Eu tenho plena consciência que este livro tem suas falhas na narrativa e não merecia uma tão alta. A nota ideial é 3,5, e compreendo inclusive quem não gostou tanto assim da leitura.
A historia é batida, não há surpresas no enredo e as revelações pouco surpreendem, mas eu fiquei vidrada neste livro e só larguei quando acabei.
Não quero desmerecer o trabalho de Kara Thomas, nem a competência dela, mas talvez por não ter costume de ler thrillers YA que esses livros ainda chamam minha atenção e fisgam meu interesse. Mesmo quando adivinho os desdobramentos da historia, como aconteceu aqui.
Aqui temos uma trama bem simplória, contada linearmente. Tem até bastante acontecimentos, mas são mostrados sem suspense algum. Não espere altas emoções e aventuras. A vida desses personagens é tão pacata quanto a história e o desenrolar de tudo. Mesmo que há cinco anos, a tragédia tenha atingido cinco famílias.
Não desmereço as escolhas que a autora fez para criar seu livro. Acho que funcionaram muito bem. Tudo o que acontece aqui literalmente poderia ocorrer com qualquer pessoa em qualquer lugar do mundo. Não é um thriller exagero, que pesa a mão no drama e nas viradas de eventos para prender a atenção do leitor (isso até funciona, mas no fundo a gente sabe que só em ficção para acontecer tanta coisa assim).
Quando você escreve sobre adolescentes, você precisa ter pé no chão. Eles não podem zanzar livremente por aí como se fossem soltos no mundo. Acho que muitos autores esquecem disso e preferem desenhar que os responsáveis adultos dos personagens adolescentes são relapsos a se esforçar mais.
Toda vez que Monica estava em um lugar que não fosse a escola ou sua casa, mexendo no celular ou fora das aulas, havia uma nota explicando onde estavam seus pais ou por que a direção da escola não notou a ausência de uma aluna e essas coisas. Achei bacana.
Aliás, Monica é uma boa protagonista. Não é burra nem ingênua demais. Seu comportamento era mesmo de adolescente, incluindo com dramas pequenos permeando seu dia a dia que faz qualquer adulto revirar os olhos. Gostei de uma informação sobre ela, que é spoiler e envolve um tabu. Nunca li um livro em que a personagem estivesse na mesma situação e fosse trabalhado desta forma.
E apesar de ser durona, gostei que a autora não minimizou o que aconteceu com ela, ainda que a própria não veja a situação com a gravidade que merece.

Porém não vi finalidade nos capítulos que mostram a perspectiva de Jennifer. Eles deviam preencher lacunas da historia, mas não acrescentaram nada novo. Só confirmavam as informações que sua irmã sabia ou descobriu durante a investigação. Sua única utilidade foi esclarecer o suicídio da personagem. Foi um acerto da autora porque a explicação foi sensata, mas ela poderia encontrar outro meio pra isso sem ser por capítulos sem propósito.
Eu senti pena do Ethan. Senti que ele foi um personagem injustiçado pelos outros e pela autora. Merecia mais. Não sei o que se passou pela cabeça de Kara, se ela manteve as informações sobre ele vagas e dúbias para que o leitor suspeitasse da inocência dele, desconfiasse de tudo que ele dizia. O que eu vi foi um garoto inofensivo e introvertido que sofria bullying na escola, um quadro familiar infeliz, tinha poucos amigos e gostava de se enfiar em bosques e caminhar pelo bairro. Que seus colegas de classe fossem meio babacas, eu entendi. Adolescentes, né? Mas ver o tratamento dos adultos com ele me deixou irritada.
Este livro contou com algumas críticas sociais e nem todos os personagens eram brancos e héteros. Embora fossem apenas personagens secundários e às vezes nem isso.
As críticas apareciam em momentos pertinentes. Não sei se serviram só para a autora ficar bem na fita ou foram genuínas, que ela enxerga que o mundo é diverso e desigual.
Após esta leitura, penso em dar uma chances aos livros mais aclamados da autora. Espero que minha experiência seja positiva também....more
Como foi angustiante acompanhar a indecisão de Jeanie quando as repostas para sua felicidade estavam bem diante dela. Mas, nas palavras de Emily Giffin, "sempre que houver uma escolha, haverá dúvida." Mesmo que a dúvida seja entre um idiota e ser feliz.
A bem da verdade é que para o leitor tudo estava claro como cristal e tive que controlar o ímpeto de sacolejar Jeanie por se deixar ser manipulada pela filha e pelo marido (homenzinho enjoado). Porque no fundo, eu compreendi a angústia que ela vivia: não é fácil jogar tudo pro alto e recomeçar.
