....more

The war itself is described in a fairly sketchy, sometimes confusing manner, but I've definitely read far better accounts & I'm not all that familiar with it. (I'm listening to The Modern Scholar: World War l: The Great War and the World It Made, one of The Great Courses, next.)
The last half of the book is divided into 2 parts: biographies of the U.S. leaders (mostly military) including an account of the Roosevelts & an overview of what came next. Crocker is not kind to Wilson with good reason. He was definitely the wrong man for the job with his high ideals & ignorance of practicalities.
All in all, a good, short summary. Well narrated, too. I recommend it, especially for those without much knowledge of the subject. It's a good way to get familiarized with the confusing mess....more

Yes, some of the statues can & should be moved, but they're all being treated the same & they shouldn't be. This quick sketch Confederate Kentuckians shows that well. Families were split apart over the issues with many becoming Confederates because they believed in state rights & 'the North invaded Kentucky's neutrality', even though they'd argued against secession before. Some were young, dumb, or had Southern loyalties through family & friends. It wasn't a simple choice for them.
With the advent of the Civil War, [Roger Weightman] Hanson was faced with the same dilemma that confounded many of his contemporaries. Torn between his love for the Union and his sense of obligation to the rights of the State of Kentucky, he determined to uphold the Constitution but desired to remain neutral. To George D. Prentice, editor of the Louisville Journal, Hanson publicly avowed to be a "Union man without ifs or buts." Soon, however, he did a political about-face and decided that his future and his ties lay with the Confederacy. Hanson was not alone in his decision. Two of his four brothers joined the Confederate ranks, and two others embraced the Union cause. Like Kentucky, the Hanson family was torn apart by the war.
I didn't pay much attention to what most of these soldiers did during the Civil War, but read about their early life, why they joined the Confederacy, & what they did later. Some were outright bastards, but there's a lot of diversity. Some went on to become excellent citizens. Abe Buford is best known around here as starting Bosque Bonita Farm, a Thoroughbred breeding & racing stable, even though he was also governor of the state during part of the Hatfield-McCoy Feud.
A better example is John Castleman's statue which was recently removed. Even a brief look at the history of Kentucky & Castleman shows that he was a pretty great guy who didn't choose well as a young man. He was just 19 when he joined the Confederacy, but later was a strong & early advocate for social justice in Louisville & his statue was dressed in civilian attire - it was NOT a Civil War statue. He said he'd salute any ranking officer whether they were black or white & he fought hard to keep KY parks integrated, besides helping keep KY together after Governor Goebel's assassination. He was part of the invasion of Puerto Rico & became military governor of the island. Yet all he's remembered for is being a Confederate in the Civil War. Ridiculous! He's exactly what we should all aspire to; outliving a bad decision made by our younger selves. He didn't let it define him, but moved on & accomplished good things.
Many should be remembered for their service & bravery even though I disagree with their thinking & cause. I have to admire & wonder at General Hood as he had himself tied into his saddle so he could lead his men into battle. He lost use of his left arm, but soldiered on & another wound caused him to have his right leg amputated. He still fought on! After the war, he went on to father a bunch of kids. Now that's an example for anyone pushing through adversity.
Anyway, this is a pretty quick read that shows the Civil War was made up of real people who made some tough decisions. I think some were wrong, but there are plenty of lessons to be learned. The politics of the time were just as partisan as they are today & that led to some really bad decisions.
Each bio is by a different author, so the tones vary from very dry to almost fun. It's laid out well to look up a particular person. Highly recommended! Since reading the first one, I found out why they didn't mention why the world is as it is. This takes place in 1941 & I hadn't realized just how much our science had progressed since then. Kudos to Anderson for getting so much right.
If you haven't read the first, do NOT read this one. They really need to be read in order. They're great as audiobooks, although a bit long. There's some repetition & touchy-feely stuff that gets a bit old, but still highly recommended....more

I was into Edmond Hamilton & Warren Murphy, so I was bored by it. For decades, I pretty much hated the book & author. I normally don't cuss in reviews, but I want to post a big FUCK YOU to all the English teachers out there who ruin great books by forcing kids to read them too early.
I won't rehash the plot or symbolism as you'll find it in most other reviews. Greene did a fantastic job of making the reader experience the situation. I was sorry for the dog, but he was just a casualty of war, right? Wow!
In audio, this was fantastic. The narrator really captured the voices & yet wasn't overblown in the emotions. It was very British - understated & chilling. Short, too. Highly recommended, especially if you had to read it in school....more

You can tell the author was a surgeon, so the techniques were important to him. As for the rest... they were fun anecdotes & probably had a grain of truth. This takes place in a war zone of the 1950s so there's a lot of drinking & smoking in a male dominated world.
I really liked the book, but I remember the 1970 movie https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MASH_(f... pretty well. It was great & follows the book pretty well, so a lot of it flashed back. I recommend watching the movie even over reading the book. Yeah, I'm surprised, too.
The TV series was good, but quite different. It had a real anti-war message & was more about Vietnam, the 'peace-keeping' non-war after this one. Hawkeye & Trapper weren't saints in the movie or the book. Duke & Spearchucker weren't even in the series. While Duke & Spearchucker are friends from the first (even earlier which is a great anecdote) Duke is a southern boy & refers to blacks as niggers a few times. It's not correct today, but was used accurately for back then. 'Colored' & 'nigra' are also used. If you have a problem with that, don't read the book, but you'll be missing a great story.

Legal, right, wrong, & pragmatic are all examined closely as Drummond tries to figure out what really happened when a Special Forces A team was behind enemy lines in a sort-of war. People died horribly, but who did the killing & why? There's obviously a cover-up, but who is covering up what? Can he trust anyone?
I'm not all that interested in legal thrillers, war, or Army type stories & yet this was all of those in an excellent mix that had me enthralled. Well narrated & the perfect length. I'll definitely look for more in this series & by this author....more

There were some great excerpts from diaries to lend authenticity. This high view won't tell anyone what it was like, but it would be a good guide before drilling down further.
The differences in the strategy between the RAF & the AAF were interesting & Sears points out how they used various models of aircraft to fit, what targets they went after, & how well their goals were met. Casualties were mentioned as numbers, rarely percentages, although that was easy enough to figure out. They were staggering & awful.
Well narrated & as much as I want to know about this particular subject at this time. I'm going to look for other such books by him, though....more

An Arrest was very short & seemed to make sense until the end. Again, wow. If I hadn't been prepared by the last story, I never would have suspected it.
Present at a Hanging wasn't as good as the preceding stories, but was still pretty good. It suffered just by its place in this collection. Otherwise, it was a very worthy ghost story.
Well narrated & less than a half hour for the 3 of them. Time well spent!...more