No caso da filha nem tenho muito do que reclamar. Chanty realmente tinha boas intenções ao desencorajar a mãe a viver um caso (leia-se trair o amado pai) com um homem que a família mal conhecia. E não é de se estranhar que ela lute para que seus pais não se divorciem. Só que ela não sabe os pormenores do casamento deles, sequer imagina que a mãe é infeliz há algum tempo e que George pode ser um pai maravilhoso, mas deixa a desejar como marido.
Foi uma falha de Jeanie não desabafar com a filha a crise do casamento. Ela, também casada com um homem complicado que já aprontou poucas e boas com a esposa, mais do que ninguém entenderia a mãe. Chanty é lúcida e num momento do livro diz algo precioso sobre ter ciência de que não se casou com um homem santo. Ela conhece os defeitos do marido e o ama mesmo assim. E essa é a diferença entre ela e a mãe: Jeanie já não suporta mais os defeitos de George.
Já o George não passa de uma pedra no sapato. Cara mala! Mas o retrato do homem de sua geração, não podemos esquecer disso ( e por isso não gosto dele).
Achei que Ray seria coprotagonista do livro, mas ele é mais "uma luz no fim do túnel" para Jeanie. Não é crítica, é constatação.
Talvez esse livro não seja indicado para aqueles que acreditam em almas gêmeas ou amor eterno. Ou talvez seja exatamente esse choque de realidade de que essas pessoas precisam. Houve um tempo em que Jeanie e George eram ideais um para o outro e construíram uma família juntos. Mas esse tempo passou e agora o divórcio é a solução.
Não foi um livro que me deixou vidrada na história, mas é um livro bem escrito - traduzido e revisado -. Além do mais, nos últimos tempos prefiro ler sobre personagens da meia idde e seus dilemas. Talvez porque esteja cada vez mais me afastando dos jovens e já quero me preparar pelo que vem pela frente.
Afora Jeanie, não me conectei muito com ninguém. E a razão de ter me identificado com Jeanie foi ser indecisa (risos). Como escrevi antes, foi um livro que gostei e cumpriu seu papel, mas lamentavelmente eu não me apaixonei por ele e possivelmente por isso sinta essa frieza em relação aos personagens.
Mas são ótimos. Complexos, desenvolvidos. Com seus defeitos e qualidades, pareceram bem críveis.
Gostei como a escritora conseguiu inserir feminismo na história.
Entendi a relutância de Jeanie e sua necessidade de colocar a família acima de tudo. Ela veio de uma geração que isso era o mais importante e nenhum feminismo mais mudá-la da noite pro dia. Entendi e fiquei grata pela paciência do Ray. Bom, ele também tem 60 anos e compreende como a vida segue. Até o Alex eu consegui suportar conforme virava as páginas. Aliás, grata pela Hilary Boyd não ter sido tão preto no branco com ele.
A única coisa incompreensível é por que na capa do livro diz que trata-se de "50 tons de cinza" para a terceira idade. Não há BDSM, não há glamorização de abuso, George é sem dúvidas um escroto, mas sem passada de pano aqui. Mal há sexo!

Mas nunca em toda minha existência me deparei com um livro tão majestoso quanto esse. Terminei de ler no primeiro dia do ano, e chorei - literalmente - de felicidade por ter tido a oportunidade de ler o livro e de tristeza de ter acabado de lê-lo. É uma pena que seja um livro tão desconhecido porque Lydia Kang merece recolhecimento e espero que escreva mais livros mantendo a mesma qualidade. Foram 350 páginas de excelentes escolhas de palavras que fizeram um conjunto harmonioso com a história. Isso porque ainda não falei do desenvolvimento!
Metade de mim está surpresa de que uma escritora debutante tenha acertado tanto assim, parte de mim acredita que todo escritor deveria produzir livros nesse nível, não interessa se é o 1º ou o 50º. Os personagens centrais são complexos e reais. Eles têm falhas e fogem dos estereótipos de mocinhos perfeitos, mas suas imperfeições não são hipócritas ou irritantes no geral; os personagens secundários dão um bom suporte à história e a descrição da Era de Ouro, dos fatos históricos... Eu não tenho do que reclamar neste livro. Uma obra prima, um acerto da capa à ultima página. Para uma escritora inexperiente, Lydia mostrou que sabe o que está fazendo. Este livro me mostrou que dá para criar uma história magnífica sem usar os clichês de sempre....more
